From start to finish it is a delight, not as strong as the original Black Orchid, nor does it feel unisex; it is very feminine, a velvet flower. It is a perfume to smell like royalty, a luxury to wear, and delicate noses will have no problem as it is not overpowering. Be careful! It is exquisite with tremendous longevity. If you want something exclusive, long-lasting, and ultra-feminine without your fragrance insulting your partner’s nose, do not hesitate. I am surprised and in love; as soon as I can, I will have it. For now, I enjoy the complimentary liquid.
I loved the Black Orchid sample and now I have ordered the Velvet Orchid after reading this. I am blown away by Tom Ford’s perfumes. I didn’t know the brand and it is the best.
Just as I expected, it is exquisite for those who enjoy strong, sweet, and long-lasting perfumes. I get hints of the honey and vanilla from Thierry Mugler’s Angel, but much lighter. It is sweet and feminine, yet with the rum and velvet notes, it has a unisex edge for men who like sweets. It is perfect for winter and evening wear. I recommend it for women aged 30 and above, very elegant, not for casual occasions but for dressing up. It can be worn in the office with a moderate amount so as not to disturb others.
Velvet Orchid smells more feminine than Black Orchid, yet it is neither lighter nor purer. It shares the oriental density of the other, but comes across as more floral and vanilla-based. To me, it is more feminine, though they are distinct fragrances. I would define it as oriental, voluptuous and intense, warm and deep. Very sophisticated.
The sophisticated sibling of Black Orchid, finer and softer. The orchid note is very prominent, a floral that doesn’t seem oriental but is, a wonder for the senses. I haven’t bought it yet, only have samples, but I’m thinking of purchasing it as I absolutely loved it.
It is distinguished. It is less intrusive than Black Orchid but very similar. I own both and use Velvet Orchid for the day and Black Orchid for the evening.
I agree that Velvet Orchid is more feminine, a unique and exotic scent. I wear Black Orchid unisex and it suits me well; it’s a fragrance for discerning tastes. I’ve always wanted to try Black Orchid, and when I finally did, it was exactly as described: unique and dazzling.
Velvet Orchid calls for an elegant look. Its opening is intense yet not overpowering. It has a creaminess that envelops you in a cloud as the hours pass. The longevity is incredible. It is elegant and full of personality.
I’ve been wearing Velvet Orchid for a few weeks and was excited by my blind love for Black Orchid. My sisters and friends adored it. It started with a floral orchid punch that I thought was too much for me; I tried to get rid of it by giving it to my mum (who wears Knowing) and a stylish friend (who wears Angel), but both found it too floral and I was wrong. I continued with my personal test and it’s fantastic: by night it settles and by dawn it remains the same, velvety, without turning into a pumpkin Cinderella. With autumn and winter here, it’s perfect for stepping out of being ’emperrifollada’ and looking elegant, different and unique, sure that no one else is wearing it.
Before spending a fortune, prioritise feeling good; Velvet Orchid sells exclusivity rather than pure quality. It smells similar to Black Orchid but is more predictable: with the notes in hand, you know exactly what you’re getting, unlike its older sister. The opening is an aggressive rum and honey blast, nothing more. The heart is floral yet dirty, rough and slightly synthetic, although the dose of orchid saves it from mediocrity. The base is an oriental war with Peruvian balsam and smoky vanilla that drowns everything; I doubt there’s any hop or suede there, and that’s a flaw. It’s not velvety or glamorous, it’s more feminine than the other, but its ridiculous price and Art Deco design don’t justify the spend if you’re not in your home country. It’s my perfume, but with limits.
At first I hesitated, thinking it was for older people, the typical scent of your grandmother’s friend, but after a while I noticed it smelled sweet, elegant and totally out of the ordinary. I loved it, bought it, and it is an aroma that accompanies me the rest of the day.
A pleasant attraction that one person exerts over another: this is how I define eroticism, and this is the perfect definition for this fragrance. Velvet Orchid is delicious, with an initial explosion of rum, honey and flowers, before settling into creamy vanilla and sublime myrrh. In my view, it is for an independent, confident woman who needs nothing and no one, leaving a trail of admiration. Luxurious, sweet, sexy and erotic; the definitions never end. For women aged 30 and above, young girls should abstain. Less dark than Black, but more feminine. Impressive longevity and trail. Exclusive night wear. If you want something different, do not hesitate. My only gripe is the price, but it is worth it. My favourite perfume on my wife’s skin. Cheers to Tom Ford for this masterpiece. Cheers to all.
Another beautiful fragrance known for decanting. Velvet Orchid is the younger sister of Black Orchid; it shares much of its dry down, is equally gorgeous but now tamed. It is mystical, sexy, coquettish, enveloping and succulent, yet without the bewitched femme fatale vibe of Black. It is a great option for those who couldn’t handle Black’s untamable character: same DNA, but simpler to wear. It opens with boozy honey, then orchid and fleeting white flowers join in; once settled on the skin, elegant vanilla, myrrh and sandalwood emerge. Great elegance, captivating allure, impressive trail and longevity. Exclusive night wear. If you want something different, do not hesitate. My only gripe is the price, but it is worth it. My favourite perfume on my wife’s skin. Cheers to Tom Ford for this masterpiece. Cheers to all.
