Descripción
Rosendo Mateu Nº 1 Bergamot, Tea Leaf, Sandalwood by Rosendo Mateu Olfactive Expressions is an aromatic woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2017, the nose behind this creation is Rosendo Mateu. The top notes unfold with Calabrian bergamot, lime, lavender, green mandarin, sage, rosemary, and thyme; the heart reveals tea leaf, bitter orange blossom, neroli, jasmine, lily of the valley, green pepper, and cardamom; while the base notes settle with white musk, sandalwood, and iris.

This perfume has just arrived. It was a blind buy guided by the good comments read these past few days. The opening is an explosion of bergamot, green mandarin, and excellent-quality lemon, almost astringent. After a few minutes, it leans towards the floral, with orange blossom and jasmine appearing, maintaining a bitter tone but with magnificent finesse and elegance. This phase lasts about 3-4 hours without practically decaying in intensity; it’s a perfume with correct longevity, although it’s not projective (in line with its summer and fresh philosophy), as it stays at skin level for a long time. However, I notice it makes perceptible bursts throughout practically its entire life, about 6-7 hours, a real achievement for this type of fresh fragrance. The dry-down is a creamy sandalwood that stays at skin level, where the citrus and neroli disappear completely. In summary: a summer perfume, 100% unisex, refreshing, away from mass-produced citrus, original, and with quality ingredients. A great creation by a great master. Totally recommended. My rating: 9/10.
It’s a perfume different from what current Mediterranean fragrances have us accustomed to. It’s complex in notes, but the result is soft, long-lasting, and with a sweet touch. The opening is fresh with natural, ethereal, and volatile citrus that quickly pass into a pleasant aroma, leaning towards a sweet orange blossom combined with iris, which harmonises with a medicinal touch of rosemary and thyme. Everything is very Mediterranean and luminous. I notice the sandalwood on my skin very softly, almost imperceptible, but it’s there. Totally unisex for daytime people who want to smell of nature. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s a craft perfume with excellent quality. A very well-made niche fragrance by the veteran Rosendo Mateu. By the way, women like it a lot; they say it’s a special aroma. A wonderful woody citrus creation with an elegant bottle design.
When I tried it in the perfumerie, I thought: ‘I’ve heard this before’. I can’t recall when, where or what, but the scent felt so familiar it triggered a memory in my mind. It didn’t smell like ‘Rosendo Mateu 1’ before, but it left me intrigued, trying to remember. Imaginatively, it evokes lush, verdant nature, with waterfalls, like a forest on a Pacific island under a blue sky and radiant sun. It’s a pleasant aroma, though very soapy (which isn’t bad). It gives a refreshing sensation, nothing stinging or shrill, with an image of cleanliness. The downside is it lasts very little: about two hours, then it becomes soft and neutral, close to the skin, making it hard to justify the price. It lasts the same on a blotter.
After testing it in the perfumerie, I thought: ‘I’ve heard this before!’. I don’t know when, where, or what, but the smell felt so familiar that it triggered an immediate memory. Curiously, I had never smelled ‘Rosendo Mateu 1’ before. It left me intrigued, trying to remember… But my feelings about the fragrance are clear: it evokes lush green nature, with cascades of water. I imagine the forest of a Pacific island under a blue sky and a radiant sun. It’s a pleasant aroma, although to me it seems very soapy (and that’s not bad). It offers freshness without being sharp or strident, conveying tidiness. The only flaw is that it lasts very little: basically about two hours. After that, it becomes very soft and neutral at skin level, which makes justifying its price difficult. On cardboard, its longevity is similar.
After a long time away from it, I had the chance to smell it a few days ago. Common aroma, nothing exclusive. It reminded me of the classic Mugler Cologne. Sillage is practically non-existent. The first two hours are about half a metre away, then it drops to skin-level from that second hour onwards. Longevity is moderate. After the sixth hour, you can’t find it on your skin anymore. For the type of fragrance it is, and given how little it lasts and projects, I don’t see justification for its high price. Totally dispensable, with many better options on the market in its style at a quarter of the price.
For me, it’s a fresh, clean, unisex perfume that evolves in a fairly linear way, showing a balanced blend of citrus and green tea. On my skin, the floral aspect barely stands out, although there is a white musk base. I see it as perfect for work environments where we want to convey cleanliness and serenity, as, at least for me, it smells relaxing. Unfortunately, although its trail is soft but present and suitable for those places, its longevity on my skin is short, about five hours. Review based on a decant courtesy of @Mithrandir. Scent 6.5/10, Longevity 5/10, Sillage 6/10, Value for money 4/10, Versatility 7.5/10, Packaging 7.5/10. Would I buy it again? I didn’t buy it.

A very pleasant fragrance for wearing; clean, citrusy, and aromatic. It has a vibrant citrus opening. You can sense the green aspect, but it’s a fresh green. As it dries down, it shifts towards a soapy, floral point, with very relaxing white flowers. It is very well balanced and has curious notes, such as green pepper, which I detect quite early and throw me off balance. It’s an interesting option for spring and the office; that’s its moment. It can also be worn in summer. It doesn’t project much and the performance is just average. I like it for its different kind of cleanliness, but I wouldn’t buy it.

The perfume is lovely. It caresses you, sings a lullaby while you’re lounging on a deckchair on a fresh summer morning, and then, once you’ve finally fallen asleep, it lets out a fart in your face. Don’t misunderstand the metaphor: it has one of the best openings I’ve tried, but this house has a habit of using a floral musk that, depending on the day, really turns my stomach. It has good longevity, but not because of the citrus notes, rather on the floral side.
On my skin, this is one of the longest-lasting citrus fragrances I own. While the projection lasts only about the first half-hour, it clings to my skin for several hours with a very pleasant, high-quality freshness. I highlight a sharp, realistic citrus opening, a very green dry-down (especially the tea note), and a clean, agreeable base that sticks to the skin for quite a while, likely due to the musk and iris. It’s not super original, but it features natural, realistic ingredients; it’s very balanced and rounded. A unisex option perfect for spring and, above all, summer; elegant for a citrus scent. Alongside Cedro di Diamante, Renaissance, and Tornino 21, these are my favourites for the heat.
