Overrated. The opening is mediocre. The dry-down happened to me exactly as other users reported, with the difference that in my case it died there without reaching a happy ending. It gave me the impression of being a flanker rushed out to cover losses from the pandemic.
Overrated. The opening is neither here nor there. The dry-down happened to me exactly as it did for juanpasiones, with the difference that in my case it died in that phase without reaching the apparent happy ending. It gave me the impression of being a flanker rushed out like a drowning man’s grab to cover losses caused by the pandemic.
I prefer the Eau de Parfum version to this Parfum because, aside from being very similar in performance like longevity and projection, this version on my skin produces a strange, very metallic, almost rancid smell, as if some component is rotting on my skin, and that lasts through the dry-down phase for quite a while. The dry-down eventually becomes very similar to the EdP with that delicious creamy floral and exquisite earthy-woody patchouli, but frankly, that aromatic harshness does weigh on me, and I’m not willing to wait so long for it to pass to reach a dry-down that’s practically identical to the EdP. Another detail is that this Parfum version is more feminine than the EdP; the sweet floral facet is more marked, exquisite, of course, but it didn’t fully convince me. I hope Tom Ford doesn’t lower the quality of the EdP version to give more prominence to this version, which is more expensive to begin with.
I just bought this, the Parfum version. It’s more potent than the original black bottle, similar in some details that don’t clash. I found it exquisite with great potency; you have to try it to see if you like it. It’s a bit more expensive. For me, the original was reformulated; I own it too, and it was a pity it lost longevity and projection.
Very unnecessary; the original is much more interesting. This one is very similar, almost as if it’s the same fragrance but with the richness and density of the original stripped away. It has far fewer facets and lacks the creaminess that the Black Orchid drags you along with. To do this better, they should have simply re-released the original without the downgrade from reformulations. It’s a pity they focus on marketing it this way instead of doing it more honestly, proactively, and with quality.
An elegant, unisex fragrance to wear with poise and confidence. It’s a delicious orchid, with plum and earth, a scent of class and total elegance. Unfortunately, it has a flaw: it doesn’t generate compliments, it’s expensive, and its projection isn’t ideal. The pure scent is the only thing saving this fragrance.
I absolutely love this fragrance. It always brings me memories of the original Black Orchid but with more warmth and sweetness. It’s deeply feminine and intoxicating. It’s changeable and full of nuances. Ideal for celebrations. I’m fascinated from start to finish. Excellent sillage and longevity.
I absolutely love this fragrance! It brings back memories of the original Black Orchid but with more warmth and sweetness. It is deeply feminine and intoxicating, ever-changing and full of nuances. Ideal for celebrations. I’m fascinated from start to finish. It has incredible projection and longevity.
I’m writing this 25 hours after the first application, with only two sprays on my wrist; I can still smell it close to my skin, so longevity is excellent and projection is good without being beast mode. However, I wouldn’t buy it: first, it smells too unisex to me, and I can’t see myself wearing it; second, I asked four girls and they all said the same thing: it smells like an older man (50s or 60s). One even said it transported her to a church at a funeral (presumably she’s smelled perfumes like that in those situations), and I partly agree. After dismissing it for not seeming masculine, I wondered if I’d like it on a woman, and the conclusion was the same: I’d only see it suitable for a lady over 60. Summary: good aromatic quality, neither feminine nor masculine, not at all seductive or playful, ultimately a very stately fragrance.

Having tried the EdP and EdT, I was intrigued that they released a Parfum. First, I tested it on blotter paper and it smelled very similar to the original BO: earthy, sweet, with plum liquor and patchouli. Then I tested it on skin and noticed it’s even sweeter, with that chocolatey, dark accord, but now with plum liquor and a touch of Virginia tobacco, which I believe is rum. It also has a tiny floral and powdery note from the ylang, which I don’t detect in the other versions. The projection is strong at first but fades over time, though it’s always noticeable. Compared to the BO, it’s sweeter at the start and more floral in the dry-down, so it’s not as unisex. It reminds me of Rasasi La Yuqawam Femme (which I like more and costs less) but with more aggressive personality. It remains a winter perfume for special occasions where you want to draw attention, but it doesn’t feel as special as the original BO; perhaps because I’ve already heard the black bottle version and this feels redundant. If you don’t have the black one, compare them and choose the one you like best. If you already have the original, I don’t think it’s worth buying. Pleasant: 7/10, Interesting: 7/10, Versatile: 2/10, Original: 3/10 (a flanker of a mega-imitated scent, but it’s an aroma you don’t usually smell).
I tried both the EdP and EdT, the core versions, before noticing they had released this Parfum. At first, on blotter, it smells very much like the original BO: earthy and cloying, with plum liquor and patchouli. On skin, it feels even sweeter, with that chocolatey, dark touch, but here the plum liquor carries a Virginia tobacco nuance that I believe is rum. There’s a hint of floral and powdery notes, probably ylang, which aren’t present in the other versions. Projection is strong at first, then fades, but it’s always noticeable. Compared to the original, it’s sweeter upon application and more floral as it dries, making it less unisex. It reminds me of La Yuqawam Femme by Rasasi (which I prefer and costs less), but with more aggression. It’s a winter scent for special occasions where you want to turn heads, but I don’t find it quite as special as the original BO, perhaps because I’ve already heard the black bottle version and this feels redundant. If you don’t own the black one, compare them and choose what you like best. If you already have the original, I don’t think it’s worth buying this. Pleasant: 7/10 Interesting: 7/10 Versatile: 2/10 Original: 3/10 (it’s a flanker of a mega-imitated perfume, yet still an aroma you don’t usually smell).
