Fantastic work by Mugler with this flanker. Pure Tonka is a mix of coffee (last hour but the most present) with plenty of vanilla. If you are from Mexico, it has a tremendous resemblance to the Cafés at Oxxo, very rich and sexy depending on the outfit (clearly formal). It reaches its best moment on cold days and is a compliment machine for everyone who approaches you.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to test this excellent Thierry Mugler fragrance with greater care to make a more congruent review of what it offers on skin, under concepts free of bias. Pure Tonka has a magnificent aroma, very warm, well linear, where its outstanding notes are maintained from start to finish. It reminds me strongly of a traditional sweet from my region: arequipe de café (dulce de leche/manjar/cajeta with coffee). That gourmand effect may be due to the coffee, vanilla, licorice and a warm tonka bean, accompanied by bitter cocoa that attenuates the sweetness and beautifies the composition. The lavender is almost imperceptible. When dried, it brings to mind Rochas Man, lighter and less complex, with faint coffee and vanilla chords, more contrasted by fresh notes. In performance, it has intermediate projection and very good fixation. Unfortunately I know no more perfumes from the A*Men line, as inexplicably many flankers do not reach Colombia, but I believe this is, without a doubt, the best I have tried. Scent 9/10, Longevity 9.5/10, Projection 8/10, Versatility 8/10.
$75 online, in Argentina with that I buy bottled water; I start with the price, very reasonable. Popcorn with caramel or pochoclo as we say here, in the opening. Tonka bean and vanilla predominate in the first two facets, some mint, cocoa and eventually lavender in the sillage. Moderate projection, quite long-lasting. When dried close to the skin I do feel some coffee. In my opinion it is well balanced, not as explosive as the original A Men or Pure Cuir (the first with a bold opening and the second with a boozy leather note, and now thanks to the reformulations they are a shadow). Pure Tonka is the first time I am using it; I don’t know how the previous versions would be. I tested it at 30 degrees and preferred not to evaluate it; today at 20 it is fine. Pleasant and particular, I recommend it. Only for cold days; with high temperature it says nothing. Price 7. Projection 6. Longevity 8. Best regards from Argentina.
A Men. Pure Tonka says: let’s go have an expensive breakfast at Starbucks. It is a more refined and serious version of Rochas Man. A beautiful aroma of tonka beans and coffee on a warm base that evokes comfort. The tonka is not too strong or dominant. Sweet, rich, aromatic, warm, irresistible, comfortable, delicious and unisex. Pure Tonka develops over time, becoming more toasted and oriental, less sweet; although it is rich and intense in the style of TM-A*Men, it manages never to be too sweet or intrusive. Over time I notice hints of cocoa and burnt vanilla. The base adds a soft patchouli that counterbalances the heaviness. I get truly excellent projection and gigantic longevity of 9 hours on my skin and even more. This delicious sensual scent is suitable for any time of day or night in cold seasons, especially for going out at night in the city. In my opinion, romantic dates can be worn by a woman.
Now with some time using this fragrance and with winter upon us, I can give a more coherent review. As with everything, it has good things and not so good things. I start by saying it smells almost the same from start to finish; sometimes the coffee powder is more noticeable, other times the cocoa. The rest is all good. An incredible scent: the first second is a coffee and chocolate frappe until the house signature appears, the patchouli and wood that give it seriousness, along with the soft licorice in the base and, of course, the tonka from start to finish. If you like gourmands, it is a safe purchase; here you will not find noisy notes like in A*Men, only woody sweetness, chocolate, coffee with soft vanillas. I don’t detect the mint at all. In longevity and projection, it is the second strongest I have, after Dolce Vita by DUA: it projects like a thousand hells, lasts until the next day and on clothes for weeks, with just 4 or 5 sprays. Scent 9/10, Projection 9.5/10, Longevity 9.5/10, Price 7/10.
Pure smoky tender coconut is what I perceive. In air conditioning, it is a sweetness and you will definitely love it.
