Descripción

Custo Man by Custo Barcelona is a spicy aromatic fragrance for men. Launched in 2009, this olfactive composition was created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Its top notes unfold neroli, lime, bergamot and juniper berries; the heart reveals African orange blossom, citron, lemon balm and sweet verbena accompanied by a touch of pepper; while the base settles on tonka bean, benzoin, musk and French labdanum.

It is quite floral and has a synthetic note. That last part is addictive, at least for me. They say it resembles Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fleur du Male; I’m not sure if it’s true as I haven’t smelled it, though given they are from the same creator, it could be. What I can say is that it is original. If you are looking for something to set you apart from the crowd, give it a try.

  • Wonderful. True, it resembles Jean Paul Gaultier, yet it has its own personality. A lovely, sweet and masculine scent. Tremendously seductive; it speaks of a man unafraid to show his vulnerable side to a woman. Update: I no longer care for it as I’ve found others I prefer more. In its defence, give it time to dry down, where it becomes far more interesting and tender than that rushed opening.

  • Simply horrendous. I gifted it fully filled, couldn’t tolerate it for even a second, and that despite my love for citrus. A combination of cheap perfume and absolute horror!

  • Simply horrendous. I gave it away full bottle because I couldn’t stand it, even though I love citrus. It’s a mix of cheap perfume and absolute horror!

I’ve just received it and sprayed it on my wrist; after ten minutes I can’t stop smelling it. It’s exquisite, reminiscent of Fleur de Male but with something extra that makes it better, more citrusy. I can already see everyone asking me what I’m wearing and I tell them it’s from Avon, ha. After an hour it’s still superb. A single application lasts a long time. I’m now noticing a similarity with Le Male, but mixed with flowers. It’s very good, even unisex. A solid 10.

  • Along with CK One Shock, another of the few gems among recent commercial perfumes. Very similar to Fleur du Mal (same creator) but with a more interesting and addictive dry-down.

  • I’m genuinely hooked on this. It has that citrus note with white flowers. As others say, it smells synthetic, but I love that part. Over time it softens, becomes sweet, and then lingers close to the skin. The longevity is good and the trail is noticeable. It’s not something to buy blindly because it smells different from what you’d expect from a men’s fragrance, but it has its charm and is worth trying.

Absolutely dreadful. I bought it blindly on a friend’s recommendation and it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Let’s not even say it ‘smells bad’ because that doesn’t exist in perfumes, but this gave me nausea. A cloying, cheap, dense, supermarket scent. Disgusting. One of the worst things I’ve ever smelled. No matter how cheap or discounted it looks, don’t even try it; it’s throwing money down the drain.

I didn’t like it at all. I bought it blindly on a friend’s recommendation and it was one of the worst purchases of my life. I won’t say it smelled bad because a perfume can’t smell bad by definition, but it was nauseating to me. A sweet, cheap, dense, tacky, supermarket DIA smell… ‘disgusting’. One of the worst, if not the worst, I’ve ever smelled. No matter how cheap or discounted it looks, my advice is not even to try it; it’s a waste of money, literally.

  • It has a citrus opening mixed with a white floral aroma (I imagine something like a jasmine). Its opening is sharp, but after a few minutes, the floral note stands out above any other, softening its development. It gives me the sensation of a jasmine with dew, fresh, humid, freshly cut, which emits a lot of scent. A floral aroma that one can easily feel in a cemetery. At the beginning of its development, it has an important trail that softens after an hour, being moderate from then on. A duration of 6 hours, projecting easily for the first 2-3, which is boosted with a bit of heat. I tested it at the end of winter/beginning of spring. They say it resembles JPG’s Fleur du Male, something I am unaware of since I have never been able to try the latter.

  • A men’s fragrance behind whose nose lies the genius Francis Kurkdjian. Citrus, green, floral with a tendency to sweeten slightly. Lime and neroli notes prevail in the opening, accompanied in its evolution by juniper berries that give it a slightly alcoholic character (it could recall a gin tonic garnished with lime and pepper), although its main olfactory memory rests on a vase of white flowers. In its development, these notes fuse with the benjoin and tonka bean that give it depth. We also find salty notes coming from the musk, albeit in a very subtle way. It is not an intense or invasive perfume. Its reaction on my skin is soft, clean, fresh, and very pleasant. It is not a compliment machine, being its function to please without standing out. Its longevity on skin oscillates between 6 and 8 hours, projecting for the first 2 and remaining in close range for the rest of its development. A casual character perfume without falling into the sport category.

  • I bought it yesterday and it seems very pleasant to me. It has a citrus opening and then the white flowers and tonka bean stand out, giving it a soft sweetness. The longevity is reasonable for this type of fragrance, between 4 and 6 hours, until it becomes almost imperceptible. It is an ego fragrance, as it has little projection, no more than 90 minutes, but it is very well balanced. I liked it a lot, it’s worth it.

