A very well-known fragrance, similar to Nenuco and the Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, with adequate performance for its price. It cannot be missing from a collection due to its history and bottle. It is citrusy, fresh, and pleasant, highly recommended if that is what you are looking for.
An extremely fresh cologne, ideal for refreshing, extreme heat, sport, or for those days when you don’t want perfume but just want to spray something, if this makes sense for anyone else.. 🤣🤣 It has that typical scent of water lily or nenuco cologne, and it doesn’t last much longer either. A bit like an after-shave, fifteen minutes and goodbye..
It is a cologne to go along with yourself. I carry a small bottle in my bag to refresh myself whenever I like, and it is a joy. It has the typical freshness of colognes (in fact, the word cologne originated with this formula) but it is also welcoming and has a rich touch of orange, jasmine, and peach that reminds one of neroli. For lovers of neroli and fresh colognes, here it is.
A classic for refreshing oneself in summer when it is very hot, after a shower, or simply to be at home in summer. Its performance and trail are minimal.
@allan27880 Thanks for your reply; I will look for those fragrances you recommended. I’m sure I can try them at Arenal, Primor, or El Corte Inglés in my city. It’s not that I dislike trying new things, but life doesn’t give me all the options and the time I have. 😅 What most frustrates me is liking something, buying a bottle, and then finding it discontinued when I go to refill it, as happened with Roger & Gallet. There is so much to choose from, yet everything passes so quickly… I think this shows I am of the old school, after all, I am no longer a child 😉 Best wishes!
I am leaving this review even though it is not exactly about this cologne, which I love, but about what brands like 4711 do. They have held on to their classics for years, and suddenly, about five years ago, it seems they had a brainstorming session and launched all options at once without focusing on any, so they could fight amongst themselves and confuse the public. Then they quickly discontinue the ‘losers’. I worked in advertising for a newspaper and I believe I retain some insight, and I say these tactics are nefarious. In fact, here one can see the lack of reviews for these simultaneous launches, and the system does not work or build loyalty. In my opinion, they should bet on a single good fragrance, give it all possible support, and allow time for the public to get to know it, rather than pushing it the following year if they don’t meet short-term figures. Furthermore, they would launch quality bath and body care lines at good prices, visible in major perfumeries, nothing only online because what cannot be seen and tried physically seems not to exist. I just saw the expansion of 4711 in Maurer & Wirtz and was overwhelmed, and although I have seen their shower gel and deodorant on occasion, I miss their body milk (perhaps it exists, but I never saw it) that would give more trail and longevity, or an intense extract or eau de cologne to complete the line. On the contrary, none of the recent remixes has motivated me to try them, and I have the feeling that if someone were to tentatively review one tomorrow, it would already be too late to go and find it.
My favourite cologne. As they say, it doesn’t last long and the trail is minimal, but the scent is a delight. For the price, I don’t mind applying it three times a day. Ideal for shopping or for quiet walks around the house. It doesn’t seek to impress or seduce; it is light, fresh, and for enjoying in solitude.
A fragrance that stands above all else. A timeless classic, a scent from our ancestors. It brings me memories of my grandmother, who kept it in her purse to refresh herself on summer days instead of splashing water on her face.
@Erik Obiol What luck to have memories that don’t fade, even when life rushes by. I agree 100% that we must live in the moment. A big hug!
@Ícara As the saying goes, life passes quickly, so we must enjoy it to the fullest. The perfume is the same: beauty is fleeting, and if one runs out, you seek another that makes you happy. It is all about that transience, about living like a breath.
