I believe everyone knows the story: Jean Kerléo, the genius behind masterpieces, set out to compete with the era’s best-seller, Cool Water. Everyone wanted that aquatic note. Kerléo’s challenge was to maintain Patou’s luxury in a perfume centred on ‘calone’, that trendy commercial note. He used it, of course, but embedded it in a mossy, woody base that is his signature. Although the bottle is beautiful and smells lovely, with that oakmoss, the fragrance fell apart, and today the few remaining units are unsold. Critics complain that Voyageur doesn’t reach the heights of jewels like Patou PH, and they’re right; it can be indifferent, yet it deserves a second chance without comparing it to his other works. What does it smell like? It begins with a potent citrus juice that evaporates quickly, blending with lavender, sage, and that noticeable oakmoss from the very first second. It touches on sandalwood, cedar, and that aquatic note that would be discarded today, but Kerléo held it back within that strong aromatic base. It’s a warm aquatic, without that metallic sting that can be irritating, and carries that unique hallmark that only a house like Patou could demand. The box comes with a pull-out insert depicting a journey where the floral and woody elements unite with natural essences; everything smells natural, yet that aquatic note remains, reminding us this is from another time that never returns. Kerléo didn’t know then that Voyageur was a one-way journey, with its destination being the port called IFRA. Full stop.
