  • Mysore Sandal: according to the internet, this is Christopher Sheldrake’s favourite, but whether it is or not, it is undoubtedly one of the finest oriental woody scents I’ve tried. The Indian sandalwood forms the base of this complex cocktail; the spices and benzoin give a twist to the primary scent. It’s a hard, intense aroma that, over time, lets the benzoin and spices take over. It’s a complex, sexy fragrance with real staying power. It’s for the determined and those seeking pure elegance. If you’re an olfactory sibarite, you’ll love it. If you prefer less intense florals or cypresses, you’ll find it hard to understand. The longevity is immense, lasting over 24 hours with a trail that stretches beyond a metre. It never goes unnoticed, be it praised or criticised. It’s an EDP that gives much to discuss. 8/10.

  • An explosion of spices with cumin at full throttle, whisking you straight to India. Amidst the heat, a hint of sweetness, perhaps from benzoin, filters through, and finally, the sandalwood rounds it all off. Be warned: I’m not sure if this is Christopher Sheldrake’s favourite, but it is certainly a tough fragrance, not for everyone; perhaps the most challenging Serge Lutens I’ve tried. The projection is brutal, so apply with caution, and the longevity is eternal, especially on clothes. It’s unisex, though with all the spices, it leans more towards men, and it’s very potent. Winter only.

  • An explosion of spices with cumin turned up to maximum, transporting you straight to India. Amidst the heat, a sweet syrup-like note filters through, likely from the benzoin, while the sandalwood rounds everything off at the end. Watch out now; I’m not sure if this is Christopher Sheldrake’s favourite, but it is certainly a tough fragrance, not for everyone – perhaps the most challenging Serge Lutens I’ve tried. The projection is brutal, so apply with care, and the longevity is eternal, especially on clothes. It’s unisex, though the spicy profile suits men better, and it’s very potent. Winter only.
