Part of the select Essenza line by Zegna, exclusive in their boutiques and comes in a unique 125 ml minimalist, heavy bottle with a magnetic cap. The box includes an envelope with notes from the collection speaking of Calabria bergamot as the thread, along with oud, amber, and myrrh; although they differ from Fragrantica, both are right. The opening is potent, with burnt and resinous wood; the oud is noticeable immediately, dry thanks to the myrrh. At four hours, the oud and amber dominate, sounding more natural than the YSL M7 vintage, which it resembles greatly. Subtly, you can detect the bergamot, a green patchouli, and a touch of rose. At eleven hours, the finish is long with amber and oud, just like the M7. The trail is heavy for the first four hours and then moderate, but always present. Over 12 hours of longevity. It’s a woody oriental ideal for winter or autumn nights, or rainy days; perfect for special occasions. I haven’t tested niche oud to compare it with Montale or Amouage, but it’s the option closest to the original M7, with better quality, denser and more resinous, without the mandarin. If you miss the M7, this is your option. It’s worth double a normal Zegna.
Indonesian Oud is a dry, woody, masculine oriental, as Fragrantica says. It starts with a typical acidic oud touch, but soon the rose and amber take the lead in a linear development. It smells elegant and with quality ingredients. Its versatility is limited: not for daily wear or heat, as it can be a bit heavy, although the scent is very pleasant, reminding me a bit of Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa Oud. Longevity over 8 hours and medium-low projection with just one spray. I tried the new 100 ml in Eau de Parfum format. I’ve loved it for its quality, though I hope the price drops.
I managed to get it at a good price and it’s an incredible fragrance. On me it lasted 16 hours: at first Calabrian bergamot, rose and oud; half an hour later the bergamot and rose fade, revealing undeclared violets that last an hour and a half. By two hours, the bergamot and rose are almost gone, soft patchouli emerges with the oud present, violets in the background. Between three and four hours the patchouli fades, the violet and rose disappear, and the amber accompanies the eternal oud for another three hours. By seven, only a trace of patchouli remains, amber and oud overlap until twelve. Then the amber fades, leaving a light but perceptible oud within five centimetres of the skin until four in the afternoon. With just two sprays the projection was moderate, but with six or seven it would become a heavy trail. I recommend it without hesitation, although the price is high, so try before you buy, as I’ve bought half my perfumes blind.
Having got it at a good price, I must say it’s a wonderful fragrance. On me, it lasted 16 hours. At first, you notice the Calabria bergamot with the rose and oud; half an hour later, the bergamot and rose fade, revealing an undeclared note: violets! which last an hour and a half. By two hours, the bergamot and rose have almost gone, with the patchouli accompanying the oud without overpowering, while the violets linger in the background. By three or four hours, the patchouli fades, the violet and rose disappear, and the amber appears to accompany the eternal oud for another three hours. By seven hours, the patchouli is very far away and the amber overlaps with the oud until twelve. Afterwards, the amber fades, leaving only the oud, now lighter but perceptible at five centimetres from the skin until the end. I only used two sprays, so the projection was moderate, but surely with six or seven it becomes a heavy trail. I recommend it without hesitation, although the price is high, so try before you buy; I’m telling you this as someone who has bought half their perfumes blind.
EDP version. The peculiar thing about this proposal is an acidity that hits you like a door slam when you open the bottle, leaving you dazed and unable to distinguish anything at first; it made me recoil. Instantly, however, you feel great. It’s a potent and decisive scent where the initial impact softens and the bergamot and rose play with the oud, patchouli, and amber fighting for the podium. Persistent and strong, it’s not easy to wear; you need to know this type of fragrance. It has a slightly dirty impact with a subtle dark rose, as if it came straight from the jungle: earthy, exotic, fruity, sweaty, and with an animal touch. It powerfully evokes distant lands, unknown countries, and mysterious places where dreams come true. It’s not stronger than the EDT, but rounder and more woody. It shines like the moon on a winter night. Interesting.
Poor little Essenze line from EZ, I missed out on so much, except for this Indonesian Oud which is pure elegance and class. Without a doubt the best in the collection, 8/10.
It’s a pity the rest of the Essenze line by EZ left me speechless, except for this Indonesian Oud, which is pure luxury, elegant, and classy. Without further ado, the best in the collection, 8/10.
An oud that evokes a wooden pew in an old, dusty church, just as you’re sanding it to restore it, alongside a floral arrangement for a wedding. The blend is pleasant, distinctly masculine, elegant, woody, dry, and fresh; ideal for elegant events regardless of the weather because it’s not invasive. The only drawback is that it gives the impression of something stored away for a long time that needs dusting off, but that ‘something’ is a person. In my view, it has been reformulated: I tried it a while ago and the floral notes were more prominent, whereas in the bottle I bought, the rose is barely present, although it’s the note I appreciate most after the oud. The bergamot adds freshness, but unfortunately my nose can’t detect the patchouli (happens with all of them).
ERMEGENILDO ZEGNA INDONESIAN OUD: Appearances can be deceiving. It’s another Rose and Oud, but it’s not the same. Here you have a vibrant, deep, and wet rose that enhances everything, combined with an exquisite oud that acts as the supporting star while the rose is the protagonist. It’s a refined, elegant, and natural fragrance, perhaps slightly eccentric but not opulent. Not for daily wear, but for events or dates worth the effort. It’s a scent for dressing with class and personality, a romantic olfactory poem that awakens passion and mystery. Perhaps unisex, but in my opinion it shines more on a man who breaks the mould with distinction. A jewel reserved for special occasions where you want to win the grand prize. Totally nocturnal, perfect for fresh or cold nights. Not for youngsters. Scent 10. Good projection. 8-hour longevity. Highly recommended if you like natural scents with a dominant rose.
Appearances can be deceiving: yes, it’s rose and oud, but it’s not the same. Here, the rose is vibrant, sharp, and subtle—alive and wet—while the oud blends with it exquisitely. The rose is the star, the oud the supporting actor. It’s a refined, elegant fragrance, slightly eccentric yet natural, not opulent. Not for daily wear, but for events or dates worth the effort. It’s for dressing with class and personality, a romantic olfactory poem that awakens desire, invites closeness and passion without fear. Perhaps after reflection I’ll say ‘mea culpa’: the mind loses the game against the senses, undefended against that aromatic magic. It could be unisex, but in my opinion it suits men better, as it breaks the mould with more distinction on a man than on a woman. In short, a jewel reserved for special occasions where you want to win the grand prize. Totally nocturnal, ideal for fresh or cold nights. Not for youngsters. Scent 10. Good projection. 8-hour longevity. Highly recommended if you like natural scents with a dominant rose.
