Descripción

Percival by Parfums de Marly is an aromatic citrus fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2018, the nose behind this composition is Hamid Merati-Kashani. The top notes reveal a vibrant freshness with lavender, mandarin, bergamot, geranium and pink pepper; the heart unfolds floral and spicy elegance thanks to Hedione, violet, jasmine, coriander, cinnamon and cardamom; while the base notes leave a warm and woody trail with ambroxan, Amberwood, musk, balsam fir, Clearwood and tonka bean.

  • I had a complicated start with this fragrance. I imagined something brighter, more potent, and with better projection. It wasn’t like that, but upon wearing it and comparing it to similar designer scents, it’s very good, elegant, and discreet. It’s not a projection bomb, but it has great performance and the scent is pleasant. In the opening, lavender, citrus notes, jasmine, and musk stand out. If you have the chance, give it two or three tries and compare it; that’s when the appreciation begins. Scent 8/10, Longevity 8/10, Projection 6/10.

PERCIVAL is one of the safest fragrances to make the crossover into the niche world. A soft scent in every sense: aromatic, woody, and citrusy, with white floral touches. It gives a powdery, fresh, and sweet vibe, excellent for the office, business men, and meetings. And YES, it’s a compliment magnet and suitable for everyday use all year round.

FDD Percival: My favourite of the PDMs I know. I know it’s not new or revolutionary, but it blew my mind from the first contact; I knew I had to own it. It enters my top 5. Citrus, aromatic, floral, quite masculine to my taste, and extremely versatile: day, night, casual, formal, dates, etc.

  • I expected more from this house. I understand they make proposals to convince the masses, but they shouldn’t resort to imitating much cheaper perfumes. In my opinion, it’s an imitation of Montblanc Legend; they look very similar. There is more depth in the dry-down, but little else. The trail is scarce, projection is poor, and longevity is weak for the price; it fades to skin-level after an hour. For me, this isn’t niche; it could be any designer, even not the expensive ones.

  • I don’t want to ramble as the scent is already described, but after trying a decant, the only thing is that, while I like it a lot, it isn’t worth the price. It recalls other designer scents (Fierce, Platinum Egoist, Montblanc Legend…) with more quality and performance, but ultimately it’s a generic aroma. At this price, logic dictates seeking originality. The positives are its great performance, ease of wearing, and versatility. At this price, I recommend trying it or buying a decant, not buying blindly.

In my quest for a third PDM, I ventured into decants to avoid defeat. Among them was Percival. It’s the ‘barbershop’ take on PDM, and wow, there is quality. I even feel it performs better than Platinum Egoist, which I enjoy. It follows a greener, woodier path with smoky accords in the opening, and isn’t as heavy on lavender as I thought. This makes it more versatile, usable in any weather and occasion, but since I already have Platinum Egoist, I won’t venture further with this decant. For now, Sedley still wins for my next PDM.

  • Percival fits anywhere, whether office or formal event, day or night; it’s a true all-rounder. Very complimentary. It was my first niche fragrance and a sure success; with around 20 perfumes, along with Angels Share, these are my workhorses.

  • I thought it would be fresh, simple, aromatic, and citrusy like Sauvage EDT, but it’s super amber with spices. It leans more towards Sauvage Elixir but refined and better balanced. I love it; it doesn’t feel sporty as I read, more suitable for everyday wear, the office, or a stroll. Performance is average. If I run out, I’d buy it again.

  • Truly surprised by Percival; it’s a tremendous and super-versatile fragrance for any season. I’ve received many compliments; the quality is sublime. Some compare it to Montblanc Legend, and if it is similar, the quality is distinctly different. Depending on your budget, it’s worth every penny—a marvel of perfumery.

  • Abercrombie Fierce but with next-level ingredients, offering better longevity and projection. Having it all is redundant, but if your wallet allows, go for this over Fierce.

  • Percival is a Montblanc Legend with more longevity and better projection. Nothing more. Parfums de Marly is a niche house that sells niche-priced perfumes that smell like designer fragrances. As I said, it has better longevity than designer ones, but they feel almost the same. Is it worth paying those prices? For me it is a resounding no; I prefer to spend that money on other niches with more original scents.

