Warm, sweet, and friendly, but with a touch of coffee… and lots of coffee, and even more coffee ;(
An edition dedicated to coffee and consecrated to its Arabica note, yet it comes across as merely a statement of intent. At first, the coffee note is noticeable… it’s very real and defined, yet also faint and fleeting. In the base, the original A*Men shines through, emerging clearer and more perceptible than in other ‘Pure’ scents. The second issue with the coffee note, apart from its lightness, is that it sheds an accord whose ‘colour’ blends and fades very quickly into the sea of patchouli, vanilla, and caramel in the original A*Men, meaning it perhaps isn’t well-positioned to stand out in this setting. In the end, as the saying goes: much noise (or beans) and few nuts.
It’s coffee turned into perfume, and more coffee. I’m not sure if I’d really want to wear it every day; I prefer Pure Wood.
What a delight! Smells like rich, warm coffee with good projection and trail. I tried it alongside Malt and Havanne, and honestly, this was my favourite, even though it’s the darkest; Malt is very fruity and fresh, while Havanne is rich and different, but its base notes didn’t quite convince me.
I passed by the MUGLER stand and they had the entire A*MEN men’s collection. I tried Pure Tonka and Pure Coffee. Pure Tonka is pure sweet, creamy, and dense coffee. Pure Coffee is a warm, very elegant woody scent: it smells of patchouli and musk with a bit of coffee; on my skin, this note is not dominant, it is more subtle than in Pure Tonka. I find it more elegant and versatile. The projection is average and the longevity is very good. A very pleasant fragrance.
From the ‘Pure’ series by Thierry Mugler (La Havane, La Malt, and Coffee), this is the one where I have best perceived and isolated the central note. Here, the coffee is indeed noticeable (unlike the others where tobacco and malt get confused with more potent notes). As coffee has an invasive aroma used in perfume stands to rest the nose, it is logical that it is felt with all its force here. The opening is intense with the coffee and the classic patchouli of the A*Men series, reminding of its link to the mother fragrance. I managed only a moderate trail. At four hours, I sense cedar, musk, some vetiver, and residual patchouli. The trail is moderate to weak at eight hours, with some patchouli and cedar. At twelve hours: skin scent, residual musk. It is one of the most straightforward and honest coffee notes, quite perceptible in the first three or four hours. The trail, being generous, was always moderate, lasting over 12 hours but the last hours were skin scent. For me, it is clearly a winter fragrance and for those who enjoy ‘oriental gourmand’ scents.
I cannot give it a resounding ‘I don’t like it’, despite the fact that I wouldn’t buy it. The coffee note is good and performs well, but the rest of the notes create a difficult-to-describe effect that doesn’t quite please me.
A*Men Pure Coffee is a very good oriental fragrance and faithful to the style of Mugler’s A*Men. From the first application, the coffee is noticeable, very realistic and close to the scent of roasted beans. For an hour or more, the coffee with patchouli persists, then the woods appear alongside a combination that Mugler uses in several A*Men, such as vanilla or tonka, which adds creaminess. Like other flankers, it is for evening or winter use; in summer or heat, it could be overwhelming. Longevity is over 10 hours with good initial projection. Pros: the opening coffee notes are very good. Cons: the common drying down of other Mugler men’s fragrances.
On the skin, it is a very pleasant coffee scent with a rich sweetening combined with patchouli; it gives good vibes and puts you in a good mood. It is the perfect combination of all elements. At first, it smells like sweet and warm coffee, lasting about 15 to 30 minutes, then the ingredients settle and it becomes a super pleasant, indulgent, and tasty scent that makes you want to keep smelling it. The musk is very effective and makes it last for many hours. I sprayed two sprays on my abdomen at 10 am; by night, waves of its invigorating scent were still reaching me. I showered at 11 pm and could still smell it; upon waking in the morning, it was still there, fainter until the afternoon, where only a sweet and pleasant scent peeked through. The t-shirt remained impregnated for several days. I recommend it 100% for spring, autumn, and winter; in summer it could be strong except on cool nights. Excellent longevity and moderate trail.
