I admit that in perfumery I stayed in the 90s. I was bewitched by colognes from 1990 to 1994, which were fresher, more wearable, and cheerful. My tastes remain there, despite what I have tried since. Jazz Prestige is a 90s fern, a flanker of Jazz. If Jazz smells like the 90s, Jazz Prestige IS the 90s, especially the first half. It is Jazz injected with steroids in its most crystalline and crisp parts. Its bottle says ‘Concentrated Eau de Toilette’ and it is a love for non-aquatic freshness, for the woodland breeze, and for the sharp, green, masculine scent. That scent was the height of sophistication then, energetic, powerful, clean, and radiant like a morning sea. Society grew tired of heavy scents and opted for crisp yet potent aromas; Jazz Prestige is strong, not for everyone. The notes are oakmoss, lavender, spices, flowers, and woods, but said so it is boring. When I wear it, I smell my adolescence: discovering my love for nature, summer mornings cycling to practice martial arts, midday at home after a shower watching music videos before ‘Find Yourself’, falling for any girl who spoke to me, my fascination with my Latin teacher, and reading Greek classics. I smell Pepsi Crystal, Cherry Coke, and tropical juices in glass bottles, the Beatles, and feeling as if I had seen God, the Olympics, and that clean air that expanded into every corner of Barcelona. Yes, Jazz Prestige smells like that to me. Although bad things happened in those years, the memory remains with the luminous parts, and if you distilled it, it would be very similar to this juice.
A masterwork of jazz, Jazz Prestige smells distinct and is one of the few whose name fits its era. It is bold, creative, playful, and unpredictable, with the same shocking structure of a free jazz improvisation. It features a daring blend of shadows and lights, bright notes, and dark nuances. What impresses me most is the opening: an incredibly radiant, fresh, crisp, and sharp accord of green citrus with flowers like geranium, which smells profoundly different from any other citrus floral. I would describe it as abstract, like a Pollock painting: colourful, dynamic, and almost chaotic. Although there are conventional notes of citrus, herbs, and flowers, here they are mixed as if you had thrown them into a blender. Beneath lies a formal and cosy fougère structure, a barber’s symphony with sandalwood, lavender, herbs, carnation spices, smoky notes, and perhaps a touch of leather. The coexistence of these two parts, the classic and the creative, is astonishing. This flanker is a beautiful and creative reworking of the original Jazz, with artistic madness and refined luxury. The citrus and green notes are crisp and clean as an ironed shirt. It reminds me of the ‘mucky’ novelists of the 80s and 90s who depicted rich, spoilt young people; Jazz Prestige shares that vibe: it smells rich, ironic, strange, and vibrant. It plays with classic notes like a postmodern composition. It does not smell like what they would wear, but rather is an olfactory representation of them. In summary: it smells fantastic and was ahead of its time. A jewel worth seeking out.
It was my first perfume in university, a gift that brings back memories of nights filled with compliments. It remains a classic to this day. I recommend it to those who enjoy vintage scents.
