Delicious and adaptable for daily wear, nothing like its ‘avant-garde’ name suggests. It’s a youthful, sweet, and warm scent that reminds me of CH Men or Emporio Diamonds. It’s a sweet woody and spicy fragrance, soft and very versatile.
One of the greats in my collection for evening wear, alongside Encre Noire or Passion Man. It’s one of those perfumes I can’t deconstruct; the notes are so well-blended that I don’t know which one dominates. I feel that female perfumers have a better nose for mixing spices. The Indian nose behind this Avant Garde gives it a touch of her homeland, fantastic. I don’t know which spice prevails, but it’s impossible to criticise. It’s for evening, formal or informal (chinos and a jumper, not Adidas). 9/10.
Bestial perfume from Lanvin. It doesn’t project much, but the trail is exquisite and lasts quite a while. At first, I barely noticed it and had to apply a lot, but with use, it becomes more noticeable and lasts for hours. I wore it today after months of not using it, and although I didn’t leave the house, it still lingers and I love it. It’s beeswax, honey-like, and tobacco. You can detect resin and pepper, but it doesn’t smell of vetiver, lavender, or bergamot. It’s available at a good price and surpasses many more expensive alternatives. Recommended.
A total delight, reminiscent of ‘La Nuit de l’Homme’ but with a smoky tobacco twist that makes it even more interesting, according to my friends. The longevity is brutal, lasting over 12 hours on my skin, with a trail of a metre and a half that persists for about 8 hours. Take off its hat, it competes with luxury perfumes and costs only €20. Don’t hesitate to grab it in Spain; the 100ml bottle is incredible.
I bought this perfume recently due to the good recommendations I read about it and I must say it has a similarity in the opening to ‘YSL La Nuit de l’Homme’. But when I tried YSL in the perfumerie, it didn’t quite please me, just a little. Now that I have it, I have to say that on my skin it is very sweet and it reaches my nose, giving me a bit of a headache when applying it. I think with just one or two sprays I am more than served until my nose gets used to it and I can apply more. In conclusion… Good aroma, good presentation, and if you want a perfume similar to La Nuit, this is yours without a doubt 🙂
To begin with, I apologise to the rest of the forum; I believe there are ways to write with education even for a review. I am totally in disagreement with Mr NachoGhez, who I believe has not the faintest idea of what he is writing… intrusive and repulsive spicebomb? disgust? sh*t Avant Garde? Sincerely, I don’t know where he bought his perfumes. I believe reviews serve to interpret another person’s perception and compare it with ours. Well, I give a thumbs up to this fragrance; its sweet and woody notes are not cloying. It is a formal perfume, spices like nutmeg stand out, and something more in the background that I don’t quite perceive. What I would criticise a little is the lavender, which I note as synthetic but in small proportions. Good trail and projection, and above all excellent price-quality ratio. Although there are better ones and this presents nothing new or novel, it is highly recommended.
I love it. As many say, it resembles La Nuit de l’Homme, but I must say it only resembles it in the opening; afterwards, it takes on its own personality and is very distinguished and more smoky or tobacco-like. I categorise it as a good perfume due to its good composition, very rich. Ideal for the night or late afternoons. Do not be confused by its opening similar to YSL La Nuit de l’Homme; this is very different.
A good fragrance that you can find at a good price in Chile at least. I sense the sweet honey note, but in the background, reinforcing woody and spicy notes. On my skin, it has a medium trail and longevity (4-6 hours). I find an opening similar to La Nuit de YSL.
Its opening reminds me of Man in Black by Bvlgari, as does its heart. Both are noble fragrances, of ancient lineage, with body, wood, and the texture of an English lord’s and Venetian nobleman’s library. Liquorice, tobacco, leather, guaiac woods, benzoin, and the sweetness of tonka bean, patchouli, and honey. In the heart, Man in Black has more potency, but in the dry-down, Avant Garde remains much more present and beautiful. Adding similarities, I remember Black Soul Imperial by Ted Lapidus. The opening of this differs greatly from the other two. I can even add that the opening of Black Soul has a note I dislike, a herbaceous and bitter note that clashes. As they develop, the three fragrances begin to have similar notes. It is in the dry-down where Avant Garde develops all its splendour against the other two. Durability is also greater and its current price is quite affordable (at least in Spain), although it is not very common on websites and is absent in perfumeries. AROMA: 8, TRAIL: 7, LONGEVITY: 8, PERFORMANCE: 8.