  • In my humble opinion, comparing PdM Percival with Fierce or Legend for having the same DNA is like comparing a Porsche Boxter S with a Nissan Micra CC for being both sports cars and convertibles. Percival is simple but exquisite, it stands out for having class, although it is not for formal occasions. I note the exit of the geranium and violet, and in the dry down comes the magic of the musk. The longevity on my skin is above average. It is a perfume that generates compliments, usable all year but preferably during the day. Completely versatile in seasons. One of my favourites from PdM.

  • peperinafragancia

For me it is a scent between Montblanc Legend and Burberry for Men. In fact, as the hours pass, it seems more similar to the latter. It is a Legend a bit more fruity and sweet, with slight touches of bergamot, orange and musk that make it more pleasant and less serious. It also has an air of classic CK Eternity, that fresh and herbal men’s cologne. Like other fragrances from the house, it has a richness of notes that turn over naturally and unitarily, maintaining a balance between clean notes like lavender and sweet fruity notes.

  • What I am about to say may sound like blasphemy, but it reminds me a lot of Dior Sauvage. I do not say this as a negative criticism, on the contrary, I like Sauvage and I see this Percival as its niche and refined version. It smells very natural, nothing synthetic and with a lot of quality, typical of this house. It does not carry the sweetness of the famous Layton or Herod, but instead delves into fougère aromatic grounds. I do not know if I would buy it, I find it too generic to spend that amount, but there is no doubt that it is a very beautiful perfume, well made, kind, versatile and liked wherever you go.

  • I am not an expert, but I have slowly fallen in love with this art of smelling rich. After seeing many reviews, I decided to try it blind and it was a success. I understand that it is a bit like Legend Spirit, but there is a huge difference: it feels completely natural and invites people to come closer to smell. For me, 10 out of 10, without a doubt a blind buy that will be liked.

  • I bought Percival blind as my first niche fragrance and, although I read good comments about the longevity, I was surprised by the box: complete royal blue, no stripes or anything, looking like a cardboard paste and I thought it was fake. But when I bought it from someone I trusted and checked Parfums de Marly, I saw that the packaging had changed and I got a May 2023 batch at 82% (previously it was 78%). I cannot compare scent or longevity with the old version, but this 82% one does not seem to last me much. Perfumes last me too long, so while the scent is elegant and casual, the longevity leaves much to be desired. It feels like quality, it is versatile, like ADG Profumo, suitable for any situation, from formal to the gym (although it is expensive for the gym). Perhaps I need to macerate it more, but I think the performance drops due to the reformulation.

  • Conde Di Amante

Stop talking about percentages, this is pure ambrosia. A perfect signature fragrance for southerners who ask for something difficult: a fresh perfume with enough potency not to use it only in summer and that projects. That is Percival. It lasts 8 hours on my skin, even with a 2023 batch. My decant from 2020 would not last so long. As Carcañuelo said: ‘if you want longevity try putting on 98 octane petrol’. It is fresh, with many natural components and should last all day. 3 sprays at 8:00 and I still feel it, although very close to the skin.

  • Monty Phyton

Don Algodón but expensive: bergamot, lavender, jasmine and musk. The dry down is what gives it its seal of distinction, but… who is going to come to smell your wrist or neck after smelling Don Algodón? In intimacy you are already conquered, but to attract someone you need more of a hook at the start. 🕯️ 7/10.🔥

  • Darwin Ruiz Ruiz

What a total disappointment. In terms of performance, it projects nothing and lasts with luck for five hours. Furthermore, regarding the notes, there is nothing new or striking; even the term ‘indescriptible’ falls short, as I cannot identify or differentiate any specific note.

  • byrgertidesson

The new formula is an absolute triumph on my skin: it projects massively more than the previous version and keeps me clean and fresh all day, which is vital in my city’s heat and humidity. The scent is a Fierce version with a huge leap in quality, although the ambroxan base takes away a little charm, feeling like a forced addition to make it more extroverted and removing that element of surprise.

  • A very criticised fragrance for its similarity to other perfumes but which nevertheless does its job very well of keeping you fresh for several hours, it has a surprising performance for being a fresh perfume and equally good projection, it has been the fresh perfume I resort to most of the other 10 I have. Scent 9/10 (nothing surprising or new but you can smell the quality). Duration 8/10. Projection 8/10. A very good perfume if you want a fresh perfume with good duration, versatile and easy to like.

