Descripción
Ashes by Franck Boclet is a spicy aromatic fragrance launched in 2016, designed for men and women. Its composition, signed by the perfumer, unfolds with a vibrant opening accord of absinthe and cloves. The heart reveals a woody elegance with Atlas cedar, Virginia cedar, guaiac wood, and patchouli, while the base settles on a warm and enveloping blend of incense, woody notes, amber, and musk.

To be honest, I’m not entirely objective here as I generally don’t enjoy this type of perfume. I have a small bottle of Ponsa Barcelona and they smell very similar, but Ponsa feels more natural and is much denser and more intense. Ashes seems far too light to contain the purported 40% natural essential oils. It’s a very woody aroma (the base smells like freshly cut timber) with a smoky, balsamic touch from the incense, nothing sweet or amber-like. From the start, it has a strong spicy character, with sharp spices like clove. I wouldn’t wear it; I use the Ponsa to sleep or relax due to that naturalness, whereas with this one I’ll struggle to finish the sample. For those who enjoy this style, it’s a gem because it is exactly what it is, without asking anyone’s permission. I see it as daily wear for cold or temperate climates, as the smoky point can become suffocating. It seems more masculine, though that’s relative; there are certainly women comfortable with it, just as I enjoy ‘feminine’ perfumes that identify more with me than this. The image it projects is of an older man from the past, reinforcing his masculinity, the type who shaves daily but doesn’t wax. Hahaha. Don’t buy this if you’re looking for something sexy; it’s more about differentiation, as an olfactory experience or to say ‘here I am’. Scent: 7, Longevity: 8, Projection: 6, Value for money: 5, Versatility: 6, Originality: 6, Overall: 6.5

I like the scent, but it’s a bit much. For the price, I expected more than just a pleasant aroma; I was looking for novelty, evolution, and potency, yet I found something decent but ordinary, with poor longevity and projection. It starts with an intense, raw clove note, which is the fragrance’s best part, before moving to a smoky, liturgical incense that doesn’t win me over. I think designer perfumes like Gentleman EDP cover this niche more effectively.