Its opening recalls Man in Black by Bvlgari, and so does its dry-down. Both are aristocratic fragrances, of noble vintage, with body, wood, and the texture of an English lord’s library. Alcoholic aromas, tobacco, leather, gaia wood and benzoin, and the sweetness of tonka bean, patchouli, and honey. Man in Black has more potency at the start, but in the dry-down, Avant Garde remains more present and beautiful. I also recall Black Soul Imperial, although its opening has a bitter herbal note that I don’t like. As they develop, the three are similar, but in the dry-down, Avant Garde shines brighter. High durability and performance, affordable price in Spain, although it’s not common on websites or in perfumeries. Scent: 8, Trail: 7, Longevity: 8, Performance: 8.
Woody and sweet, a beautiful combination, although sophisticated and subtle at the same time. Pink pepper, nutmeg, and benzoin are its predominant notes. I love Avant Garde!
A linear fragrance from start to finish. The notes I felt most were beeswax, tobacco, and benzoin, giving a vanilla tobacco aroma with a liquor-like sensation, as if it had brandy. It reminded me of Burberry London but more like Tobacco Vanille. Perhaps I’m not far off with those similarities, as all three are oriental, although I also sensed spice in this Lanvin one. Although it smells good, it’s not perfect and has downsides: with 10 or 12 sprays I barely manage a low or skin-sitting trail, with slight fluctuations. I don’t complain about longevity; with those sprays it lasted up to 12 hours. Everything that is born must die; this is not eternal. It was born when fresh aquatic notes were already in fashion and didn’t fit that trend. Moreover, its low trail finished it off. It was the last man standing in the coffin. Apparently, it was discontinued, but it hasn’t been lost much, as it can be replaced with something similar and better performance, like the TB by Tom Ford or the cheap clones that abound. A formal fragrance for cool or cold climates! If you find it, try it, but if you order it online, don’t pay more than 20 or 30 dollars.
I tried it on the pass… A sweet tobacco blend with balsamic notes. It has an addictive charisma. Resins, intense tobacco, and sweet liquorice notes. Soft, elegant, and nocturnal.
It is a very fine and pleasant aroma, sweet and balsamic. Beeswax predominates, much sweeter than Donna Karán’s, followed by benzoin, peppercorns, and tobacco, with touches of cardamom and lavender. It’s a different, beautiful, and elegant perfume. I bought it for my boyfriend and it smells wonderful on my skin. I only have two complaints: the longevity is very poor and the trail is low. Furthermore, unfortunately, it is discontinued, I don’t know why, although you can find it if you look a little.
They should put a warning on the box: ‘Extremely Addictive’. It’s an exquisite blend of honey and tobacco, pleasing to both you and those who get close to you. Very versatile, elegant for evening or with a t-shirt during the day. It never clashes; it’s discreet and pleasant. Its only drawback is that it fades to skin-level in about 8 hours. I recommend wearing it on cooler days to improve the trail.
In my opinion, they should put a warning on the box: ‘Extremely Addictive’. This is exactly what this perfume is; an exquisite blend of honey and tobacco that enchants both the wearer and those who get close. I find it super versatile, elegant for going out at night and perfect with a t-shirt or polo shirt during the day. It never clashes, it’s discreet and pleasant. A total hit. Its only drawback: it sits close to the skin for about eight hours. I recommend wearing it on cool, breezy days to improve its trail.
