  1. At first, it smells of iris and more iris, with a very Dior Homme-style earthy touch and a bitter coffee note. As it dries, it moves away from that dark iris to become soft, somewhere between powdery and creamy, with the Ambrette musk, the freshness of tea, and a hint of leather becoming more noticeable. On my skin, the iris shifts from dark purple to light lilac. I see it as unisex and ideal for cold or mild weather. The longevity is good, with moderate projection and trail throughout. In summary: I liked it a lot, but it’s not the best iris on the market; there are more unique and better options for less money.

If you’re here, it’s because you love iris and have already heard of Dior Homme, Valentino, Prada, the Gentleman line, and others like Bois d’Argent or Galloway. So why all the context? To tell you that this Iris Torréfié is wonderfully unique and expensive, but absolutely delicious. It opens with a Dior Homme Intense (2015)-style iris for just thirty seconds. Then a different Guerlain iris emerges: not powdery like Prada, not creamy like Givenchy, nor feminine like Bois d’Argent. This Guerlain iris elevates the Dior Homme sensation with the opening coffee; truly, you haven’t heard anything like it. After twenty-five minutes, the coffee fades (and that’s where I understand the criticism regarding its fleeting nature), leaving that delicious Santal Noir-style Ambrette musk, accompanied by iris and ambered tea. The journey is linear but not boring. In short: thirty minutes of iris and freshly ground coffee, twelve hours of iris, Ambrette, and ambered tea. Very versatile, only unsuitable for extreme heat, although two sprays in summer work just like Gentleman. Looking for compliments? You’ll get them here. Seeking elegance? You’ll feel it here. Want a new experience as an #IrisLover? You’ll live it here. Age: 27-28 and above. Unisex, slightly masculine at the start and totally unisex when dry. I have the 100ml bottle at 295 euros, very well invested; I even should have bought the 200ml, but I didn’t know I would fall in love with this jewel. If you can try it, do so in a boutique, experience it on the blotter, and then on your skin. Today I have about 94ml and the oxygen makes it beast mode. The initial performance is good, but with oxygen in the bottle, it’s brutal. Guerlain rectified its private line to compete with niches and big brands. Iris Torréfié, you have been the best of 2021 and will be a staple as long as your bottle has millilitres, before being reborn in the 200ml version.

  3. On my skin, it opens with roasted ground coffee. It was pleasant, though I didn’t expect to like it, as coffee fragrances never work for me. After half an hour, it transforms into a tame version of Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant: cardamom chai and vanilla. The final phase, at the one-hour mark, reveals a buttery iris that I don’t appreciate at all. For its price, I find it disappointing: the projection was very soft and it lasted about six hours, although I can see people wearing it in mild or cold climates. It seems more suited to formal or work environments. It was my last test in 2019, before the COVID era; although interesting, it wasn’t much of a wow. Pleasant: 6/10, Interesting: 7/10, Versatile: 7/10, Original: 8/10.

In the store, they describe it as lipstick with coffee, and it has something of that. It smells of cosmetic iris and almost gourmand. If you’re looking for a floral iris, this isn’t the best option because it’s very sweet. It has some recall of the old Dior Homme, but much more contained and feminine; it lacks its extroverted character, but it does have its sensuality. I would love to have it, but the presentation seems disastrous for coming in only a giant size.

  5. I really wanted to like this perfume more. Is it good? Yes, it’s excellent, but not one of the best irises on the market. It’s delicate, unisex, with a warm touch; the dominating iris feels of very high quality. Still, it didn’t fully convince me, and for the price, I think there are better alternatives on the commercial market.
