Black Opium Over Red by Yves Saint Laurent is a fruity-floral-gourmand fragrance for women. Launched in 2024, this composition was created by Honorine Blanc, Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne and Olivier Cresp. The base rests on a warm foundation of Madagascar vanilla, coffee and Indonesian patchouli leaves.

  • I just tried it and, unlike the classic version which I find too heavy, this flanker does please me and much. I did not think a Black Opium would please me, I love it in fact ❣️ it has everything I like about Black Opium, without the part that overwhelms me 🪷 It goes into my collection.

  • To me, it smells like dark chocolate with cherry, although it does not have a cocoa note… at first sniff, it smells exactly like that and I like it much more than the Demeter chocolate with cherry. Of course, it remains clear that it is a sibling of Black Opium and one of those very close siblings… the truth is it is nothing novel… it reminds me a lot of one from Zara and even in its dry down it reminds me of Ellie Saab Gone. So if you already have the aforementioned or even the classic B Op, you will get more of the same by acquiring this. It is for very cold weather… the cherry note can be tiring and given its price, I recommend smelling it before buying… now if you are a mega fan of the cherry note like me… then yes, go for it.

  • Mine barely feels at all; I atomised it several times and the scent has no potency. I will leave it for a while, hoping it improves. That disappointed me a lot. The scent is cloying, vanillaised but no more than that. I would not recommend buying it.

  • Juicy, rich cherry peeeerrrrooooo but it cost me that slip into children’s syrup, although it passes quickly. Two hours on the wrist and I no longer feel it. Very close to the skin that Black Opium DNA but very soft, almost imperceptible.

  • I went to try it and I loved it, literally when it comes out it is a fresh, juicy cherry, then it changes and smells exactly like a grenadine, the coffee is barely felt, which I liked, and a soft vanilla. On my skin it lasted about 7 hours, on clothes! days! I really think I will have it in my collection 😍

  • I have been testing this perfume for several days and, although I am not a fan of cherry at all, I eventually bought it. It seems super elegant; it is not as sharp as this note usually is in perfumery. I love its coffee and well-complemented vanilla in the dry down. It is true that it does not have a powerful longevity or trail, but I feel it is perfect for wearing so early when you are going to work.

I tried it in a perfumery; it was my first time entering and I controlled myself to test only five fragrances and give them their time. Here in Argentina, we are just before summer, with lots of heat… To keep it brief, the perfume is rich but the longevity is terrible for a winter fragrance. I have Black Opium Extreme, a bomb… like all the flankers… they are all bombs, but only at first… after two hours, if you haven’t reapplied, it disappears. Rich, but it does not pay off in longevity.

I tried it today and, to be honest, it left me indifferent. It smells very much like the original Black Opium: the artificial coffee note is there, but what stands out most is the cherry, jasmine, and vanilla. Nothing feels natural, which I dislike as it leaves a bitter scent. The good thing is the bottle is gorgeous in the light and has a notable trail. The longevity is over 12 hours on my skin (even after showering) and it lingers all the time.

It smells exactly like coffee. At first, you notice the cherry and a sweet touch, but after a few minutes it turns into a very sweet coffee scent with vanilla. It is not for everyday wear, but rather for the night, in winter or autumn. I love it for special occasions because it is very sensual. I know it does not suit all skin types equally, but believe me, everyone will notice the intensity of the coffee and vanilla.

  • I liked it quite a bit because its moderate intensity doesn’t tire me out like other YSL perfumes. At first it smells of brandied cherry that softens to highlight the coffee and vanilla. It’s very pleasant. A tip: spray it on the nape of your neck so it rubs against the back of your hair; then the hair smells and when people greet you, they notice. Also spray behind the ears and sometimes on clothes.

  • Nefertiti625

I love it; it’s super original. At first it seems like cherry liqueur, and by an hour it’s like the Black Opium DNA but softer and creamier. I’d describe it as a mocha with cream and maraschino cherry, or a black forest cake. Thanks to the black tea note, it becomes interesting and intriguing, not just a sweet gourmand. I bought it. I wish it had more trail after two hours. It lasts days on clothes, but by five o’clock you have to press your nose up close. Scent: 10/10 Trail: 4/10 Longevity: 6/10 Bottle: 10/10

  • At first, I get an intense cherry note, without being overwhelming. But a few minutes later, I notice a very strong vanilla and a synthetic patchouli, reminiscent of the Black Opium original DNA. This fragrance smells like a bakery, extremely sweet and edible. If you like gourmands, you will love it because it smells like something totally edible. Definitely for special night occasions. I have been with different Black Opium flankers for years, but I am not interested in buying this one as it does not feel balanced to me.

  • redvelvetblackbox

I was a little disappointed; the longevity was poor and the cherry barely noticeable. It feels dusty and aged, nothing juicy or youthful, and of course, the rest is the Black Opium DNA. Strangely, my husband liked it a lot, but it left me wanting more.