I read all the reviews in Spanish and English and had to order blindly to get this wonder. It was a gift for my boyfriend, but I’ve already tried it. As a loyal Fragrantica user, I couldn’t resist. The bottle is uncomfortable (10/10): it is wide (I have small hands, mea culpa) and the hidden atomiser doesn’t invite many sprays. Furthermore, it has super-dirty black plastic that looks like the FBI could extract your DNA from it, giving it a cheap plastic look that ruins the first impression. But the important thing is inside. The opening is a bit heavy; I expected a mentholated freshness but the lavender screamed, so I went straight to the heart. After calming the lavender, it left a fresh scent, like a walk through a Mediterranean countryside (perhaps the mint added air). But the magic began at 3-4 hours: the tonka sounded, accompanied by coffee, cocoa and vanilla. The perfect symphony. It was so rich, oven-baked, breakfast-like, chocolate cake. Like arriving home cold with a hot chocolate and a freshly baked cake. It conveys well-being, warmth, home. I can’t wait to wear it as a base for a movie afternoon on the sofa. Everything was balanced to be sweet and appetising without being heavy. I was captivated by this phase because I love gourmands but can’t stand when they are dense. In summary: the opening is very masculine due to the lavender, but then it transforms into a perfect unisex gourmand. I am considering layering it to neutralise the first hours and make it more feminine. The quality is very good. It lasted seven hours with moderate sillage, ideal for this type. It attracts the attention of those around you, not the whole train. It was hard to find, only online; I don’t know if it is discontinued. The price was around £50 for 100ml, excellent value for money. All that is missing is to try it cold to evoke snacks and smiles. Summary: 5 stars.
Simply love it. Smells of coffee with chocolate and vanilla, accented with lavender and mint. Good longevity with moderate sillage. The bottle I have is the rubber one; I believe it now comes in plastic (November 2015), so if this came out in 2016, mine is one of the first. I agree with everyone: the atomiser is very poor, sometimes it sprays in spurts, but it doesn’t bother me much. It pairs brilliantly with AXE Dark Temptation deodorant. What I dislike about gourmands is that after a while, when close to the skin, it gives the sensation of having worked eight hours in a bakery. I prefer it at the beginning with the lavender and mint mix, but eventually that disappears and only the sweetness remains.
The first time I wore it caught me off guard. I didn’t detect the mint, but rather a strong, aggressive tobacco scent (which it doesn’t have) as if someone had just smoked. Hours later, it shifted to that sweet, soft tonka bean and vanilla base. It is the most long-lasting perfume of my life: I first wore it one Saturday afternoon, didn’t work on Sunday and didn’t shower, and by Monday morning it was still on my skin (even slightly noticeable at night after showering and heading to work). One detail: my work colleagues loved it.
Pure luxury. The opening, heart and that apothegmatic dry-down are incredible; the longevity and sillage are immense, lingering on clothes and in the wardrobe for up to a week. How many fragrances for men are made as well as this?
Pure Tonka smells like this: opening, cocoa liqueur with vanilla; after two hours, a cocada; a mix of dulce de leche and coconut cookies. Finally, powdery cocoa that evokes old books. I would have liked more pink pepper and caramel in the base. Good, but it’s a matter of taste.
Similar to Givenchy’s Play Intense (available on Mercado Libre). You can get Pure Tonka on the Zonaperfumes Facebook page.
I’m searching everywhere for where to buy it. Does anyone from Chile have details? Excellent reviews, any other similar ones?
I’ve had it since yesterday, a spray, and the projection is incredible, perhaps surpassing the classic; longevity is very prolonged (still feels like it’s there after 7 hours). For Argentinians: smells like the original with notes of candies, licorice, and coffee at the start, then coffee with vanilla, and finally chocolate. Regarding the packaging which looks used: it cleans with a cloth and becomes shiny.
Pure Tonka: the best of gourmand, surpassing Uomo Ferragamo and Intense in intensity, projection, and trail. If you overapply, you get dizzy; it’s potent. I put it on my shirt and it still smelled of it a week later. Women love it; it’s a conquest scent. I give it 9 for scent, 11 for everything else. It breaks barriers, draws attention, people either love or hate you, but women will adore you. The best; I take off my hat.
I like it. Coffee with lavender, vanilla, and tonka in the base, earthy and woody patchouli. Middle phase of caramel and cocoa. Gourmand for coffee and vanilla lovers, good performance, masculine. With Pure Malt it falls short of Pure Havane. For autumn, winter, and night. Long-lasting longevity, heavy trail.
