I wanted to try something with oud, as I hadn’t returned to this genre since 2010 when I last wore YSL’s M7. This Christmas I tested it again and… 🤣🤣 not a single trace of what I remember from the original bottle, nor from the collection version I tried. Well, I always seem to get sidetracked, damn it. After reading about oud intensity and purity levels, I opted for Panthere Noir Absolu. The Panthere (original version) is wonderful, so I thought: why not try the oud in a flanker of a scent I know, adore, and that represents me? As I repeat, I don’t understand oud quality grades, but in Noir Absolu there is no middle ground: it either smells like burnt stable horse manure, with that charred note mentioned in niche reviews, or it’s damn good for that reason, with a faecal touch I sometimes notice. I’m in a right mess, I don’t know if I like it. The opening is a brutal wood… toasted? Smoky, resinous notes. Although it bears no resemblance to its sister, the gardenia becomes very noticeable after 2-3 hours, as the woods luckily relax. It’s very elegant and I see it even as a summer scent, for cool nights. I truly recommend it (not blindly) and I’d love for an oud expert to try it and comment, telling me at what intensity level the oud sits and whether it matches my olfactory level. I think when I use it, I’ll dare to layer it with a potent vanilla to see how it goes, as I believe it suits me very well to feel more at ease (until I get used to it). It has a frightening longevity and a noticeable sillage for the first 6 hours, then relaxes immensely although it persists a treat. Clearly, this scent is a panther, at night, starving and wary of its cubs… quite a danger, indeed.
