It’s the typical fragrance where anyone not deeply involved in the perfume world would say it has nothing to do with the advertising of others… and if you try it? Well, you’ll like it or not, like all of them, but this one is also particularly strange. Dior Homme presents a rare aroma; it’s not the typical citrus, sweet, aquatic or fruity scent we can imagine; it’s something you’ve never heard of. They must have thought of this in 2005; nowadays brands like Prada, Valentino, Loewe or Givenchy have based some of their star fragrances on this rare and unmistakable aromatic presence that Dior unveiled. Iris is the central note, present in all phases in a noticeable way, accompanied softly by the others, with cocoa and leather being the most perceptible. This means that although there is a clear evolution, it is so subtle that we hardly notice it; it’s like a compact and rounded scent, dusted and tenderly sweet. The opening is the hardest part; I decipher that “rare” aroma as an explosion of iris dancing with lavender until the cocoa enters and finally the leather. Dior also adds Guatemalan cardamom, along with leather and lavender, masculine notes that balance the iris, presumably feminine. It results in a strange aroma because it’s uncommon and is likely to not please many people, but as a whole it is sweet, dusted and aromatic, truly endearing and soft, as if we were in a cloud of silk, elegant and refined. Its longevity is about seven hours and the sillage is moderate with one spray on the wrist; I imagine it increases with more. I don’t think it’s exclusively formal; it can be used casually, but I would exclude it for hot days (+20°C). The first time I didn’t like it, the second time a bit more, and the third time I almost decided to buy it to use after summer; since it’s an unconventional aroma, it’s worth giving it several chances; its dry-down is exquisite. A great work by Dior, elegant and refined; I think the perfumers who create extraordinarily different aromas are admirable; this is creativity, at the feet of François Demachy and Olivier Polge, the father of it all.

  • Delicious. If I were given a choice between this and the original 2005, I wouldn’t know which one I’d stick with. I love both.

  • I bought it a while ago and I must say I love it. It’s true that it has a feminine initial phase, then the iris blends with a non-sweet cocoa and leather, which gives it masculinity. It stays at the perfect point of sweetness and softness, like velvet, thanks to the contrast between the iris, cocoa and leather. When I use it, I also put it on my hand because I like to smell it from time to time. I don’t think it’s for young people, but for those over 30. It’s for elegant or formal wear, even casual, but never sporty or for everyday use. Nor for summer. It’s not the typical scent that will appeal to all women; some identify it as feminine and would want it for themselves, others find it fascinating.

  • It’s a fragrance that opens doors, smiles and gazes. It introduces you very well and is different. At first, the dusted iris surprises and grabs attention; it’s a strong feminine point due to the association with makeup, followed immediately by a soft, masculine leather, persistent but not aggressive thanks to the cocoa, very subtle but present. There’s the contradiction and the wonder: a constant struggle between the dusted iris and the leather, between the striking feminine and the captivating masculine. I also detected amber and vetiver in the first few hours, but they fade away. The longevity is brutal on my skin: with three sprays I get over three hours of sillage, over five hours of presence and more than ten hours close to the skin. Definitely for those over 35, and except in summer, I see it as very versatile. I’ve seen the 150ml version for under £90, which, given the quality and persistence, is an excellent price-quality ratio. You have to like light iris and you have to know where you are; I can’t stop smelling myself; it doesn’t quite suit me entirely, but it’s an exceptional piece of perfumery and if I ever collect perfumes, it will be a mandatory stop.

The first time I heard of Dior Homme 2005, I thought it was for women; I couldn’t believe so many compliments were given to a men’s fragrance with that aroma. Years later, I came across the 2011 version and found a delicious, well-balanced and very distinctive scent. I fell in love. It’s the best I’ve tried. The reformulation has the perfect balance: bergamot, iris, that touch of leather and woods. The whole ensemble is a work of art. We’re ambitious and I wanted to try DH Intense, Parfum, Eau and Cologne, but none have the magic of the original. It’s a scent not for everyone, very elegant, slightly feminine due to the iris, but when mixed it smells seductive, mysterious and crisp. It’s captivating in all its stages. Since it’s not for everyone, I recommend trying it on your skin. If it catches you, you’re lost: you’ll buy it and use it compulsively.