A classic. When I read that they describe a perfume as old-fashioned I wonder what they will think of this aroma that is more than 230 years old, will it smell like a museum? Well, if it is from a museum, it was created in the midst of the fervour of the French Revolution, when there were many changes of all kinds, regarding fashion, men stopped using makeup, lace, high heels; women’s clothing became temporarily simpler, an aroma like this was ideal for those changes. I can already imagine the dandies with their immaculate linen handkerchiefs scented with this aroma or the ladies with a bottle in their dressing table; that is the effect of a work of art, it becomes timeless. Now you can get small bottles that look like mini canteens to carry in your bag or backpack, I bought one recently, to be able to reapply given that its longevity is a maiden’s sigh or what it takes to send an email, that is, a few brief minutes. Fresh, unisex, ageless, accessible, the great-grandfather of CK One, created 202 years later.
The bottle is beautiful and attractive, its history and the celebrities who have used it such as Napoleon, Catherine the Great, or that it appeared in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But its scent smells old-fashioned. I don’t like it at all, I detest it. Much better to use Álvaro Gómez. It reminds me of a grandmother from the 70s.
I haven’t told you that I compared it with Neroli Portofino. The truth is they are 90% identical. Neroli Portofino has a bit more orange and is slightly less citrusy due to the musk, but the rest is the same. At first sniff I thought ‘this is 4711’.
Glorious and iconic cologne. A composition revolving around petit grain, well surrounded by neroli and citrus. Clean, fresh, soapy and a delicious composition. Longevity and sillage are very scarce but we are talking about a refreshing eau de cologne available at very low prices. Personally I love it and I always have a bottle available after getting out of the shower.
I think there is not much to say about a cologne that is 230 years old, is there? The cologne that Napoleon I shared with his beloved Josephine. It is not a fragrance to dazzle. It is simply an eau de cologne for after a bath. And it is delicious.
The person who rates this as having a heavy trail must have a dog’s nose. A rich cologne for after a shower, lasting only ten minutes. I leave it on my bedside table and reapply it constantly because the scent is rich but the longevity is non-existent. PS: I am going to recommend a very rich and much more potent bath cologne, it is called Gotas Frescas Concentrated Cologne by Instituto Español.
Lately I have been going through an obsession with the neroli note, triggered by several decants of Neroli Nostrum by Lunio. This phase led me to buy a whole bunch of fragrances where that note is the protagonist and I am loving them all. Being in Germany now, I couldn’t help but add another bottle of this cologne to my collection, as I already owned one in the past. For me, it is delicious, super refreshing, a classic cologne elevated to the nth power, a citrus and aromatic explosion that I enjoy immensely. However, its projection is soft and it doesn’t last more than an hour on my skin. Although reapplying is extremely pleasant and I think it will be a very refreshing gesture for summer, I don’t think I will repurchase it when I finish it because I have found other options with better performance. Or perhaps I will… Perhaps this classic should always remain in any collection… In any case, if you have the opportunity to travel to Cologne, do not hesitate to visit the brand’s shops and get this olfactory souvenir, that is how it entered my collection for the first time. Scent 8/10 Longevity 1/10 Sillage 5/10 Value for money 6/10 Versatility 5/10 Packaging 7.5/10 Would I buy again? Perhaps.
4711 Original Eau de Cologne: a marvel, my all-time favourite cologne. I always use it straight after a shower: refreshing, clean, pure. It envelops you in its scent for a short time, but you enjoy it intensely in that moment. I don’t know if you can imagine how relaxing it is to apply it when you are about to rest and sleep after a bath. It is a daily companion that gives me peace and tranquility. It will remain an icon of perfumery for centuries. Best regards.
One of the first colognes in history and it still sounds incredible. I love that citrus note that gradually becomes classic. It smells good anywhere. Ideal to use and keep always.
LADIES WHO DO TOURISM IN BOOTS: What is the best of travelling? Art, architecture, gastronomy… but also consumerism. Wherever I go, I am searching. In Paris, in Oporto, in London… and from my favourite city, London, I always end up in one more seen than a comic book: Boots! 🫣😂 Don’t tell me why, nor do I know. I am still intrigued by the free sale of Tylenol in doses for pygmies. The point is that in this shop I managed to get this classic cologne for a few pounds in aerosol format (opaque metal cylinder, like deodorant but smaller for the handbag). It had a nozzle that made the freshness penetrate by osmosis into every pore. A real infusion of energy to enjoy right and left as a body spray, although brief. I have not found it again; no matter how much I search, that format is a rare bird. If anyone spots it, let me know! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Pure freshness in a bottle.
