  • ADELE CASAGRANDE (1897-1978) opened a small shop in 1918 selling leather goods, following Italian tradition. In 1925 she married EDOARDO FENDI and the business became FENDI. The shop specialised in luxury and glamour, particularly leather. In 1965 they appointed KARL LAGERFELD as creative director and the brand gained international projection. A milestone was the launch of the BAGUETTE handbag in 1997, created by granddaughter SILVIA VENTURINI FENDI, which became an icon thanks to its appearance in the series ‘SEX AND THE CITY’ in 1998. Adele and Edoardo had five daughters (Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla and Alda) who never got along. After the father’s death in 1954 and the mother, Adele’s, in 1978, the brand was sold in stages to the LVMH group between 1999 and 2001. The multinational opened the PALAZZO FENDI in 2005 on Largo Goldoni (next to Via del Corso and Via dei Condotti, Rome’s finest district), dedicating the third floor to a megafashion hotel and the second to the ultra-wealthy. In short, not much more for the rest of us. Neither Adele nor Edoardo were interested in perfumes; it was their daughters who launched them in 1985 with the first fragrance, FENDI DI FENDI, a discontinued Chypre Floral Aldehydic Eau de Parfum still available online at increasingly high prices. Subsequently, in 1988, they launched the first men’s fragrance, FENDI UOMO, a discontinued spiced woody scent also sold at a premium via digital channels. Thanks to my friend ANNA CÉ, whose excellent review of FURIOSA DI FENDI I highly recommend reading, I discovered this fragrance. FURIOSA is a powerhouse that begins ‘furiously’ with a floral sweet blast that wakes up anyone who is asleep. The initial deployment is profoundly feminine due to its intense florality. The blend of lily of the valley, jasmine and gardenia produces a burst of sumptuous flowers and ‘evening gown’ in a crimson red hue, which only fits in more luxurious salons ‘from the second piano of the Palazzo Fendi’, the most exclusive of all the ‘floors’ of the Palazzo. I am certain that the intense carnal and sensual floral bouquet is enhanced by the acidity of bergamot and the spicy kick of pink pepper. Both notes produce a synergy of penetrability and pungency in the floral accord that, in my case, almost caused a neoromantic fainting fit by Margaritosogautier due to the power and intensity. There is a sweetness that predominates in the evolution of FURIOSA and which does not come solely from the three potent flowers, but from the base of amber and guaiacol, which produces a dense memory of sandalwood and vanilla. Curiously, I do not detect the presence of the announced incense. But, when I speak of SWEETNESS, I do not refer to a typical fruity choulie from secondary school or a sweet shop, but to a Sensual, Carnal and Voluptuous Oriental Sweetness. A Sweetness-As-God-Commands. Because I like sweet perfumes, but sweet ones like in Furiosa, in Noir Divin by Stendhal or in Raghba by Lattafa. FURIOSA DI FENDI is a drastic, powerful, feminine, floral fragrance with good performance. It is not advisable to use it for work (unless you work in fashion or perfume sales), nor for the day or in hot temperatures. If you use it for a romantic event, your partner might faint, for many diverse reasons, both stemming from your personal amorous worth and the glorious expansiveness of the perfume itself.

Does anyone explain what Shalimar and Insolence have in common… both by Guerlain??

  • I thought this would be a beastly amber floral, but it turns out to be a rather ordinary scent: it doesn’t project much and lasts around four hours. The star note is lily of the valley blended with gardenia, sweetened with a touch of amber. It’s distinct from the classic Li; I’d give it a 9 for originality since lily of the valley isn’t common in perfumes. Longevity 4/10, Bottle 9/10, Projection 5/10, Originality 9/10. Although the style breaks genre conventions, the scent is feminine, pleasant for everyday wear, without being intrusive or overwhelming.