Fragrantica says Dior is going to relaunch it reformulated in January 2020, changing at least 50% of the current formula 😩. I can’t believe it; we all know what Dior’s latest reformulations are like. For now, I’ll buy a large bottle of this Dior Homme. I don’t know what’s going on with the brand; it seems they’re set on destroying their great masterpieces, on purpose. They’ve already destroyed Addict and Miss Dior, and they’re launching something as generic as Joy. It’s incredible. Masterpieces should never be touched. It’s very sad 😢.

  • I’m talking about the 2007 version. It’s one of the best I’ve owned, with great sillage and longevity. It features leather, wood, lavender and iris, all dusted with a light touch of women’s makeup. The wood and leather give it the masculine edge that counterbalances the iris and the make-up scent. I don’t know why I associate it with money: a man in his mid-thirties with cash, hanging out in Puerto Banús with a yacht and a Bentley, with Arab features but European, surrounded by girls. A work of art. 9 out of 10.

  • It’s a pleasant scent, but it has the same flaw as Habit Rouge: it smells like a woman’s dressing table drawer. That takes away virility from aromas that are paradoxically very masculine.

  • I picked this up this morning and the first impression is brutal; it smells like high-end makeup. After a few minutes, it transforms into something incredible, rich and soft, like chocolate cookies. I loved it, I fell in love with it; it’s a delight. I sprayed it on my wrist and showed it to five women; they all said it smelled masculine but very rich, and they kept smelling it again. Short story: 100% recommended, it’s a masterpiece and a treat for my nose.

  • In 2014 I moved back in with my parents and my brother, who shares my hobby. I managed to get Dior batches from a contact, including this Homme, which he considered very formal. The first day I applied it before going to work and the scent stunned me, resulting in being very strange for me, who was enamoured with recent launches. It was the fragrance with the most impact in my life. Over time it became bearable; although at first I found it hard to wear, with successive uses I liked it more until I drank half a bottle. I have a special affection for it: it brings me family memories and changed my olfactory paradigm. I wouldn’t lie if I said it’s the one I like most, but it’s the one I enjoy most from the line. It has a lot of evolution and I love all its stages, from the sharp iris to the powdery floral leather. I always hesitated to buy it, but now that it can be discontinued, yes. I’m annoyed by the bad reviews of the new batches; my 2013 batch was excellent, lasting 10h easily with the classic trail of the line.

An exquisite perfume. It’s a niche iris with a delicious cocoa. Better than Valentino Uomo, though not as good as Dior Homme Intense.

  • I’m not a fan of cocoa, but I recognise good construction. This perfume revolves around the cocoa and its play with iris to give it a powdery and bitter chocolate touch, less gourmand. It’s perfect for autumn; if it’s not cold, it might be too much, but if you like cocoa, it’s very good. High longevity (8-9h), good projection (1-2h), high quality, not artificial and well blended. It gives more than it costs. Recommended.

  • This perfume was a milestone in my taste, discovering the note that identifies me: iris. A floral and complex aroma with talc-like touches that embrace that delicious cocoa. If you find one in a shop, don’t hesitate to buy it, you won’t regret it.

  • MarceloCornejo16

I don’t have enough experience to be detailed, but it’s magnificent. I feel bergamot at the start which lasts little, then all the magic: iris, cocoa, sweetness and finally leather. Magnificent longevity, about 8 hours. It’s my signature fragrance for winter and autumn. Next purchase: Dior Homme Intense.

  • This is my boyfriend’s perfume. I thought I knew him well until one day, at his house, his fantastic opening reached me. I could have thought he had changed, but within minutes I recognised Dior Homme. I like it very much and he does too. The last time he bought it, he came back bewildered saying it didn’t smell the same and that he had been cheated. It was true: it wasn’t the same anymore. I explained the reformulations and he was stunned. Now he’s desperately looking for shops with the old batch before it disappears.