Of all the Mugler flankers, this is the one that reminds me most of B*Men: something roasted and sweet, but it doesn’t smell like coffee; rather, it smells like the licorice of B*Men. Its behaviour is almost linear until the end. In 2010, there was another version where patchouli dominated, reminding more of A*Men with a slightly sweetened roasted coffee. This new version is creamier and less aggressive, perhaps easier to wear and less loud. The final phase remains sweet, but it is there where the woody side desired at the beginning becomes noticeable, which would make it a fabulous fragrance. In summary: a correct fragrance, formal, nocturnal, with moderate trail and good longevity in autumn and winter, exceeding the average.
Very good fragrance; it shares the long fixation of Pure Tonka, Pure Malt, and the classic A*Men. The only thing that might disappoint is that, while it is faithful to the name ‘Pure Coffee’, if we are talking about coffee-smelling perfumes, Pure Tonka is much richer, a better fragrance in itself, and more complete. The differences are clear: Pure Coffee smells like coffee as if you’ve opened a bag to brew in a coffee maker, added to the patchouli base of A*Men; it resembles the classic, but here the coffee note predominates and is intense. Pure Tonka, on the other hand, is a sweet coffee with a touch of chocolate, whereas Pure Coffee is more bitter. Tonka smells like walking into a Starbucks.
Top perfume; shares that long-lasting fixative with Pure Tonka, Pure Malt, and the classic A*Men. The only thing that might disappoint is that, while it stays true to the name ‘Pure Coffee’, if we’re talking about perfumes that smell of coffee, Pure Tonka is much richer, a better perfume in itself, and more complete. The difference is clear: Pure Coffee smells like coffee as if you’ve opened a bag to brew in a coffee machine, adding the patchouli base of the classic A*Men; here the note dominates and is intense. Pure Tonka, on the other hand, is a sweet coffee with chocolate, whereas Coffee is more bitter and Tonka smells like walking into a Starbucks-style café.
Thierry Mugler has always caused a stir; people either love or hate it, but you have to admire their willingness to innovate. Pure Coffee, like many A*Men flankers, has its followers and detractors. In my opinion, they all have merit and quality; it’s up to each person to decide whether to wear them. They don’t suit everyone, but that doesn’t mean they are poorly made. Pure Coffee has everything under control: nothing spicy, nothing annoying, everything flows well. It starts fresh and spicy, then a green, earthy, aromatic, refreshing, and delicious note emerges, though it doesn’t smell like pure coffee. I’m not a purist; I prefer simple and straightforward. What I perceive is more of a mocha scent, which many people enjoy and smells like chocolate. It’s not conventional chocolate, but it leans closer to that than to coffee. As it dries down, it becomes soft, light, and sweet over a perceptible woody base. The performance is more than sufficient. I’ve liked it and hope to find it at a good price.
It smells like two things to me: a caramel coffee or simply having coffee with A*Men on. It’s gorgeous, long-lasting, and projects incredibly well. I own countless coffee scents, and this is the one that smells most like actual coffee of all.
Mugler’s A*Men Pure Coffee is like walking into a café: it opens with an intense, captivating roasted coffee, nuanced by subtle notes of dark chocolate. As it evolves, it becomes creamier and reveals the patchouli, which gives it an earthy, woody touch. In the base, cedar and vetiver add solid masculinity, while musk softens the dryness and adds creaminess to the dry down. Although it resembles the original, it is less intense, more refined, and has shorter longevity. Ideal for those seeking personality without overdoing it. It also reminds me of Kilian’s Intoxicated. It lasts between 6 and 8 hours on the skin, with moderate projection for about 2 hours before becoming subtle. Perfect for everyday wear, work, meetings, or outings, especially in autumn and winter, day or night.
A*Men Pure Coffee is like stepping into a coffee shop: it opens with intense roasted coffee and dark chocolate, then turns creamy with that earthy, woody patchouli that gives it character. The cedar and vetiver add masculinity, while the musk softens everything for a gentle finish. It’s less intense than the original, more refined but with shorter longevity, ideal for those seeking personality without being overwhelming. It bears a strong resemblance to Kilian’s Intoxicated. Longevity is 6 to 8 hours, with moderate projection that fades after two hours. Perfect for daily wear, work, dates, or evening events, especially in autumn and winter.