I already had Velvet Orchid but this is another level. Intense but balanced aroma, versatile but not informal. It’s an aroma that envelops me; when I get into a vehicle I must lower the window to let the other occupants breathe, as it floods everything.
I bought it in a moment of self-homage. It had just been launched and it was love at first sniff. Later, over time, I started to investigate and it caught my attention that the parfum is declared to have 6 notes while the EdP has 23… To my clumsy nose, they are very similar. Perhaps, rushing, I would say the parfum version is a bit denser or sweeter. In any case, this screams ‘here I am’. Domineering and dominant. Not everyone can pull it off. There are few occasions in which I use it, as going out into the street to tame lions is not part of my daily life. An alcoholised truffle that makes it the least versatile you can imagine, with a patchouli that tints the matter with old-school touches. All that accompanied by legendary longevity, on me at least. Of all from the house, and they have many now, for my personal taste it remains the best. No idea how a black orchid smells, but this certainly loses me, loses me, loses me…
I grabbed it in a moment of self-homage and fell in love at first sniff. Upon researching, I noted the Parfum has six notes compared to the EdP’s twenty-three, but my clumsy nose finds them almost identical; perhaps the Parfum is slightly denser or sweeter. Either way, it screams ‘here I am’: fortified, dominant, and not very versatile. I only wear it on special occasions because taming lions isn’t part of my daily life. A truffle with old-school patchouli and legendary longevity. Of all the house’s offerings, it remains the best for me. I have no idea what a black orchid smells like, but this one truly bewitches me.
I smelled it for the first time months ago and didn’t like it. Recently, looking for something original and rare, I remembered it and read the olfactory pyramid and reviews. I became infatuated and went to smell it again. I took my time, let it settle and evolve. It has been a discovery, something I had never smelled before. I like to apply it after a shower, because it blends with the heat of body moisture and emits a halo that envelops everything. It’s an enigmatic scent, coming from the earth with moisture and a hint of sweet and bitter… all difficult to describe, and that is where its originality and charm lie. I perceive it with every movement and I like what it makes me feel. People have asked me in amazement what I’m wearing that smells so special, and that defines the perfume: it is very special and knows how to make itself present. I’ve worn it for 12 hours and I still feel it when I move, without being invasive.
What a perfume! I sense something verbal in it that I can’t decipher… I wouldn’t buy it, I think I wouldn’t find an occasion to use it; I feel it should be richer for a male pH 😍
I bought a 3 ml decant to try it. I’m not an expert, so I don’t know if it smells of truffle (chocolate?) or ylang-ylang. I describe it from my ignorance: at first it’s earth with liquor and something fruity. Then the earth fades and it’s left with liquor, fruit, and a touch of earthiness. It lasted on my arm until the next day, even after bathing. I didn’t dislike it, but it’s difficult to know when to use it… I imagine it for late-night business outings, but without those meetings I can’t use it, haha. Personally, I would love to have it in my collection, as after a few hours I can’t stop smelling it; it’s very enigmatic. But the price is not accessible for me… I’ll settle for the decant for now. As an olfactory experience, I found it brilliant, very different from other perfumes.
I bought a 3ml decant to try it. Not being an expert, I can’t tell if it smells like chocolate truffle or what the Ylang-ylang is. From my ignorance: at first, it smells of earth, liquor, and something fruity; then the earth fades, leaving liquor with fruit and a touch of soil. It lasted on my arm until the next day despite me showering. It’s not unpleasant, but it’s hard to know where to wear it; I imagine it for business nights out, but since I don’t have those, I won’t use it. I’d love to have it in my collection because it’s so enigmatic and haunts you for hours. The price isn’t accessible, so I’m content with the decant. As an olfactory experience, it’s brilliant and very different from other perfumes.
Despite having few notes, it is a complex aroma. On my skin it comes across as powdery, sweet, with a very subtle rum base. I find it very feminine, due to that mix of black orchid which on me comes across as extremely powdery. It’s nocturnal, for formal events, and if you don’t know much about perfumes, it gives the impression of a fragrance for an empowered older lady, because it has presence and doesn’t go unnoticed.
I tried Black Orchid in the black and violet bottle; this is my favourite. It’s the same perfume but more intense and long-lasting, delicious and different. You can make it your personal signature; the truffle and rum are noticeable from the start to the end on my skin. It lasts about 10 hours without needing reapplication. It’s an oriental fragrance, not sweet; men and women can wear it regardless of pH and it will smell wonderful. Given the price, which is not moderate, you can buy it with confidence knowing it will last and that people will notice your presence.
Lasts a long time and smells great, although I find it strong and perhaps not very versatile. It suits my wife better than it does me. It’s a great perfume, maybe a bit pricey; for men there might be better options in that style. However, it creates an olfactory memory and you won’t go unnoticed.
In Costa Rica there is a sweets company called Gallito that makes copetines with alcohol; it smells very similar. I tried a dupe, it’s similar but lacks the quality of Tom Ford. The scent is nocturnal and distinct, still niche (not unpleasant, nor too commercial). 5 out of 5 for originality. I wouldn’t buy it solely for the price and perhaps due to a lack of versatility, although it’s not the least versatile; there are others better suited for winter and special occasions. Black Orchid is versatile, but better for the night.
Typical of the line: sublime dry-down, sweet, spicy, and earthy. However, it’s not worth it for that opening which leaves me perplexed (or nauseous), smelling of almost rotten dried flowers, and it lasts only half an hour. It’s an olfactory torture for that final note.