I could not agree more with @VainillaDulce. I always read your reviews; you have a gift and your expression is impossible to misunderstand. <3 Velvet Orchid opens old and boozy, as if after years of not wearing it you thought: oh, it smells great but has it gone off? In the heart notes it is much more floral than Black, less aggressive, sexual and mysterious. More elegant and velvety, far more wearable. In the dry down, myrrh, vanilla and orchid stand out. It is lovely, long-lasting with a moderate trail (never heavy).
With this Tom Ford, you simply cannot go unnoticed: it is intense, sophisticated and sensual. It is pricey, but worth every penny for its originality, trail and lasting power.
I like the initial sensation, but once it dries down, it smells only of sandalwood, jasmine, and vanilla. The longevity is marvellous, but I miss an acidic note or the bergamot from the opening to cut through that cloying sweetness. It certainly reminds me of the original Alien, perhaps due to the jasmine. I like it, but I’m not sure I’ll repurchase.
By far, it’s my most elegant perfume, but not in a fussy way. It’s a scent that says HERE I AM, nothing discreet. If you use the right amount, it’s rich and wonderful, but oh dear friend, if you overdo it, you’ll overwhelm everyone. Once I made that mistake, but I learned my lesson. I like it from the moment I apply it, but when it settles… it’s exquisite. Top category.
Without a doubt, it’s the younger sister of Black Orchid: more shy and discreet, yet with presence and elegance. Unlike Black, I don’t feel it’s unisex; it’s more feminine and floral. It has a good trail and longevity. If Black felt too heavy for you, give this a try; it will surely conquer you.
Velvet Orchid is less overpowering than the original Black (before the reformulation), yet still intense. Straight out of the bottle, it smells of boozy orchid (thanks to the rum), then the honey emerges, giving it that velvety touch; I notice the sandalwood after a few hours, along with the suede. I adore the trail; you’re coquettish and you steal glances. I admire your staying power and hope they don’t reformulate you. I have a decant and now I need your full bottle.
I was looking for something with character and off the beaten track. Velvet Orchid caught my eye, and after trying it, I bought it straight away. I really like it, and it grows on me with every wear. It never goes unnoticed; it stands out for its elegance. It’s not for very casual outings, but rather for when you’re dressed up. It’s not fresh enough for a 30-degree summer day, but in colder months and for special occasions, it’s a winner. To me, it reminds me of Mugler’s Angel, but personally, I prefer Velvet Orchid.
Wonder in a bottle.
From my olfactory tastes, nothing attracts me. It smells like an older lady, like Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium from the late 90s. It makes me feel sick and offers nothing new.
The scent is exquisite… a rum and honeyed aroma, slightly chocolatey (but dark chocolate), and I can smell the truffle note from Black Orchid, but unlike the latter… the longevity, fixity and sillage on me leave much to be desired. Unfortunately, it’s a fragrance that hypnotises me for only about 30 minutes; after this time, I have to literally bury my nose in the spot where I applied the perfume to feel it… it’s a pity because it doesn’t play well with my skin. Definitely a good example of: 1.- you must test before buying. 2.- just because the original or another from the same brand is excellent or matches your skin well doesn’t mean all the others will be the same. 3.- just because it’s a prestigious brand doesn’t mean its perfumes are excellent in longevity and projection for everyone… every person is different and the fact that half the world wears it for long hours doesn’t mean it will be the same for you… you might get lucky or, like me… end up disappointed.
Delicious perfume, caramelised honey and flowers, rich from start to finish. Pity that the dry-down arrives too soon for me; after 4 hours it had already disappeared, and the sillage is moderate only for the first hour, which gives a rather poor quality-to-price ratio. Fortunately I tested it several days with a decant; I won’t buy it much to my regret.
More feminine than the original Black Orchid and more wearable. I gave it to my mother because she adores floral scents. It’s a very well-made oriental floral. I never wore it myself, but on her it highlighted a combo of sweet roses and orange blossom with an ambered oriental sandalwood from the heather. I don’t know if they reformulated it, but when it first hit the market it had good fixity and sillage. Perfect for elegant women with a formal style, good for leisure, meetings, going out for lunch or dinner. It’s seductive, ideal for romantic dates and any age. A young woman can wear it without issue if she likes prominent orientals. A well-made and up-to-date perfume. It smells stylish.
