Descripción
Velvet Iris by Essential Parfums is a creation from the woody musky floral olfactive family, designed for men and women. This new fragrance, launched in 2025, was conceived by nose Dominique Ropion. Its olfactive structure unfolds with top notes of buchú, pink pepper, and tamarind; a heart composed of iris root, iris, galbanum, and lentisk resin; and a base evoking saffiano leather, sandalwood, and labdanum.

The third time I’ve lost track of Ropion… After Hacivat Oud and Hope, here we have an iris under the Essential Parfums label. The composition video on YouTube is lovely. Velvet Iris opens with a dominant powdery iris, with earthy and spicy notes, accompanied by a green/fresh tone that gives it life. But this lasts only in the opening; as it dries, the green disappears, leaving a powdery iris over a light woody base. The performance is modest, especially the longevity, which isn’t good on my skin. It’s unisex with a masculine leaning due to the opening. The quality and price (88 euros for 100 ml) are excellent, although it didn’t make me say ‘I need this’. The dry-down felt ‘meh’, very muted, with the opening being the most pleasant. There are better irises like the Moroccan Iris by Lorga or the Panthea Iris by SHL. Velvet Iris is the cheapest of them all, with a designer price, but very dry. Would I buy it? No. – A bientôt.
Galbanum is the star alongside a earthy orris at the start. The dry-down is an intense, slightly spicy, bright green scent, like damp earth. It’s a marvel that breaks with the usual. Unfortunately, as it dries, the perfume retreats and becomes very skin-scented, a pity because its evolution is delicious: the iris softens and gains creaminess thanks to the sandalwood, fulfilling its name of velvet iris. The saffiano leather feels like a soft suede reinforced by labdanum. The first hour is magnificent, then it becomes a skin scent for about six hours. I wear it on clothes to enjoy it as it dries. Moreover, Essential Parfums’ service was ten out of ten: the bottle arrived broken, but they sent another one instantly. The eco-friendly packaging leaves areas exposed to knocks, but their customer care is fantastic.
I’m adding this because, while I’m not an olfactory expert, I believe that at such a reasonable price, it’s worth reading reviews before buying blindly. I was thrilled to see Essential Perfums had Iris, as I adore commercial iris notes from big brands. However, the opening, a green galbanum, felt sharp and less welcoming than I expected; I was left perplexed. After forty minutes of that intense greenness, the base finally emerged, much more pleasant, but the issue is that by the time it blooms, it lacks projection and you have to get very close. It’s a powdery blend of sandalwood and leather, but there’s no trace of the dreamy iris I was hoping for. It surely has its fans, but for me, it wasn’t it; I’ll keep looking for other iris scents.