Avant Garde by Lanvin is woody, balsamic, warm and sweet. The opening is pleasant, sweet but not cloying, very spiced and a bit floral, with perceptible lavender. The most outstanding notes are the tobacco, the honey and the benzoin. The latter together with the woody accord are notable in the dry down, with similarity to Body Kouros. Being sweet, its ideal use is autumn and winter, although on fresh spring days it also works. Its handling of spices and woods gives it a sensual appeal that pleases both men and women. The projection is low but it lasts a long time on the skin, more than 12 hours in my case. Another attraction is its relatively low price. I would recommend it to those who know and enjoy fragrances like Body Kouros, Pure Havane or Michael Kors for Men.
Avant Garde is undoubtedly a good fragrance: some compare it to La Nuit de YSL and give it an air of JPG Le Male, which by the way smells better and is more economical. It is a well-made work, but it sins of being a rehash, re-chewed and re-created; it is a scent nothing new but pleasant. If you already have La Nuit or JPG, you will be getting the same thing. Aroma: 7.5. Projection: moderate-low. Longevity: 6 to 7 hours. For its price I consider it recommended.
Lanvin’s Avant Garde is woody, balsamic, warm, and sweet. The opening is pleasant, sweet without being cloying, very spicy with a hint of floral, where lavender stands out, although the star notes are tobacco, honey, and benzoin. The latter, with its woody accord, is notable in the dry-down, bearing a resemblance to Body Kouros. Being sweet, it’s ideal for autumn and winter, although it also works well in fresh spring. Its handling of spices and woods gives it a sensual appeal that pleases both men and women. Projection is low but it lasts over 12 hours on my skin. Another hit is its low price. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Body Kouros, Pure Havane, or Michael Kors for Men.
What a lovely fragrance! It just arrived and I never thought I would like it so much. I am terrible at detecting notes, I prefer to talk about experience. It smells sweet, dark and very easy to accept. It is a 10/10. We will see its performance later.
Winter is approaching and it is time for gourmand scents. Avant Garde enters with a powdery, resinous and sweet balsamic atmosphere that is very pleasant. Then it becomes warm and smoky from the tobacco, leaving a comforting trail thanks to the honey, of very good quality. The notes of cardamom, lavender and nutmeg give that non-cloying sweetness, similar to Baileys cream. Its development is slow, it does not evaporate quickly; you enjoy it in kisses, rhythmic, ideal for cold climates. It has better performance than many expensive gourmands that do not deliver. Ideal for winter family gatherings, with hugs and close chats, where trust is bridged. If you can get it, buy it, it is worth every penny. It is timeless, it has no age, apply enough so that the magic happens. Avant Garde lives up to its name: a well-crafted fragrance, not trendy nor synthetic, timeless and avant-garde. The sober bottle, matte black, serious like a cultured person, but with a transparent line reflecting the liquid, demonstrating that we must always leave a pure line for our feelings.
Sweet, without the diabetic comma; I would say it is softer than La Nuit de L’Homme, which in my opinion is spicier. The sensation is good: sweet, balsamic and lactonic. The tobacco is pipe tobacco, not leaves, blended with essences. It is long-lasting, it does not project like a bomb with four sprays. It feels heavy on the nose. Drawbacks: it is not that original, I receive the same adjectives from others who are not in the same league, so I see it as a ‘generic oriental’. Furthermore, the bottle is not sealed well and it leaks; better to use it before it runs out. Unfortunately it is discontinued, so either you pay a fortune or look for substitutes: La Nuit de L’Homme and Poker Face are good options, even you could layer them.
Spectacular, seductive and high-quality aroma, ideal for spring or autumn evenings. The longevity and projection are moderate. It is discontinued but still obtainable.
It smells very similar to Mandarina Duck Pure Black.
Oh my goodness, what a delight, ta ta ta cosmic barrel, from which planet did you come… 11/10.
I don’t know how to explain it, it smells lovely, but it doesn’t last even a minute. I adore Avant Garde, but it is very weak.
I’m returning in 2026 just to confirm that this gem is no longer being produced; it is one of my favourites and I would fill up bottles again if only it were possible.
