  • Dominique Ropion is a genius I adore, especially for his magic with Malle: no one today handles floral chords with such mastery, from the brutal realism of Carnal Flowers to this sexy ‘New Romantic’ Fleur de Cassie. It may seem confusing, but in 19th-century France, cassia and mimosa were often blended, and here Ropion preserves that historical ambiguity: the bouquet queen is the Australian mimosa, the one Mérimée described when speaking of Carmen. The scent is potent, bright and warm like winter sunshine, golden and sensual like Carmen’s lips. It retains all its facets: honeyed and powdery, with hints of rose, jasmine and the sting of carnation, all finished by the cassia absolute filtering in shyly, like a forbidden love. The dry-down is woody, with a soft sandalwood that turns animal and leathery to dramatise that free, passionate Carmen, unbound. It is a fragrance that contracts in search of freedom, avant-garde and unique, drawn from the opulence of the past but delivering an innovative result. Longevity is excellent, projection moderate but appropriate, with first-class essences. Worn like a haute couture suit: compact, studied, glamorous without being pretentious, refined elegance. Even though I don’t usually like florals, one must yield to works of art as powerful as this. Rating: 9.7

  • Dominique Ropion is a genius I adore; no one today handles floral chords with his mastery, from his brutal Carnal Flowers to this sexy ‘New Romantic’ Fleur de Cassie. It sounds confusing, but in 19th-century France cassia and mimosa were often confused, so here he maintains that classic ambiguity where the yellow, fragrant mimosa reigns, the one Mérimée described in Carmen. The scent of this mimosa is potent, bright and warm like winter sunshine, golden and sensual like Carmen’s lips. Ropion preserves its facets: honeyed and powdery, with touches of rose, jasmine and a spicy carnation, all topped by the cassia absolute filtering shyly like a forbidden love. The dry-down is woody with soft sandalwood that becomes animal and leathery to dramatise that free, passionate Carmen. It is a scent that contracts in search of freedom, transgressive, unique, rooted in the past yet delivering an avant-garde result. Longevity is very good, projection just right, with quality essences. Worn like a haute couture suit, a studied and glamorous ensemble without being pretentious, refined elegance. Even though I don’t usually like florals, one must yield to works of art as powerful as this. Rating: 9.7

  • Not a fan. I ordered a sample and the floral blend, with that carnation and mimosa, smells like sweat or drunkenness and is very powdery. No thanks. I’d give it a 4.