  • Dior Homme 2011: only the memory of this jewel remains, as the reformulation has taken its toll. Now it’s very intimate, disappearing in just 3 hours close to the skin. What a pity.

  • Soft, elegant and magical; it stands out in fresh environments, floral and slightly sweet. Within minutes, it reveals a woody leather and leather combo. The iris/lavender/sage combo is an extraordinary floral accord. Add cocoa/amber/cardamom: it’s sweet, subtle and addictive. The leather/vetiver/patchouli base gives it body and masculinity. Ideal for 25+, but usable from 18 to 99. Perfect for the office, formal meetings, romantic dinners or events. Longevity 7h, projection 1h close to the skin. Fresh, iris, creamy, sweet and woody.

  • I’ve just bought it and it’s very well constructed. Forget childish vanillas or ambroxanes; this is serious, elegant and for a grown-up. The opening has a conservative lavender, fresh bergamot and sage as a connector. The heart mixes a brilliant cocoa and leather, with omnipresent iris and an amber veiled by the bergamot. The base is subtle (vetiver and patchouli) and appears after an hour. It’s mysterious, almost oriental, with depth for sophisticated noses.

  • Mr. Baskerville

I tried it today and the opening is a pleasant citrus-lavender blend, though with a feminine touch. It then evolves into something virile, elegant and velvety, but I do notice a subtle artificial aftertaste that doesn’t thrill me. It’s not bad, worth a try and a valid purchase. It evokes a man over 30, confident, elegant and neat. I admit it is a good fragrance.

  • I will not dwell on durations and sillage because every person has their own skin and more or less delicate sense of smell. What bothers me is reading comparisons with niche perfumes and claims that it is for ‘noses not accustomed to niche fragrances,’ when there are niches with synthetic scents that turn people off and are not worth the price. Let us simply experience it without comparison. On my female skin, it results in a very sensual aroma, with the iris almost dominating the show. I find it totally unisex. On my partner, I detect more vetiver, with a spicy freshness that I love. In short, if you like these notes, you will love it, as they do not feel synthetic.

  • The only thing Dior Homme and Dior Sport Homme have in common is that I dislike their opening; here, the iris is very heavy, almost like a bitter cosmetic smell. However, as the cocoa and amber notes emerge, it takes on a very good shape, with the iris slightly less intense but still very present. At times, it reminds me of the smell of brand new banknotes, but that is just my very particular appreciation. In my opinion, it is an excellent winter fragrance for formal occasions and somewhat romantic for a date, provided you apply it with measure. Very, very good longevity and projection, 10 out of 10.

  • Dior Homme is a pleasant memory of my journey from novice to connoisseur in this field; Fahrenheit happened to me the same way. When I bought it some time ago, the smell seemed very strange to me, but I grew to like it. Thanks to Dior Homme, I learned the magical combination of Florentine iris with a gourmand note of cocoa and a very discreet use of vetiver, which, rather than adding an earthy smell, gives it a powdery volume. An elegant and luminous scent, but I consider it strange on the first try. I do not recommend buying blindly.

  • An elegant and conquering fragrance that projects class. The dry-down is excellent, featuring that iris accompanied by cocoa and a leather note that lends masculinity to the scent. It is a perfume that is widely loved and looks great; truly a jewel in perfumery with good longevity on my skin.

  • wildkatzen

BEWARE: I visited several stores and found that the new Dior Homme, Eau de Parfum, Sport, etc., currently hitting the market have been reformulated and no longer carry the iris, which is central to their unique scent. Hopefully, they don’t just become plain, lifeless perfumes. Fortunately, the sales assistant warned me. After testing on skin, obviously, it bears no resemblance to what you know.

  • Another of the great classics that every man should have in his wardrobe. You can clearly detect lavender and bergamot in the opening notes, but iris, vetiver and patchouli are the heart of this fragrance. This blend creates slightly woody and powdery accords (some compare it to women’s makeup) with a very subtle touch of cocoa, all in a highly balanced way. It’s a warm and masculine perfume, yet delicate and elegant, perfect for dinner. In large crowds, it might go somewhat unnoticed, as it has a soft trail.

