It’s an oud with a faecal and green touch that doesn’t detract from its warmth. At first it’s animalic, then it becomes dense, resinous and slightly asphalotic over wet wood. I tried it just for the experience; it’s not my favourite, but very interesting. It lasts 8-10 hours with a medium to strong trail.
It’s a real stunner, smells incredible, but it fades in the blink of an eye, what a pity.
I’m a fan of Ombre Nomade and Nuit, but this smells like a rip-off given the price and performance. Is it quality Oud? Yes, certainly. Is it unique? Not in the slightest. There are fragrances costing 90% less that offer the same experience: Zafar by Xerjoff, Mukhallat Shams by Ajmal, or Malesia by Xerjoff. Don’t fall for the hype.
I felt a bit foolish buying a 3ml decant, but I ended up being grateful. It’s not a bad fragrance, but it certainly isn’t among the best on the market. Many people turn this on its head, but I won’t go into details. And the price… it’s inhumane.
To me, this is the king of natural oud. I haven’t tried Spirit of Dubai’s exclusive editions, not even their ‘Oud’ or Malle’s ‘The Night’, yet this is a true ode to authentic oud. From my personal perspective, which I hope doesn’t offend anyone, I was disappointed by Pur Amber and Pur Santal from Louis Vuitton’s luxurious trilogy, but perhaps because this Pur Oud escapes the typical oriental rose accord or headache-inducing spices. Alternatively, its splendid musks cleanse the oud with superb naturalness, making it the sole protagonist. The point is that, for me, it claims the number one spot on the podium, redeeming its price. There are Ajmal perfumes with natural oud that inexplicably cost less than €80, and I doubt their production costs are lower. But this Vuitton is pure oud in abundance. The scent is very personal; I am passionate about it and find it addictive. It is polarising: my wife doesn’t like it, while others adore it. Just as Infusion d’Iris by Prada is for personal enjoyment, so is this Pur Oud, and I tend to wear it more in private than out, given its polarising nature. It is an expensive indulgence that I believe I deserve and am willing to pay for. Regarding performance, I’ve heard everything, but reality suggests moderate projection, though it is noticeable at a metre throughout its entire lifespan: over eight hours on the skin and lasting days on clothes. It is not a perfume that shouts, but it does not stop talking. Beyond personal enjoyment, I believe it is very elegant and, were it not for that polarisation, it would even suit the office; certainly, it is far less intrusive than those sugary or spiced perfumes currently in vogue. A collector’s fragrance for very experienced noses and true lovers, not of oriental perfumes in general, but specifically of oud, only oud.
