As I mentioned, I didn’t like the house Alexandre at all at first. Even samples I received as gifts had to be passed on. Generally, they have a resemblance to Montale: extremely potent and bordering on synthetic. Among the gifts came this Mandarine Sultane; it was the one I liked most, even more than the 100ml version. It opens with an explosion of tangerine and citrus, with a strong powdery accord. After five minutes, the tangerine attenuates but never disappears, only fading slowly. That powdery accord almost vanishes in minutes, giving way to floral tones. I detect neroli and strong orange blossom, but luckily no jasmine, which can sometimes steal the show. The woods, amber, and musky tones push in the base, blending with the heart which remains tangerine, persisting but fading. It’s the first saffron perfume that doesn’t overwhelm me; it seems friendly and pretty. The dry-down is my favourite part, completely unisex, whereas the initial stages are somewhat more feminine. The longevity is good, lasting 7-8 hours on my skin, with moderate projection for the first three. I like it; perfect for spring and autumn, perhaps too heavy for summer and too bright for winter. The tangerine of a sultan.
What a disappointment. I bought it because of such pleasant and positive reviews, and although its opening is citrusy and the tangerine makes an impact for the first five minutes, it then fades away. To be honest, it develops a smell of ‘powdery soap’, quite literally. On my skin, it comes across as strong, almost like detergent; an undeniable clean scent, but so literal that I don’t want it on my skin. Even though it’s unisex, it suits the male gender better; my son enjoys it and loves that laundry-fresh scent, but for me, it’s a fragrance I won’t use again. I suppose it’s my skin that played a trick on me, but it has disappointed me immensely.
A brilliant citrus scent for those who hate lemon; the tangerine refreshes and sweetens without being sharp before moving into florals. A rich, daytime fragrance, nothing intrusive for the office. I don’t feel it’s suitable for evening or formal wear, though it could look perfect on a summer night. To each their own, of course. Unisex? Perhaps, but it leans heavily feminine. The longevity is mediocre to low, lasting around four hours on my skin.
I bought it blindly from Brasty, which is reliable, so I don’t think it’s counterfeit. The only explanation for its poor longevity is that it hasn’t macerated yet, though I’m not sure; I just feel like the odd one out compared to the wonderful reviews I read before purchasing on Fragrantica. It smells delicious, but it doesn’t last at all, fading in about 15 minutes like a weak body mist. Every skin is different, but there are perfumes in ‘beast mode’ that last on everyone, so it might be my skin or just a lack of ‘punch’ in the fragrance. I’d like to describe the phases and base, but I can’t detect them. I only notice a sweet tangerine that dies out immediately. I’m not selling it because I collect bottles and this is the prettiest one I have, but the contents are a great disappointment.
It’s a truly lovely perfume; I recommend it wholeheartedly.