  • I understand that, at first, many might think it is a generic scent or offers too little for the cost, I myself fell into that hasty conclusion. However, I recommend wearing it and trying it in depth in different situations and environments, as it is a fragrance where the first impression or the smell in a dry-down does not do it justice. And yes, it is obvious that Percival is inspired by the DNA of Fierce or Legend, something Parfums de Marly has done with many of their best sellers, taking a successful idea and giving it that extra refinement that, at least in the past, the French house had. Now, to say it is the same as them in my opinion is not to know Percival in detail, as the quality and depth that one and the other have differ in a way that touches the lunar. The duration, at least in the old versions (those that listed 78% alcohol), exceeds with room the average in this type of olfactory pyramids. They have asked me about it more than 9 hours after putting it on, sometimes it may seem it is not there, I suppose due to the ambroxan, but one must not underestimate it in this aspect. It is very versatile and usually generates compliments, so it would be a perfect signature fragrance for someone who wants something that combines distinction and ease of use. The price is obviously high, but we are talking about luxury goods, and in that regard, Percival does not seem out of place within the Parfums de Marly catalogue (for me it is a top 3 of the house) nor when comparing it with other perfumes in that price range.

  • A very normal and generic scent perfume. If I smell it with my eyes closed and someone tells me it is a supermarket cologne, I believe them. It is not that it smells bad, but it is the typical blue perfume smell. I let my wife smell it without knowing what perfume it was and she said the same, that it was something common.

  • OdiseoBcn

A fragrance that shares DNA with Fierce, Eternity, and other classic perfumes. On my skin, it has an almost unpleasant dry-down, pasty, which in no way offers me a sense of quality or exclusivity. Duration and projection are enormous, but it is nothing memorable nor does it have a unique personality. Try before buying, and certainly its price is exaggerated for what it offers.

  • David_1209

This smells to me like the Ray-Ban McQueen perfumes from Avon, total disappointment.

  • Do not let yourself be carried away by reviews from people who have not had it or tried it properly… (I see many of them here). To start with, having Fierce from Abercrombie and comparing them side by side, they are not the same and in my opinion they do not even resemble each other. They may share notes that remind you of them if smelled independently, but side by side… nothing to do with each other, the difference is very clear. It is not a generic scent as they mention… if I go to any department store, I do not find a scent equal or similar. And I certainly frequent them to discover new launches or buy something from Dior or Chanel. It is more the issue of wanting to appear interesting, knowledgeable, and someone very refined and unique, throwing hate at a house like PDM or some perfume of this… if they actually had it, they would be giving another “review”. Percival is a fresh, jovial, versatile, and very pleasant perfume. It is guaranteed to please the vast majority of people who smell it; you are safe… it is the exact opposite of some challenging, heavy, rare perfume. However, it has excellent performance, projects excellently in the first hours, and there are bursts as the life remains. On my skin, it lasts approximately 8-9 hours, and on clothes, the scent remains until washed. The fact that it is a fresh perfume should not confuse you, as it has very good power and one must measure the sprays. Without a doubt, it is a perfume that will go better in casual situations, summer, spring, perhaps in autumn depending on where you live. Although being so versatile, you could use it all year for any occasion and you are fine. Quality guaranteed by the PDM house, it is worth trying.

  • Anyone claiming it is the same as Abercrombie has a very mistaken appreciation. Percival has superior quality; the scent is sufficiently distinct to say they are not the same. I understand that the fougère-citrus-aromatic construction might bring to mind the Fierce cologne, but to say they are very similar or that owning both is redundant… well, they must have some olfactory alteration. I would stay with Percival a thousand times over Fierce, regardless of the cost.

  • Pabloquinte

I saw it with a very well-supported review by the marketers and bought it almost blindly. It is Montblanc Legend without seeking details. It serves for daily wear, the office, and informal moments. A fragrance for every occasion, nothing new. I would not buy it again. Its performance is good, creating a bubble throughout the day. 15/04/2025: I still do not understand how they promote this perfume so much as one of their favourites, if not the most. This definitely does not recommend it; it is a normal thing you find in a Montblanc Legend bottle between $40 and $60. Additionally, its performance is abysmal; I do not feel it for more than 2 or 3 hours. Note, this costs $320. It is not justified, I do not recommend it, probably the worst perfume I have ever had.