Smells literally like a coconut candy stick. Delicious with an enormous fixative and long-lasting on skin.
Sweet to the point of madness. Only for winter or cold days; in summer it’s overwhelming. Smells like cake with caramel. Longevity and projection are beast mode; it lasts weeks on clothes.
1. Better coffee than Pure Coffee: this one is sweet, like Starbucks. 2. Brutal fixation: lasts 15 hours on skin and a week on clothes without effort. 3. Heavy but rich trail. 4. Everyone should own it.
Every version of A*Men is a Bach fugue: the theme is tonka bean and the counterpoint is the original DNA. After the intro, I was completely won over. It’s addictive, a smoky sweetness with licorice notes that give it anise undertones, unusual for men. It’s peculiar, even more so than the legendary Havane, which I do like. Ideal for winter and night. Projects a lot; the other versions last well but project less.
I’ve been able to liken this gourmand fragrance to a coffee latte or a mocha… in short, the review is on my YouTube channel, MOY OLAF. Enjoy my point of view. A hug.
This fragrance is well above expectations, very sweet but not overwhelming. I get a smell similar to a bakery in the city centre, where upon entering you’re hit hard by the scent of vanilla, cappuccino and shredded dulce de leche. Good for autumn/winter, but if you use it moderately, I think it wouldn’t go amiss on a summer night.
When I first spray it, it smells very similar to Guerlain’s L’Homme Idéal, with cherry alcohol notes and the powdery dry-down of tonka bean, but Guerlain’s is linear. Thierry Mugler isn’t from this planet; his fragrances evolve magically with your pH and the weather. In the cold, it lasts 2 or 3 hours, then it becomes sweet, creamy, caramelised like dulce de leche, with a bitter touch on a strong base of delicious liquorice, which resembles ripe cherry. Then the tonka bean comes out, lasting another 4 hours, with very good and strong projection. On hot days, the tonka bean comes out from the start, the liquorice lasts a short while on skin and the fragrance opens on a base of burnt and creamy caramel, slightly vanilla with the tonka around. It’s magnificent, I fell in love. It lasts on skin until the next day.
You don’t go unnoticed, great and special scent.
An unprecedented genius, this flanker of A*Men has me hooked. Never has a gourmand been so gourmand. From the opening, it’s pompous, nothing fresh, zero lavender or mint, it’s a sweet almost edible accord; it smells to me of coconut condensed milk with caramel (I assume liquorice) over patchouli. A coffee-type fragrance, but neither the tester nor the official website lists this accord; instead, there’s a note of creamy cappuccino with vanilla, which reminded me of the reformulated Angel, quite unisex or feminine. Pure Tonka isn’t the mecca of originality; it’s Oriental-Amber and offers a caramelised praline, dense and full-bodied. We should appreciate a fragrance this gourmand. The good thing about the A*Men line is that almost all have Jacques Cavallier’s nose, so they share DNA but are different. This succulent Pure Tonka and its brother A*Men share the opening and dry-down; the big change is in the heart: this Tonka is more accessible, with a sensation of creamy, pastry-like caramel, not burnt sugar like the 96 star. Totally recommended if you like sweets; I’m careful not to take a bite out of the bottle and end up drinking the liquid.
Why have they discontinued this marvel?
Interesting, trying it now. It’s sweet, which I usually don’t like due to cloying and poor versatility in warm weather. That said, it seems the most durable and with the best projection of all the Muglers I’ve tried, which generally have poor intensity. I don’t like applying it 10 times to make an impression; here, five sprays are respectable. The tonka bean is there, but less than expected, mixed with vanilla and something like smoked coconut, chocolate. The smoky touch is the most exceptional, frankly special and elegant. For the price, it’s a good option for half the year; for autumn-winter, it’s ideal. It depends on what you’re looking for. Initially, I was seeking a personal scent, my signature, but increasingly I find it’s like dressing: you can wear different fragrances according to the occasion, even keeping common notes. It’s a strange path, a perfumery hobby in the midst of many worlds and reflections.