  • Strawberribunny

A friend gave me a decant in a shop and I loved it. I couldn’t resist buying it; that sweet vanilla, the darkness of the coffee, and the vibrant cherry fascinated me. It has a more energetic touch than the original and I detect a hint of almond. The longevity is good and the trail moderate. People compliment me saying it’s elegant yet youthful. I wear it during the day and for work, although it’s more of a night scent.

  • Oh, what a horror. It smells like Vick’s syrup, just like the Tom Ford cherry ones. To say it resembles Lancôme’s La Nuit Trésor Intense is a sin. If you like cloying cherry aromas for winter use only, go ahead.

  • What a beautiful perfume; it keeps the DNA of the original but is much more gourmand. It lasts a long time on my skin; the cherry is more noticeable if you smell it directly on the skin rather than in the trail. I simply love it.

  • BeatrizBlackwood

I tried it and it seems super versatile; in spring or mild summers, with just a few sprays, it’s perfect. It feels distant from the original and I’ve liked it quite a bit.

  • cuarentaydos

I started with high hopes, but the initial cherry is brutal, like a very strong liqueur. Although I like sweets, this seemed cloying to me. After a while, the scent is exquisite and reveals the original Black Opium. The trail is powerful at first but fades quickly. I prefer mixing it with other more durable red fruits.

  • The opening reminds me of a moist, sweet Black Forest cake. Unfortunately, I don’t like that cake, and neither does this perfume 🙁

  • It smells like brandied cherry at first, but it’s hard to find one that doesn’t sound like liquor. Then it turns patchouli-like and smells of hidden tobacco; it’s heavy and old-fashioned, not for me.

  • Mayitaperfums

I had high expectations for this highly praised perfume, and noooo, it doesn’t smell like cherry. I didn’t sense the coffee notes at all. It overpowered me with the scent; maybe I’ll give it another chance in winter, but for now, no.

  • talejandraglz

The best description is cherry cola. At first, it smells like Dr Pepper-style soda with cherry identical to those bottles. Once it dries down, the common Black Opium appears with subtle vanilla and coffee (it gives me vanilla coffee gum vibes). I love the vibe, so I keep it for special night outs. It’s a pity the projection and longevity are poor; you have to apply a lot for it to last a bit. It’s pricey as it’s new, but I think it’s the best Black Opium alongside Le Parfum. It’s perfect for evening fragrance, super sexy, but not for daytime. Definitely not for anyone seeking something youthful or feminine; it’s more mature and sensual, yet exquisite for Black Opium lovers.

  • Chocolate con licor

It smells like super artificial cherry, literally a cherry soda, potent and not fruity at all. The vanilla and coffee don’t blend and it smells very cheap. It’s not horrible, but I don’t like it; it smells like a forty-five-year-old woman or an aspirational thirty-something, that classic lady scent that complains about everything. The price is high, the trail is moderate, and the longevity is average. 1/10.

  • I was really keen to try it. I thought it would be a cherry beast like the Black Opium (which I can’t stand), but nothing like that. It smells like synthetic cherry, plastic, or a cheap doll. It doesn’t last even four hours and the trail is very low.

  • If you’re looking to smell like a cherry sweet, this is lovely. I was pleasantly surprised: the opening takes me back to old sweet shops, that mix with slightly boozy cherries. It has nothing to do with the original Black Opium, just a faint coffee note at the end. For me, it’s an 8 out of 10 and lasts about six hours.

  • Angelique137

As a fan of Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, I’d say here the cherry doesn’t lead; vanilla is the star. It’s delicious and perfect for feeling cosy in winter.

  • juliaguilera

It starts super soft. Once it dries down, you get vanilla, coffee, and a hint of cherry that intensifies until it reminds me of Mayar Cherry Intense, but with much less projection. I wouldn’t buy it.

  • Black Opium doesn’t kill me, but this one is the king of the family. It smells like pure Mon Chéri: dense coffee, vanilla, and sweet cherries. It lasts forever on the skin and the quality is top-notch.

  • One of my favourite perfumes; the first time I smelled it, I fell in LOVE and it’s no wonder… it’s a magic potion and a compliment magnet; you put it on and you become magnetic. I’ve never been especially a fan of the original Black Opium DNA, but the cherry in Over Red changes it completely; it’s addictive, a super sexy and dark perfume but without losing that characteristic sweet spot (although I emphasise it’s a more ‘natural’ cherry than other cherry perfumes, almost like a cherry liqueur, that’s how my nose perceives it, probably due to the mix of patchouli and coffee. It’s not like a sugared candy). Longevity and trail could be much better; it’s a pity. On clothes, there’s a faint trace from one day to the next, but on skin, it disappears relatively quickly. Nevertheless, it’s so incredibly delicious it’s worth it 100%; there are few fragrances that make me lose my head in the same way this one does.

  • amandiwis11

It’s my favourite winter perfume; since I applied it, even on clothes, the scent gets impregnated; you feel the cherry in the opening when you apply the perfume, and the coffee along with the vanilla once time passes; in fact, that’s the scent left on my garments; it’s exquisite and sweet.