  • Anyone comparing this to Montblanc Legend simply doesn’t understand what they are talking about. It is impressive, crafted to please, and of premium quality. It is worth every penny.

  • Javi De Palma

According to Fragrantica it is unisex, although personally I can’t imagine a woman wearing it. Anyway, to each their own. It is said there are cheaper perfumes that resemble it, but after testing Absolutely Dark by Zara and Fierce by Abercrombie, I can say that although they share a profile, neither the evolution nor the longevity has anything to compare with. Percival is, without a doubt, the freshest fragrance with the most longevity on my skin of all tested. No imitation comes close in elegance, sophistication, quality, or performance. I have five from Parfums de Marly and without a doubt Percival is my favourite. I think it is a very underrated fragrance. For me, it is the best fresh perfume both for olfactory quality and performance. Even in very warm climates, it behaves like a real beast. I believe those who criticise have never had a full bottle; with 1 ml it’s impossible to evaluate the performance. I adore this fragrance and recommend it with enthusiasm.

  • EricDraven

Total disappointment for this little thing costing nearly 300 lereles. Generic aroma, made to please without more, the deodorant or perfume a schoolboy would wear daily, competing with Borealia (please, I’m not comparing them). Niche price for something little or nothing propositional, unjustified, and with very normal, tending to poor, performance. And they say Layton is generic… Well, this wouldn’t stand out in a supermarket bottle.

  • This is the ‘final boss’ of daily wear perfumes, perhaps very expensive for being so ‘simple’, but it simply works. Blind buy? Yes, although it can disappoint. It’s nothing extraordinary, and you might find something cheaper on the market. That said, don’t expect the quality this has.

  • Antonio Tapia

Those who say it’s a generic scent don’t know this fragrance well; give it time and you will realise the great quality of its ingredients.

  • A simple, all-purpose fragrance. It smells good, reminding me of L’Immensite by LV in its dry down. It’s very expensive for being so generic, although it is also true that its result is not that of a standard designer fragrance. It fixes, lasts, and projects well.

  • It is the perfume I wear in spring/summer at home in the evening. It is simple but sophisticated, soft and clean. It predisposes me to have a relaxed rest.

  • Despite the quality of the ingredients, I don’t see a reason to justify buying a fragrance so generic and unpalatable as hospital food. It’s absurd for a niche brand to have such mediocre proposals. It will make you smell clean, neat, and well, yes. But for that price, you get better performance and similar proposals, such as Montblanc Legend EDT.

  • Currently, it is my signature fragrance. I wear it at any time and in any season. The context ranges from formal to casual. Although the scent is easy to understand and many see it as generic, it is incomparable to the blues thanks to its sophistication and freshness, something I value greatly because it gives a sense of absolute cleanliness. The quality of the ingredients is notable. The projection lasts 1 or 2 hours before becoming intimate, and the longevity on skin is 7 to 8 hours. For me, it is the best of PDM. In principle simple, in practice brutally effective.

  • I’ve seen many negative comments, and the truth is, in my case, I would always buy it for everyday wear. It’s neat, elegant, and will get you compliments. It’s an easy-to-please scent, and that’s the idea; it doesn’t have to be complicated just because it’s niche. It smells very different from usual daily scents; you need to wear it a few times to notice its evolution. Excellent for any occasion and worth 100% if you want a distinctive daily aroma. (Note: I live in a warm climate, between 30 and 35 degrees).

  • To be clear: this fragrance is very much a 50/50. I tested it on real skin several times, not a quick sniff. Is it bad? No. Does it behave well? Yes. But for me, it’s not special. It smells clean and correct, very easy to wear, yet also too familiar. I can’t find a twist or a personality to justify the price of a full bottle. It smells good, but it smells like something I’ve heard a thousand times from the modern man. I understand those who defend it: it’s versatile and unobtrusive. But that’s exactly where the problem lies; it doesn’t generate emotion or identity for me. Sometimes it feels like if you don’t like it, you just “didn’t get it.” In my case, I didn’t connect. Thank goodness I tested it as a decant; that was enough to form an opinion without spending more. A good fragrance, but not memorable. I wouldn’t buy it full size.
