Descripción

Cologne Indélébile by Frederic Malle is a citrus fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2015, this composition was created by perfumer Dominique Ropion. Upon release, bergamot, lemon and rosemary provide a fresh and vibrant opening; the heart reveals neroli, orange blossom, narcissus and geranium, imparting a luminous florality; while the base settles on musk, patchouli and benzoin, closing with a warm and woody finish.

Citrus cologne, very musky with a marked soapy effect, resembling the classic 4711 and, in the musky aspect, ‘Acqua Universalis’ by Francis Kurkdjian (of which I am not a fan). Perhaps Frederic Malle’s is slightly superior, with a bit more accomplished citrus and the floral notes of orange blossom and neroli, nothing novel or more inspired than hundreds of similar fragrances. All this with a large amount of musk. The result is a cologne simply ‘passable’, which has left me with the sensation of smelling a cheap perfume and with a ridiculous and lamentable quality-to-price ratio. A joke of bad taste to pay 200 euros for 100ml, it seems madness. The performance might be slightly superior to direct competition, although it’s not spectacular and the trail is low after the first 30 minutes. I hope it’s a coincidence that the Frederic Malle house has been bought by Estée Lauder. I insist, I want to think it’s a coincidence that their first launch turned out like this… 😉

  • White floral, light, and fresh fragrance similar to Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino (although that one lasts longer and has better projection). The central axis is neroli and orange blossom surrounded by citrus, resting under a cloud of vaporous musks. The fragrance is well-made and the scent is pleasant. However: With the number of magnificent works Malle has, they shouldn’t make this type of commercial and easy fragrance (not in line with their philosophy), even trying to imitate Ford’s style (negative point). The quality is mid-range, but Malle usually works with excellent materials. The sensation of the floral nuances, although not bad, feels quite synthetic in parts (another negative). All this leaves me thoughtful, especially regarding Drake’s reflection on the brand’s acquisition by Estée Lauder. Will their executives have influenced merchandising and sales decisions? Surely they have. If Cologne Indélébile is an example of this new policy, they should improve because they are not on the right path. Summary: Making a dubious quality neroli with musk (at the prices Malle deals with) doesn’t seem to me to be a very original or artistic exercise. Rating: 5.

  • Do you like it? No thanks 👎🏼 Cologne Indélébile: Opens with lots of neroli-orange blossom with citrus on a light, soapy (synthetic) musk base. The citrus isn’t potent and dissipates very quickly, leaving a musky scent with neroli-orange blossom traces. Unisex, versatile for daytime use, classic cut, and with very modest performance. It’s not very fresh and stupidly boring. The perfume screams the word ‘generic’ to the four winds. Nothing impressive, not even in terms of quality. Smelling it blind, it passes for a designer perfume; nothing negative about that, but the negative is that this is niche and costs us$295 for 100ml. I understand that Frederic Malle is a luxury house but I don’t feel, in this case, that it stands out, but rather that it falls short. I don’t understand why waste time making a mediocre perfume and I don’t care that Ropion is the perfumer. Still in production, truly is this sold? Do people buy it? 🔎 A very similar and much better, livelier, fresher, and more pleasant scent following that same line would be ‘Eau de Jade’ by Armani Privé. Not everything in perfumery has to be groundbreaking, but for the work this perfume offers, it has a ‘cheerful’ tone and is very well made. I feel it stands out, nothing more. Ropion has made great perfumes that left me speechless, but this is one that has left me speechless with boredom. I wouldn’t buy it even at half price and I find it hard to recommend it. 🎶 Thank you, but no…🎶

COLOGNE INDÉLÉBILE BY FREDERIC MALLE (DOMINIQUE ROPION): To review this work by Dominique Ropion well, one must clear the mind of stigmas and depersonalise, otherwise we will fall into the classic criticism: ‘This is a Nenuco for the rich to trick the poor’. Let’s explain what this fresh and versatile scent smells like: upon spraying, an acidic lemon jumps out for a few seconds before flooding us with the freshness of neroli, a complete neroli with its green and white facets. Musk notes and orange blossom are added, forming a classic, little innovative aroma, but one that fills you with joy and jubilation as it approaches the nose, because it smells of childhood, of breeze, of the first rays of sun on a summer morning. It is all that and more, pure and bright, not at all alcoholic and completely natural, a genuine pleasure to smell, because yes, it’s like having your nose inside those musk-filled flowers with citrus touches. I can’t find a single negative in the fragrance; any negative comment comes from the critic’s personal or social issues; the fragrance has no ‘buts’, it is and feels very natural and good. In reality, is it worth spending 265 euros on a fresh scent with average projection and longevity? My answer is no. But if you enjoy financial freedom or are passionate about perfumery and want to know all its facets, this is the scent for you, don’t miss it.

I smelled it and thought it was 100% Nenuco; I kept smelling it and found no difference. It smells very well, but it is just Nenuco, which you can find in a 10 euro bottle if you’re lucky. And the same longevity.

Although the neroli is fleeting and a cologne isn’t meant to last forever, calling it Nenuco is reductive. It is more of a musk-laden citrus in the Ropion style, with a touch of narcissus that gives it a very austere freshness, as if they wanted to bring old-school florality to modern times. The top note is extremely citrusy and fresh, without any alcoholic sensation, with that super-refreshing effect. It doesn’t smell like the classic acidity of 4711, but rather it is finely implemented. Then the floral heart slides into a warm, creamy, and slightly lasting base, which is the great difference from the cologne being discussed. That residual base of neroli, orange blossom, and musk smells cosy, soft, and clean, making it hard to move your nose away from the back of your hand. Cologne Indélébile isn’t new, but it has its own sunny, southern charm, present without being intrusive. What bothers me is that it draws on existing aromas, which is ill-suited to the house’s level, and the price is far too high to justify buying it.

  • I’m surprised to find myself disagreeing with Jerry Drake, whom I still follow and admire, but sometimes things just don’t add up. To my nose, this Cologne Indélébile is simply the S3 by Legrain at 300 euros. If you add a performance of exactly two minutes and a projection of just 30 centimetres, the whole thing becomes a joke or a scam. Fortunately, I bought a 5 euro decant; I can’t stop wondering who on earth paid out for the 100ml bottles.
