Descripción

Essenza di Zegna by Ermenegildo Zegna is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. Launched in 2003, this composition was created by Alberto Morillas and Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. The top notes unfold with bergamot and lemon, accented by a touch of zesty lime; the heart reveals myrtle and cardamom; while the base notes settle on musk and amber.

I found it between 2004 and 2006 while searching for the perfect balance of scent, longevity, and heat resistance, before the Summer versions of Eternity and One Summer were released. I tested it in many locations and climates; I love it and it has a very original, pleasant scent. It suits me best in temperate weather, though it is light, not too much. I see it as timeless, ideal for those over 25. The notes I recall from the empty bottle are citrus and spicy. I would like to buy it again: in fact, when I ran out, I went to the perfumer and there was no stock; they offered me the Z by Zegna, but I didn’t like it due to the climate here. It’s on my shopping list for 2013.

  • Super rich, fresh fragrance with incredible longevity. I’d definitely buy it again and recommend it 100%.

Ideal for hot days: it is fresh, pleasant, and in its dry-down it comes very close to D&G Light Blue and BVL Aqua. As a point for improvement, its longevity and projection are average to low; it is good, but I wish it were stronger.

  • Essenza di Zegna is an aromatic and discreet fragrance, timeless masculinity and semi-formal, Italian in a contemporary sense. It’s suitable for almost three seasons; it doesn’t reach winter due to its shy beauty, which would be a hit if it had more body. The citrus opening at the start is confusing, giving way after a few seconds to a very Mediterranean, energetic citrus sensation, but it disappears after 10 minutes. Then remains a scent like pink pepper mixed with cardamom and a slightly green, sweet floral. It’s surprising that it was born under the sign of Gemini; it seems Alberto Morillas and Jacques Cavalier didn’t quite agree, resulting in a bipolar personality that could have been much greater. Unfortunately, it fails to be sufficiently citrusy or aromatic, features no declared wood although it is perceptible, and has an amber of quality but little integration. By nature, it demands over-application and reapplication at 4 hours. When it reaches its heart phase and lasts about 4 hours before falling into a skin trail for 3 hours, the ensemble emulates a pleasant and sophisticated pink pepper, semi-formal. Here, the myrtle imparts a shy, encrypted floral sweetness within the cardamom and amber, resulting in an aromatic fragrance with an effect of sweet and acidic pepper. I assure you that once it loses its top notes, it is very similar to Guerlain Homme, and in the opening it bears a certain resemblance to Carolina Herrera Chic, although more citrusy, lighter, and less sweet. Essenza di Zegna is a fragrance with many broken hearts after being discontinued and very difficult to source in Mexico; there are specialised sites where they ask for around 250 dollars for a soap and 100ml perfume. Something out of order, as although it is beautiful, it doesn’t quite reach masterpiece status.

It’s suitable for almost three seasons; it doesn’t reach winter due to its shy beauty, which would be a hit if it had more body. The confusing citrus opening at the start (about 15 seconds) gives way to a vigorous, energetic, very Mediterranean citrus sensation, but it disappears after 10 minutes. What remains is a scent with pink pepper, cardamom, and a slightly green, sweet floral touch. It’s surprising that it was born under the sign of Gemini; it seems Cavalier worked on the base and Morillas on the top notes, creating a bipolar personality that could have been much better. Unfortunately, it isn’t citrusy or aromatic enough, no declared wood is mentioned although it is perceived, and it has a quality amber but it is barely present. By nature, it demands heavy application and reapplication at 4 hours. When it reaches its average performance and lasts about 4 hours before becoming just skin for 3 hours, the base and middle notes emulate a pleasant, sophisticated pink pepper; the myrtle gives a shy floral sweetness encrypted in the cardamom and amber, resulting in an acidic and sweet scent. When it loses its top notes, it is very similar to Guerlain Homme, and in the dry-down it recalls Carolina Herrera Chic, though more citrusy, lighter, and less sweet. Essenza di Zegna has many broken hearts after being discontinued and is very hard to find in Mexico; there are places asking for around $250 for a soap and 100ml fragrance, which I think is excessive since, although it is beautiful, it doesn’t reach the status of a masterpiece.

The best I have ever been able to smell in my years. A fragrance never before seen, incomparable. There is no doubt that I am a fanatic of it.

Dear readers, writing from Argentina. I have never been able to find this fragrance again; is it possible they aren’t importing it to the country? Does anyone have it? It is the best I have ever encountered in perfumes. Best regards.

Towards the end of the year and bidding farewell to 2021, times of nostalgia and remembering those who are no longer with us arrive. That is how it is with this fragrance; I still have 25% of the liquid because, upon realising how difficult it is to source, I decided not to finish it so I can smell this exquisite aroma again. The opening is impressive: it doesn’t smell of alcohol or sting, but rather you perceive a very natural, freshly cut lime, mixed with a herbal touch and natural violet. The heart is pure exquisitez: subtle and sweet cardamom, nothing artificial, with amber giving it body and a floral-sweet trail that captures attention. It has an incredible quality: a freshness that roots itself to you. Unlike others that disappear quickly, here the freshness remains even as the scent fades, much like remembering a delicious kiss even if you don’t recall the exact flavour. The closest match I’ve found is Zegna Uomo, which shares notes but lacks the sweet touch of ambered cardamom. Also Kenneth Cole Signature, which has similar violet and cardamom but with woody notes that steer it elsewhere, though the influence of Essenza Di Zegna is noticeable.

Hello! I don’t know much about notes, but I received this as a gift from my mother for Christmas in 2003. All I can say is that it is totally elegant. I used it when I was 25; it suits adults better, but that scent always reminds me of that lovely detail. My mum is still alive, and this perfume will always be anchored to her memory. I understand it is now hard to find or may no longer be sold, but it is an excellent fragrance.

Hello! I don’t know much about notes, but my mother gifted me this for Christmas in 2003 and it is totally elegant. I wore it at 25, but I think it suits older people better. The lovely memory of that thoughtful gesture from my mother will always be etched in my mind. My mum is still alive, but this perfume will remain forever linked to her. I know it’s hard to find nowadays or perhaps it’s no longer sold, but it is definitely an excellent perfume.

I have 10 millilitres of this delight left. Perhaps the sillage isn’t as strong, but it’s one of the finest fragrances I’ve ever experienced. I hope to find it again one day. If anyone knows of a similar scent, please do share.

I came across this by chance: my grandfather was a great collector and, without him noticing, I tried it and fell in love. Every time I visited, I’d spray it without permission. One day he gifted me an almost new bottle. I kept using it until it became impossible to find. A relative who knew the story found it at an auction in Italy and gave it to me. I have it brand new and unused, but I doubt I’ll use it again. This perfume reminds me so much of my grandfather, R.I.P.

  • All that remains is a memory, as I had it at my grandparents’ house and they used to apply it to me. The scent was wonderful and I remember it lasting for ages.

  • Bought it in 2005 and the last bottle was left behind in a hotel in 2011. I can’t find it in perfumeries anymore; they must have discontinued it. What I loved from the start was that note which smells like banana; reading the ingredients, I believe it’s myrtle.
