Reading Spartacus’s review of Bal à Versailles instantly reminded me of Légende, especially the bottle which seems inspired by Michael Jackson’s. Although the scent is similar to Bal à Versailles, I’m not familiar with it. This men’s fragrance was launched in 1989 alongside its feminine counterpart, Mystique. There’s a video advertisement on YouTube. I’ve seen several editions featuring holographic images of MJ. It’s a limited edition made in Switzerland by Beat Perfumes, and coincidentally, I already own one. The aroma is a very aggressive masculine chypre, packed with leather, patchouli, castoreum, oakmoss, and animalic notes. It’s quintessentially 80s—very dirty and sexual, saturated with notes that would surely not be allowed today under IFRA regulations. It approaches what some might call ‘grandma perfume’, but to me, it feels very masculine, reminiscent of Kouros, Antaeus, or Balenciaga. The sillage is radioactive and the longevity is endless. I haven’t tested it properly yet as it’s been very hot, and if I wore it now, people would probably complain. I’ll wait to try it properly in autumn-winter, but as a fan of this style, my first impressions couldn’t be better.
