The Majestic Oud by Alexandre.J is an oriental woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2020, this olfactory composition was created by perfumer Emna Doghri. In its opening, the fragrance unfolds an explosion of red fruits and citrus, featuring apple, blackcurrant, raspberry, bergamot, lemon and melon, imparting a fresh and vibrant character. The heart of the fragrance reveals an earthy elegance thanks to patchouli and sage, which act as a bridge to a warm and exotic base. A smoked raspberry… I tried it yesterday at the Selfridges, the only place where I find fragrances from this house. Do I like it? I’ve gone through several stages… The black bottle caught my attention from afar. Freshly applied, it’s a toxic cloud of alcohol that saturates and overwhelms the ingredients; you can’t distinguish anything. After those seconds, the raspberry, amber and oud come in; the whole evolution is that combo. Subtle nuances of musk appear. It doesn’t have an abyssal trail (thank goodness) so as not to be annoying, but it lasts a long time. I applied it at 5 pm and by 12 the next day, if I bring my nose close, it still smells very subtly. For me, Golden Oud remains the best of the house, but it depends on taste. It’s unisex, although the raspberry might seem more feminine to some men. Is it worth spending €125? It’s up to each person, but I don’t recommend buying it blind.
The house describes this fragrance by a French artist thus: ‘with the advent of jazz, cabarets were the most popular places… The Majestic Oud recalls those casual and sensual nights, dyed with a fruity patchouli wrapped in a sumptuous oud’. The top notes are five fruits that aren’t very distinct (bergamot, lemon, cassis, raspberry, apple and melon); in the heart there is patchouli and sage (more perceptible) and in the base musk, amber and oud. It has an oriental and retro air. It’s very smoky, like the smell after being in a place with lots of smoke. From this collection I prefer ‘The Majestic Vetiver’.
The presentation is gorgeous: a gold box with matching lettering, inside another black box, and the perfume sits on a ‘bed’ of gold silk; the bottle is very pretty. Upon application, the first splash was pure smoke and I was frightened having bought it blind, but then it develops pleasantly. I feel a ‘smoky’ creaminess from the oud, raspberry and smoked melon. I’d give it a 6/10. For the price, I expected better longevity and projection; on me it lasts about three hours and I don’t feel it projects much. I use it in winter, I think the oud is for this climate.
Bought it on impulse and fell in love with the bottle and box design, though with so few reviews I wasn’t sure what to expect. The fragrance is rich, with liquorish, woody and smoky notes, without any fruit coming through. The problem is that on my skin it doesn’t last at all and has no projection; it’s strong but leaves no trail. I was disappointed by the longevity and sillage, but I like the scent a lot and it’s different from anything I’ve tried; I see it more as a winter scent, although it could be worn on warm days without being intrusive.