  • Picked it up yesterday and it smells fantastic: starts citrusy, then white florals and tonka bean take over with a soft sweetness. The longevity is just right for this kind of fragrance, lasting around 4–6 hours before it fades almost completely. It’s quite selfish with poor projection (less than 90 minutes), but very well balanced. I’ve loved it immensely; it’s definitely worth it.

I don’t know the Fleur du Male, but I do know the Le Male, and you can definitely hear that DNA in the base. At first, it’s a fresh, powdery white floral, then it becomes light and sweet (where the Le Male comes in) with a herbal touch. An interesting and appealing scent. My hard drive reminded me of Le Male, Versace The Dreamer, Dior Homme Eau de Toilette, and Loewe 001 Man. Clean, fresh, subtle, nothing grotesque, white, herbal, lightly sweet, powdery and addictive; I can’t stop smelling my arm. It lasts 6–7 hours, projects for 2–3 hours with a moderate and soft scent, and the opening trail is noticeable at 3 metres: a striking presence without being annoying.

  • paolobertucci

In my experience, I don’t know Fleur du Male, but I do know Le Male, and in the background, that DNA is detectable. However, in the foreground, there is a fresh, white, talc-like floral, then it becomes slightly sweet (that’s where the Le Male DNA appears), but there is also something herbal. A very interesting and attractive aroma. Upon knowing it, my hard drive suggested a certain coincidence with Le Male, then with Versace The Dreamer, followed by Dior Homme Eau de Toilette and finally Loewe 001 Man. A clean, fresh, subtle sensation, nothing grotesque, white, herbal, with a slight sweet and talc-like addictive quality; I can’t stop smelling my arm. Performance: it lasts about 6-7 hours, projecting for 2-3 hours a moderate and soft aroma, and the opening trail is well perceived at 3 metres, with notable presence but not annoying.

  • A riot of lime, orange blossom, and citronella. That’s how I describe Custo at first, but then it develops a smoky side thanks to the tonka bean and benjoin, giving it a spicier tone and a subtly peppery kick, almost imperceptible. The undisputed star is the orange blossom. The truth is, seeing how Francis handles orange blossom here as well as in Elie Saab Le Parfum, one notices the great capability of this creator. The resemblance to Fleur du Male is quite clear; this nose is accustomed to leaving traces of DNA from his past creations in his new ones. It’s normal and natural for him. It’s a ‘bit synthetic’, I won’t deny it, but I think that idea accompanies the advertising image: garish colours, futuristic, androgynous. The bottle is a beauty, made of lots of glass; you can feel the quality when you hold the weight; it surely launched at the brand’s peak. Moderate trail and very good fixative. I loved it.

  • Ugh, I didn’t like it… obviously, it’s not unisex. This is something someone comfortable on the borderline between feminine and masculine would wear. It’s a perfume full of orange blossom.

  • BassoProfumo

It’s incredible how good it smells when sprayed from the atomiser and shortly after on the skin. But once it dries down, a very sharp note dominates, which I imagine is the bitter orange, and for me, it doesn’t smell good at all.

  • BassoProfumo

It’s incredible how good it smells when sniffed from the atomiser and shortly after applying it to the skin. But then, once it dries, a very sharp note dominates, which I imagine is the orange blossom, and frankly, it doesn’t agree with me at all.

  • I was lucky enough to get one on Wallapop and I have to say, it’s a bomb. I’ve had it for about 10 years and it still gives me the same sensations. I love that sharp opening. It has good longevity and trail.

  • One of the best perfumes I have ever had in my collection. An arresting, elegant, and masculine scent that doesn’t go unnoticed and has brought me countless compliments.

Custo Man and Fleur du Mâle are cousins, not clones. If you own both, you know they share DNA, but side by side, the difference is stark. Custo Man opens with neroli and a green, herbaceous touch of verbena that gives it a certain roughness and bitterness. Fleur du Mâle, however, adds petitgrain and concentrated chamomile to boost the floral side, making it much sweeter and deeper. In the heart, Custo Man stays spicy, with a peppery note that refreshes, but then a metallic, synthetic note creeps in, taking away a bit of the magic. Fleur du Mâle remains in a sweet, hypnotic floral cloud, gaining in intensity and olfactive cleanliness. Towards the dry down, they draw closer: Custo Man with musk, tonka, and that classic Kurkdjian benjoin that recalls Le Mâle; Fleur du Mâle with chamomile, a hint of honey, and the same benjoin. Ultimately, despite their similarities, they are very different. The Spanish one is spicier, bitter, and urban, almost masculine. The French one is more floral, soft, and rounded, of a higher calibre. Both have their strengths, but for me, Fleur du Mâle wins hands down.