You’ve always been my type, and I never told you. Your elegance and that smile that captivated everyone made you a ray of sunshine. Even though you were with someone else, seeing you as a friend was a balm for my wounds after a relationship that left scars. Walking with you felt like floating on a cloud. A*Men Pure Tonka is what I was looking for; it arrived late, but thanks to my favourite sales assistant, a bottle (the last one) appeared. Without thinking, I bought it. Eight sprays are stunning and attract attention, with ideal potency to stand out. It’s not far from the original, but it follows its own path without burnt notes; tonka bean is the focus with a touch of coffee and liquorice. The result is pleasant, hypnotic and almost erotic. Ideal for these temperatures. It’s magical, like seeing you again after 10 years. I see you, you hug me and time stands still. You grow but don’t change, you’re more of a woman and more beautiful. We talk about everything and you tell me I smell spectacular (Mugler is to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo what Mozart is to Chopin). I hope to see you again to tell you what I never told you, accompanied by this wonderful scent that (coincidentally?) allowed me to find you again. There’s a legend that if you can’t sleep, it’s because you’re in someone else’s dream. I’d like to be in yours, embraced and wrapped in Pure Tonka.
First and foremost, I want to emphasise something central: skin pH. The more I delve into this world, the more I realise fragrances smell and last differently on everyone. That said, Pure Tonka is the most potent and dark fragrance from Thierry Mugler. At some point, it reminds me of Pure Havane. In my opinion, it’s the best from this house, by far.
Absolutely love it! On my skin, it’s almost edible – licorish, I’d say it’s liquorice. It’s like dark chocolate filled with liquor, or that cinnamon and sugar taste from rolls. Totally delicious. The only drawback is longevity; I have to reapply after a few hours. I consider it totally unisex. Definitely going to buy another bottle.
This perfume exceeds 12 hours of longevity. It is curious what happens to me with Mugler and its flankers: they are not the ones that match my tastes the most, but I recognise certain quality and charm. This shares facets with Feve Deliciuese and above all with New Haarlem, which I consider better, although of course, it is also much more expensive hehe. It is a soft coffee, like a cappuccino, with vanilla, a touch of cocoa and the tonka on top, all very mixed with few edges. The patchouli is there giving that Mugler DNA, and the rest of the notes are intuited but always at a lower volume. Personally it is a scent to wear once in a while. Despite not seeing it as linear as it seems at first, smelling coffee every day for more than 12 hours does not quite seem right to me hehe.
Undoubtedly it is a great gourmand; its liquorish touch of coffee and vanilla creates an addiction to use in cosmopolitan cities, regardless of the cold or heat if you seek to delight yourself with its charm. I recommend it a lot; they have asked me a couple of times what perfume I am wearing when I wear it. The bad thing on my skin is that it lasts less than I would wish, perhaps a maximum of 2 hours, but it is a matter of pH, as the aroma is very recommended. Does anyone know where to buy it in Mexico because I can no longer find it?
A*MEN PURE TONKA by Mugler is a true gourmand bomb: you either take it or leave it, but you cannot be indifferent. Of the male Muglers I know, this is my favourite, although I know what it represents. The original A*MEN is an ode to ethyl-maltol, too much for me, even being a vocational diabetic. Its sugar level exceeds my tolerance and the capacity of my Langerhans islets to secrete insulin. This Pure Tonka is very sweet, but it lost that burnt tone to enter the realm of cocoa, coffee and over-baked tonka bean, which I must admit I like a lot, I don’t know if as much to smell it as to eat it. It is extraordinarily gourmand, the most gourmand of Mugler, with a pastry sensuality that immerses the greedy olfactory system in a bottomless sea of lustful pleasures, greasy and buttery. The blend of cocoa, coffee and tonka bean is powerful, unbeatable and barely nuanced by a dense, chewable, dark and thick patchouli. Everything in Pure Tonka is thick: its trail, longevity, aroma, perception, taste and texture. There are few perfumes that one must know how to dose and control when to use. On a hot summer day, it can be a weapon of mass destruction. In a closed and poorly ventilated room, it can result in lethal. In a very close approach, it can surpass the sensual to become psychedelic. Its accord is linear and perpetual. It is not for measured gentlemen nor discreet ladies; it is for those who do not mind what people say and adore not going unnoticed. Pure Tonka by Mugler is a high, a buzz, an adrenaline rush and a petite morte with unpredictable consequences.
