I tried it with a sample they sent me, and it smells just like Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium EDT, or very similar; though I’d say Opium is more potent, so definitely, if possible, go for the cheaper option. With Amouage, if you decide to buy it, you’ll be in debt for quite some time, and the presentation isn’t the best for collecting, so it’s something to think about carefully.
I tried it with a sample they sent me, and it smells identical to the YSL Opium EDT; if it weren’t identical, it would be very similar. I’d say the original Opium is more potent, so it’s definitely worth seeking out the cheaper option. As for Amouage, if you decide to acquire them, you’ll be in debt for quite some time, plus the presentation isn’t the best for collecting. It’s something you need to think about carefully.
Despite having rose in it, what really shines is the myrrh, sharing that essence with YSL’s Opium. It recalls Youth Dew and Femme de Rochas, but with fewer notes and a more modern, elegant touch than the original, lacking that aggressive spicy opening. It’s a linear perfume that dries down to a fine, refined mist—a delicious blend of its ingredients. It’s the delightful dry-down of Opium, an amber floral myrrh where the patchouli is just right, without overdoing it. It has good quality, longevity, and sillage. Amouage costs $350, whereas Opium EDT and EDP are $140, and there are sometimes offers. The best bet is to look for Amouage at discount sites like Jomashop, Maxaroma, or Fragrancenet, where you can get it for around $170 and it’s worth it. For me, buying a perfume that smells just like others isn’t a good choice.
Although it features rose, what truly shines is the myrrh—the same one found in YSL’s Opium EDT and EDP. It bears a strong resemblance to Youth Dew and Rochas’s Femme, though with fewer notes; it feels like a more modern and elegant Opium, lacking that initial spicy aggression. It’s linear, drying down to a fine musk, creating a harmonious blend of its ingredients. The dry-down is delightful: a floral-amber myrrh with just the right amount of patchouli, nothing exaggerated. It offers good quality, longevity, and sillage. Amouage retails at $350, whereas Opium EDT/EDP is around $140 and occasionally goes on sale. The best approach is to seek out Amouage at Jomashop, Maxaroma, or Fragrancenet for roughly $170, which is a fair purchase. For me, spending money on a fragrance that smells like another simply doesn’t make sense.