A bottle of this ‘Colony Water par excellence’ arrived and surprised me. But if it is the Hay of Pravia of old, in Spain ‘the scent of my home’ always, much cheaper. Synthetic citrus somewhat potent and bulk lavender. I expected much more after the comments.
What can I say that hasn’t been said? I am fascinated that an aroma of over 200 years remains current and ‘available’. I feel this type of fragrance is starting a mini boom. I am not surprised; we are saturated with sugary, syrupy fruits, portentous flowers, clean and dirty ouds, at inexcusable prices. It may be a Pavlovian reflection, but it transmits a feeling of freshly washed. For the handbag in the heat, for travelling, for long days and reapplying for energy. For all genders and ages. They already put it on me as a child, back in the 12th century. There is no better way to start a Sunday: freshly showered, house in silence, mega-dose of 4711, coffee or tea without rushing while looking at the sky. The croissant is optional, company negotiable.
While many perfumes imitate others, 4711 and Jean Marie Farina by Roger & Gallet are copies of the 1709 COLOGNE WATER. Today both are owned by large conglomerates which sadly lowered the quality of ingredients, so the trail is very low.
One of the most versatile perfumes in history. Lemon and rosemary predominate. A few sprays are enough. I used it in summer and my teenage son after school. Neither niche nor surprising, yet temporal and definitely recommended. It is a staple.
I share this find; it is a classic. My neighbours discarded it halfway through the year, but I saw it sealed in a box with cellophane and a seal, so I took it. I took my time to open and try it; it was like uncapping peace and tranquillity. It smells like afternoons on holiday at my grandmother’s house (I think she alternated her sophisticated perfumes with this cologne). This summer I will alternate it with Light Blue, Mango Rosa, Coco, Pie White and CK One. What do you use with this heat? Does it evoke anything for you?
It is a jewel of perfumery. A bomb, a 4×4 that never goes out of fashion. A unisex aroma for everyone. It lasts more than 8 hours and fills the room. Fresh, citrusy and floral, like a fresh morning or afternoon in a garden with jasmine or neroli. Recommended 1,000 times.
It reminds me of Nenuco, my childhood, and that table where my mum changed my nappies, now in a dusty attic but which once smelled citrusy, fresh and floral. The whole room smells like this; that is ‘smelling of baby’ after the bath. Simple but addictive, unisex, classic, adorable, historical, refreshing, explosive and childish. The bottle with the gold/green sticker and red cap is an icon, just like Chanel’s. It has air with Briseis’ Ragazza, ideal for home, intimacy or bed. No derivative equals the original. This Wilhelm Muelhens was a genius; what a gift he left humanity! 9/10.
Buying 4711 Original is holding on to the history of perfumery. After reading incredible reviews, I couldn’t wait any longer. It is one of the first colognes revisited over time, like Nenuco here or Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino. It is a miracle they still make it and it holds so much weight in vanity cases. It is not my personal favourite, but I enjoy it in any season to refresh myself. A balanced citrus equilibrium, nothing strident; it smells like orange blossom water for desserts with a citrus charge. On my skin it lasts very little and needs reapplying. Its timelessness amazes me; it seems like divine alchemy. Long life to this magnificent cologne!
A citrusy and sweet opening from the orange, a green middle with lavender and rosemary, and an aromatic finish with neroli. Short projection of 1-2 hours and a duration of around three hours. Fresh and timeless, this defines the classic German scent. It reminds me of Nenuco but evolved, more floral and green. Versatile for any occasion, though it shines in the heat. Affordable and fulfils its purpose without disappointing.
