A floral romance with liquor and vanilla. Douce Amère is sweet and creamy, featuring a unique hint of absinthe surrounded by delicate notes of rosemary. Challenging, isn’t it? The composition seems so, yet it is so well orchestrated that it achieves a pleasing balance, where the florals flirt with a suggestive sweetness. The creaminess of the tiaré is amplified by jasmine and lily of the valley. A prominent and sensual vanilla that blends perfectly with the absinthe and cinnamon; one lends it a liqueur-like character, the other a soft, earthy touch. Rosemary adds an herbal tint behind the vanilla-floral white, making it more substantial, a subtle green note that doesn’t aim to stand out but to observe the romance without interrupting it. Seductive fragrance, with an amber dry-down, warm and floral, merging into intense and penetrating vanilla (sweet/liqueur-like). Sillage is high/moderate, excellent longevity as with most Lutens from that era. My review is about the first formula.