This is my best winter perfume: it projects for 7 hours and lasts 10. It is sweet with a coffee that harmonises with the vanilla. If it is very cold and you put on a scarf, it performs better; as the temperature of the neck rises, it potentiates the aroma and makes it more vanilla and moderate. Do you remember? It cost 100 dollars, but I had the fortune to buy it for 50 at an outlet. I bought it blind; one must risk to win, I like betting.
Little is said about this aroma lately, but today I used it again and it is incredible. It is potent, so I do not use it often, but with a single spray it performs a lot. It smells like coffee, vanilla, a touch of coconut and some chocolate; it is a sweet bomb with a toasted effect. Imagine a cake with excess sugar and not burnt, very pleasant. It works perfectly as a niche: it is not of mass taste, has great performance and quality in its ingredients. I recommend it to lovers of the sweet; it is unisex, welcoming and ideal for cold days or rain. Indoors, use a maximum of two sprays. It can be liked by any age. Greetings!
Exquisite gourmand fragrance, a combo loaded with coffee, vanilla and tonka; to me it smells like roasted coffee or latte. Very good with powerful longevity. With P. Tonka we have excellent projection and a giant longevity of 9 hours on my skin, even more. This sensual aroma is ideal for any moment, especially in cold seasons.
Luckily I only ordered a 5ml decant… I searched for coffee perfumes and saw info about this one, also Halloween Man X (not yet tried). Upon trying it, it smells like very strong incense and, although it passes the time, the scent fades without changing into something else; I tried to find the coffee and did not detect it. Perhaps they sent me something else, so since it is a decant, do not take my opinion into account and try it yourself. My cousin smelled it upon arrival and said it was awful; my sister shouted ‘god, it’s horrible, what did you put on?’ (I was laughing because I had notifications activated). Now it is on the shelf without any desire to touch it. Also searching for coffee, I ordered Ferragamo Tiramisu, but they did not have decants, so I took the Uomo Signature (the black one), but I will count that in its profile.
It arrived today, I got it cheap on a forum. I am missing the Pure Coffee and the Pure Wood, but this is the queen. It smells like Havane and Malt with a sweet tonka fixation that is not cloying. Smelling it is seeing the shit that exists today in designer perfumery; it is not rare that it does not settle, it was niche in the 90s. It reminds me of Sauvage Elixir at the start: brutal lavender, sour with licorice, bursts of Havane and coffee/pachouli from the original Amén. In dry down, hidden suede with a liquor-type whisky like Malt. Pure genius. If you find it, do not hesitate.
What a well-made aroma. Lots of personality and a distinctive character that attracts me. It is a blend of spices, lots of coffee, sweet but not gourmand. The opening is totally dark and potent, overwhelming before unfolding a wide range of accords that stimulate the senses. It is very well balanced, performs brilliantly, and has a contained price. The dry down, which lasts for hours, adds a tasty and dark vanilla. Brilliant. For cold seasons and formal or semi-formal occasions; it is entirely nocturnal. This is something Batman could wear. I don’t know if I would have it in my collection, as it is not versatile, but for everything else, a great fragrance. Edit: I do feel a strong underlying mint in the initial phase.
This is a perfume with all the letters. I absolutely love the kilometre-long trails. The first time I tried it on blotting paper, I kept it in my jacket; the scent permeated it for days, although I later thought it was too invasive. Be warned, never judge a perfume solely by blotting paper. A year later, I smelled it again and had to buy it: it smells like a caramel macchiato, the only way to describe that rich, sweet aroma. It is a gourmand as it should be. On skin, it lasts more than 24 hours and the trail is kilometre-long; if there is a breeze, people will smell you from the other side of the street. What a wonder, what a pity they don’t make perfumes like this. Thanks Mugler for this fantastic and delicious fragrance that I treasured like gold in a casket, although it is extremely discontinued. I sold it because, although I used 10ml, I applied it drop by drop due to its potency and rarely found an occasion to use it, so I put it up for sale so someone who looks for it can enjoy it properly.
