Smyrna… every time I put it on, I wonder how long it took me to decide. It’s a magnificent, imposing, forceful, and vigorous rose. Beautiful, of that mature and serene kind of beauty that needs no artifice or fuss and radiates an innate elegance. I’ve spent my whole life running from rose perfumes like the plague, but lately I’ve been nothing but chasing this note. In Smyrna, the rose takes centre stage but with personality and presence. It blends exquisitely with dry, spicy woody notes thanks to the pepper, which doesn’t go unnoticed and acts as a flawless supporting actor that elevates the protagonist to another level. It has a refinement and niche-level exquisiteness. It reminds me a bit of Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone, but this is warmer, cozier, and sweeter; Smyrna would be the cool, reserved sister, with a distant yet captivating character. Unfortunately, longevity isn’t its strong suit and I have to reapply, though that’s my drama with all perfumes and I allow Smyrna its fleeting nature.
I haven’t had the pleasure of trying it yet, but I picked it up for €17 for 100ml, when it normally goes for around €50, so I’m going to give it a chance and see how it goes.
A powerful, refined, and dense rose aroma, absolutely delicious. Imagine standing in a rose garden at dawn in spring, with a gentle breeze, you on a bench with your eyes half-closed as the day breaks; the air fills with the scent of the flowers. You have nothing to do but pass the time enjoying the moment, daydreaming. If you like roses, it’s very interesting.
Smells like an intense fuchsia rose, bathed in black pepper and a hint of cardamom, all sitting on a woody base that gives it weight without weighing it down. It’s fairly linear, though the pepper gains ground until it dominates the dry-down. Projects well at first but quickly fades to a skin scent that lasts around six hours. I’m not usually a fan of roses, but this one has caught me: it’s a mature, characterful fragrance that isn’t vintage, and I don’t think it offends anyone. I see it as a versatile unisex option for all seasons. Highly recommend to rose lovers. Pleasant: 7/10 Interesting: 5/10 Versatile: 10/10 Original: 6/10