  • DaviniaTolkien

When it first came out, I remember trying it at a Sephora… and while it didn’t displease me, it didn’t fascinate me either; I felt a very subtle cherry 🍒 and the typical sweet BO DNA… However, as a good fan of the note, I did want it in my collection. Time passed, and recently I saw it on a great offer, and worse still; running out… so I decided to get a 90ml bottle… Wow friends, I sprayed it in the morning and what a beautiful perfume, it’s a super intense cherry; I won’t say natural, of course not, it smells somewhat synthetic and a bit like a candy cherry, but it comes accompanied by a vanilla so, so creamy and beautiful (I couldn’t expect less from a Madagascar vanilla), that it really blew my mind and made me NOT regret my impulse buy. Definitely one of the BO flankers, one of the most original and beautiful; the cherry with that exquisite vanilla lasts quite a while, and then comes that rich coffee with milk note this line has. Definitely a win. Get a bottle, because you know… within 3 years of launch, these flankers start to run out. BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • I refused to like a BO, they seem repetitive, although I admit they smell nice, so I didn’t want to give Over Red a chance, until one day I was bored at the airport and tried it; since then, it’s my favourite, alongside BG Burberry. BO Over Red has that scent you don’t want to stop smelling, addictive and super sexy; I think it’s a perfume for all seasons, but yes, always nocturnal. I wish it lasted a bit more; it doesn’t have bad trail or longevity, but I would like to enjoy it more and have it be a little more invasive.

What a perfume! In my fledgling collection, it’s one of my top three favourites. Why? Because it’s deep and mysterious. I already have another cherry-topped perfume (which has its things), but look at this one down here. In the opening, a mystical dark cherry liquor comes out to hit you with an olfactory punch. Clearly, the Black Opium DNA is present, that is: coffee. And one might ask: Does coffee combine with cherry? Of course it does! And in what a way! Both notes seem like a couple of lovers intertwined in a continuous embrace. The longevity is interesting (even on my horrendous dry skin) and the projection is respectable too. The thing is that as time passes, a jasmine appears saying ‘hey, here I am’ and transforms into the companion of this eternal kiss of cherryed cherry and coffee. Not in vain, this great perfume is heading to become the vice-champion of women’s fragrances of 2025!

  • I ordered it because of the reviews from the Kings… it smells nice of cherry and a bit of vanilla, it doesn’t project much or leave a trail, it’s not invasive. I use it for daily wear, but the ‘femme fatale’ vibe I’d heard about doesn’t quite reach that level for me; it’s fine for day-to-day, but I won’t be restocking it, I was expecting something more.

  • I think it’s a wonderful perfume; when you smell it, you imagine a night scene, but once it dries down, you realise it also works for day, so I would reserve it for its peculiarity for special events. The description starts with that playful cherry, which I love… it smells like a party frozen lollipop but with a bit of liquor, then it’s as if they added chocolate, and finally a matcha, so it would be a cacao matcha with cherry… I feel the cherry all the time. Something happened to me, and is that in my collection I have the Nuit Tresor La Fleur by Lancome and they seem super similar, but the latter without cherry. I love it, I’d give it an 8/10.

  • CarliCherry

The longevity on my skin is insane; my pH isn’t the best, and I’ve always had issues with longevity and projection. When applied, it smells super delicious, reminding me a bit of Nuit Tresor Intense (which was discontinued in Argentina, I don’t know why). It smells like cherry, more like a marasca or a guava cherry, I LOVE IT; it’s not cloying and is super aromatic. Coffee is the second note to settle and lasts almost all day; one of the most delicious fragrances I’ve tried. You can tell the perfumers put in the work; for me, these are the ones that never fail if you buy them blind. That same day I tried TF’s Lost Cherry and it has some similarity (another delicious one if you like cherry). Anyway, a cherry perfume for CarliCherry 🍒

  • Aishalulunim

Out of the entire Opium range, this is my favourite. I adore the cherry-topped opening with a hint of acidity; it’s the best perfume with this note I’ve tried so far. 🥰 On my skin, it becomes more enveloping and dark, fitting my style perfectly. Although the pyramid lists coffee, patchouli, and vanilla, on my skin it turns very gourmand, leaving an almond accord, even if they don’t specify it. 🤷♀️ Still, I think it’s gorgeous, ideal for evening wear or winter. Given my low tolerance for gourmand scents, I doubt I’ll buy a bottle, but certainly, it’s a great perfume.

  • I was looking for something dominated by cherry, and this isn’t it, haha. I absolutely love the DNA of the line for that floral vanilla I’ve used and enjoyed so much before. I wanted to see how the cherry would come in, and honestly, it does give a bright fruity touch, though it doesn’t last long before reverting to the classic DNA. Obviously, I expected more cherry, but those were just my high expectations, haha; nevertheless, I enjoyed the full decant. Fresh, acidic, and bright opening, I liked the change, but in the end, we’re left with the same old DNA.