It’s a simple and perfect fragrance; I love it, and if there were a pool with this scent, I’d dive in without a second thought. Nothing more to say.
Good afternoon, everyone. Whoever enters the comment wall of this beautiful, celebrated, and absolutely classic fragrance to criticise it, complain about its performance, or say it simply smells old, with all due respect, knows nothing about perfume history. A classic cologne, which, in my opinion, we cannot afford not to own at least once in our lives. Whoever smells this marvel is breathing history. Nothing more to add. Warm regards.
4711 is one of the most valued essences in perfume history. It’s very old, and its chemistry is quite a mystery. Fresh yet fleeting, and truly perfect for summer. It brings very good vibes. It was my German grandmother’s favourite, and before she passed away, she gifted me a huge bottle that I still keep. You have to apply it several times a day, preferably after a shower. It offers good vibrations and a clean finish thanks to the neroli, bergamot, and its well-balanced citrus touches. It’s unisex but sits perfectly on men. You can use it to lift your spirits. It is and will be an eternal cologne.
Its perfection lies in simplicity: before bed, upon waking, after a shower, or at any moment you wish, it makes your stress disappear. Just unscrew it, apply it, and enjoy.
This fragrance allowed me to discover and fall in love with the neroli note, which I still seek today. I bought its 100ml bottle for a laughable price of 40 dollars; many might think it’s expensive, but with the local currency devaluation and the fact that any other trendy fragrance usually triples that amount, it’s a bargain. I use it as an aftershave lotion. I also carry a 3.5ml bottle with its atomiser when I go out.
Recently, I bought a 4711 Remix blindly after seeing a review. Before leaving the perfumerie, I asked to try the original, and what a pleasant surprise… it was exquisite. It instantly transported me back to my childhood in Adrogué, to the orange blossoms flooding the gardens in spring. When I got home and opened the other bottle, I realised I didn’t like it at all, so I went back for the original. If I have to say something, the longevity isn’t great, but in my case, and I believe in many others’, I use it after a bath for personal enjoyment. I also apply it before going to sleep. There can’t be a bottle of 4711 missing from my collection. A true marvel.
I don’t understand why people equate it with Neroli Portofino. Neroli Portofino is 6 euros per ml, whereas 4711 costs between 15 and 25 cents. What should outrage us is that Tom Ford charges so much for a perfume that’s 90% inspired by and copied from this classic. The only differences are longevity (though if you reapply with a small bottle, it’s fine) and a slightly darker base, which is why they charge 35 to 50 times more. A cologne from 1792!!! To say it’s not a 100% dupe for TF NP is a joke, especially knowing who copied whom.
Review of 4711 – Eternity in a fragrance. 4711 isn’t just a perfume; it’s a living testament to history, the first classic that has stood the test of time with the dignity of a poem passed down through generations. A German marvel with Italian roots, it encapsulates the perfect alchemy of life, sun, rain, sea, and countryside in an accord that seems to hold the world. I remember Imperia, that little town in Liguria, where one morning in May I found myself alone in a house facing the sea. The air was thick with lemon trees and wet neroli mingling with the breeze. It was as if nature had composed its own symphony: water falling, the sea murmuring, and that citrus scent rising with the wind. 4711 is that: a suspended moment, a dialogue between memory and eternity. It’s the scent of refined nostalgia, wealth without ostentation, and the quiet philosophy of simplicity. Every note reminds us that beauty lies in the intimate: solitude by the sea, rain on lemons, an open horizon. A fragrance that doesn’t just perfume but thinks, remembers, and dreams. 4711 is life itself distilled into drops of eternity.
Like all colognes, it doesn’t last long, but that’s the point: use it straight after a shower. Jeanne en Provence’s Neroli Intense smells very similar and is cheaper, plus it lasts longer as an eau de toilette. For me, 4711 has historical value and nothing more. It smells good, but I prefer a post-shower pharmacy cologne that’s much cheaper; they’re even available in 900ml bottles.
A timeless cologne.
