The opening of Jo Malone’s Myrrh & Lavender recalls Armani Eau pour Homme, YSL L’Homme La Nuit Eau de Parfum, or Boucheron Pour Homme: citrusy, herbal, with a pristine, very organic lavender. It’s marvellous and powerful, flooding not just a room but the whole house. Gradually, that brash hesperidic opening recedes to give way to a very cool floral and spiced heart; you can already tell the myrrh is pushing from the depths. As it dries, cold, almost mentholated spices emerge. The dry-down is a cool balsamic finish, like Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense. In the end, the projection isn’t as strong, but it’s noticeable on the wearer, in a hug or a handshake. If it’s hot or your body heats up, the fragrance revives in bursts. It lasts about 6 to 8 hours, with the last 4 hours clinging to the skin. The promise of power in the opening fades quickly, but the pleasure of the first 4 hours is worth it. Ideal for daytime, in the morning after a rich bath and hydrated skin; applying generously isn’t just allowed, it’s mandatory, and you’ll have a sensational morning. Of a classic cut, I see it as ideal for men aged 25 and over, well-dressed, not aiming for elegance per se, but demanding a well-ironed shirt and polished shoes. If you can find it at a reasonable price, a maximum of $130, then it’s certainly worth it.

The opening of Jo Malone’s Myrrh & Lavender is a beast: it recalls Armani Eau pour Homme, YSL L’Homme La Nuit Eau de Parfum, or Boucheron Pour Homme, with potent citrus and herbs that flood the whole house. Then that brash hesperidic opening recedes to reveal a floral and spiced heart where the myrrh starts to work. As it dries, you get cold, almost mentholated spice notes, with a cool balsamic finish like Prada Amber Intense. The projection drops, but you can smell it on yourself or when someone shakes your hand; with heat, it revives in bursts. It lasts 6-8 hours, with the last 4 hours sticking to the skin. The initial promise of power fades quickly, but the first 4 hours are a treat well worth it. Ideal for daytime after a good bath and hydrated skin: apply generously, it’s allowed and obligatory, and you’ll have a sensational morning. It’s a bit classic, for men aged 25+ who are well-dressed, with an ironed shirt and polished shoes. If you catch it at a good price, a maximum of $130, it’s certainly worth it.

  • Looking for a gentleman’s scent? You’ve found it. It smells like a white gentleman freshly out of the bath with a sharp beard, courtesy of Roger & Gallet Lavender. It’s the type who wears cashmere and wool, nothing but. He wears bespoke shoes, rides horses, and you’d kill for his handkerchief. Very elegant, with a touch of sexiness. If you like what I’ve just said, then yes. I want to use it, but I’ll have to add some floral or fruity notes. I’m planning to combine it with Guerlain’s Nerolia Vetiver from the Aqua Allegoria line. Let’s see what happens.

  • Looking for a gentleman’s scent? Stop searching. Roger & Gallet Lavender smells like a freshly bathed and shaved white gentleman. It’s the type who wears cashmere and wool, never polyester. He wears bespoke shoes, rides horses, and you’d kill for his handkerchief. Very elegant, with a touch of sexiness. If you like what I’ve just said, then it’s for you. I want to use it, but I’ll have to add some floral or fruity notes. I’m planning to pair it with Guerlain’s Nerolia Vetiver from the Aqua Allegoria line. Let’s see what happens.