  • Elegance is something you’ll have in abundance with this perfume. It’s my favourite from the line, the original that started it all. Why is it my favourite? Because of its versatility. I have two 50ml bottles and one 100ml bottle, all from the first batches, which I spotted in an old perfumerie and took all three of the remaining stock. It’s perfect for a date with that special person, as it performs its magic in close proximity.

  • I don’t quite get the hype surrounding this fragrance. I read a lot about it being a great classic and I agree. To me, it feels like a perfume for an older gentleman, a man from the past who hasn’t changed his cologne in 40 years. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it strikes me as a vintage scent. It’s the kind of aroma your 65-year-old uncle wears, and you’d prefer he didn’t sit next to you at Christmas dinner.

  • I’ve managed to grab two 100ml bottles (batch 2018). It smells superb; I’ve always loved the iris note… my favourite… but honestly, I’d stick with the Intense or the Parfum. Perhaps I’ll sell one of the two I’ve acquired…

  • JohnLeMusc

Thanks to small specialised retailers and sellers, this classic fragrance is still available; I was lucky enough to pick up a 2015 batch, a clone of the original (the one Demachy received from O. Polge). An iconic scent you simply cannot miss if you enjoy this wonderful world of perfumery. It opens with a soft, intimate hint of lavender, with iris taking centre stage, accompanied by cocoa, amber and faint traces of dusty leather. Overall, a sophisticated scent in the designer segment, characterised by rigour, charm and elegance, perfectly unisex and wearing beautifully on the skin.

  • ParfuMALE

I owned this fragrance and had to get rid of it because it was very invasive and gave me a headache. Excellent performance but unbalanced to my nose. Opens with bitter cocoa and iris, but dries down to be very powdery and musky. It outperforms the Intense in projection, but I feel the latter is more balanced. Ideal for cool climates.

  • A modern classic loaded with distinction and sophistication. It is an ode to good taste, considered a masterpiece of high perfumery. It represents an elegant and classy man of high appeal, ready to seduce and leave a mark. It is a spicy floral, designed for day and night use in any season. It has magnificent projection and high longevity, remaining intact without needing reapplication.

  • I have the 2015 version, I don’t know how the current one is. Personally, I don’t like it; it’s quite different and reminds me of a vanilla and cocoa blend, with leather in the opening. On my skin it lasts 5 hours projecting well and another two hours close to the skin. It’s not for everyone. My mother could wear it and I wouldn’t even notice.

  • I also have the Sport and the Intense… I feel this one has a more present iris, reaching invasive levels at times. Lasts 10 hours on skin. Behind that iris, you can detect chocolate, leather and lavender, followed by a touch of amber and bergamot.

  • pancho_donoso

Very good perfume, smells like makeup but in a pleasant way. The iris is high quality and works wonderfully for formal occasions.

  • diego2020

I tried it and liked it, but I didn’t feel it was sweet or floral at all. Rather ANIMALIC and aromatic. I should try it again, but at first I didn’t detect the iris or any of the notes. That said, it lasts a long time, is very masculine and serious.

  • Orlandoperfumesman

Batch 2018. Luckily, I managed to get a 50ml bottle. First impression: a gentleman EDP, a more mature and elegant version of Dior Homme. EDIT: After testing both, Dior Homme is wuaaoo, magnificent, delicious, delicate and noble, but on my skin it lasts a mere whisper. In the Gentleman EDP, the iris feels less delicate, dirtier, earthier and heavier. If you’re looking for closeness for a date, Dior Homme wins, but if you want to make an impression on those around you, go for the Gentleman EDP.

  • Finally, I’ve got my hands on this masterpiece I’ve longed for. A perfectly balanced iris, suitable from formal to informal settings, nothing invasive or tiring. It’s my absolute signature; what a pity it’s so hard to find. Every time I wear it, I value it more. A true work of art.