Intelligent, beautiful women and excellent forum companions: try this good proposal from Tom Ford, batch 2017, which I tested all afternoon on my skin yesterday. It’s worth it; I loved it. Between 20 and 30 minutes, I felt that stars like Jennifer Aniston, Penélope Cruz or Julia Roberts in their prime could wear it. The opening is floral and slightly sweet, with honey present, soft rum that blends well with jasmine, orange blossom, magnolia and a subdued but persistent orchid right through to the end, giving it a unique personality. The dry-down stage (3-4 hours in this batch) is the most feminine. The citrus notes are soft but fleeting. It’s an oriental floral, versatile and elegant, lending stature to any age, though it would look better on someone 25 and up. The honey yields to a less prominent but sweet vanilla base. The floral notes are clean and pleasant, inviting people to get closer. The dry-down (5 hours, not long-lasting) is a blend of myrrh, sandalwood and vanilla close to the skin, soft and agreeable, the most unisex part. No woman would go unnoticed and it would surely be appreciated; I would turn my head without shame. Suitable for day and night, ideal with cool or mild temperatures, perhaps autumn or spring. I don’t usually give ratings, but I’m making an exception here: Scent: 9/10, Longevity: 7/10, Sillage/projection: 7/10, Versatility: 8/10, Price: 6/10. Cheers.
Curious how the perfume changes on paper versus skin. I promised myself not to get dizzy when I tried it in the perfumerie and chose this one. First on my hand, then on paper… what a difference! On my skin (with my pH), it’s super feminine—a velvety, delicate orchid with white flowers, honey and rum at the start. As it dries down, it becomes muted with vanilla. On paper, it smells more like a sibling to Black Orchid: masculine, with sandalwood, myrrh and suede, and citrus notes at the beginning. Imagine the difference. I would have bought it on the skin that day; on paper, I thought ‘not at all what I smelled on my hand’. Totally recommend testing on skin to see which notes come out. The longevity disappointed me a little compared to Black Orchid, but it lasted a decent 4-5 hours, then it faded to skin scent.
With Velvet Orchid, I feel like a proper lady.

Warm, sexy and classy. The honey and myrrh dominate, creating an intoxicating effect that transports me to bohemian Parisian parties in the 1920s. It reminds me of tobacco in a smoky, nocturnal setting; in this era of clean scents, it sounds a little old-fashioned.
A very pretty perfume that clings to the skin, powdery, soft, and floral, tender. It reminds me of my grandmother’s lipstick when I was a child. A pity it doesn’t project on me, but on my mother it goes beyond the arm, it’s brilliant and lasts for hours.
I tried it to get to know it. Before I used Black Orchid based on reviews and it didn’t disappoint me, although it seemed more masculine to me and my partner, so I kept it. In contrast, I tried this one and in one phrase: I can’t wait to use it on her skin. Fantastic, feminine, provocative, for a strong, confident woman with presence.
It’s a beautiful perfume, more feminine than its sibling Black Orchid. It’s a floral bomb, sexy and feminine. The blend of orchids, flowers, and spices creates a sensual aroma. While I imagine Brigitte Nielsen or Grace Jones with the Black on its androgynous side, with the Velvet I see myself as Monica Bellucci or Isabel Adjani, more voluptuous.
Opulent orchids, an incredible perfume with ten-out-of-ten longevity and projection. Unisex, ideal for cold days, elegant, versatile, and very unique. Simply delicious!
I know it little, so I can’t comment on old batches. I love it; it could be my signature scent if I believed in that. It’s versatile but very ‘ladylike’, elegant, floral, and showy. That doesn’t mean it’s only for women or older people; with the rum note, a man would wear it without issue. Now the problem: it lasts quite a bit, but projects little. It’s basically skin-only and on textiles. On clothes it lasts much longer, like almost everything. The good thing is it’s not difficult to wear, it’s not annoying, and it has no strong oud notes or weird dry-downs.
On the first spray it smells of alcohol, but once it dries it’s irresistible. I don’t think it’s a ‘lady’ perfume; that’s more Black Orchid; this one is opulent and has presence. I’m sorry it doesn’t last as promised. It’s my fourth Tom Ford and I’m starting to understand their style: very particular notes that don’t get confused with others. However, so far the Thierry Muglers last longer, so I’ve kept those as my signature. I’m building the Tom Ford collection and hope to find one that lasts longer because they’re delicious and distinct, and it’s a pity they fade with time.
Velvet Orchid is floral, sweet, and ambered, with an orchid that screams elegance and warmth. Although it’s not my style, I recognise the ingredients and quality are top. The only flaw is the price, which depends on your wallet. It’s interesting to try the Tom Ford collection, but test before buying as it’s not for everyone. Distinctive olfactively, yes.
So much money for smelling like mosquito repellent citronella?
I love the scent: fresh, floral, and intense, with exquisite honey that blends perfectly with the flowers and orchid. The myrrh and sandalwood at the end tie everything together. The quality is impeccable, but on my skin it’s a disaster: it doesn’t last, doesn’t project, and after 20 minutes I feel nothing. By an hour, there’s no trace. A real shame as it’s my favourite.
It’s a softer, kinder version of Black Orchid, with floral touches that make it more feminine. Ideal if the original’s intensity puts you off. The downside is that it doesn’t last or project; it becomes imperceptible after two hours. I’d only buy it at a massive discount.
