  It is a 220-year-old scent, created when Mary Shelley and Jane Austen were alive, at the height of the Empire fashion era. Those uncomfortable corseted dresses were abandoned for light muslin gowns, and this cologne represents that: it is fresh. The lavender stands out well against other flowers and herbs, creating a green floral fragrance that is relaxing and refreshing. I can picture Austen’s heroines with an embroidered muslin handkerchief soaked in this to calm their nerves. I love it, especially at night as a relaxant after a stressful day, wearing cotton pyjamas while reading Austen or watching a series. It is proof that a classic survives the fashions.

  I’ve found the closest thing to the legendary Atkinsons Lavender available today with Yardley English Lavender. It feels like a reborn reincarnation of that classic, featuring a brutal note of wet oakmoss. It’s 100% unisex; I even use it on my pillow to dream awake and wake up laughing. I recommend it because the original Atkinsons will never return, and alternatives must be sought; I’ve tried everything from Lomani Pour Homme to Ferrari Lavender, but none have reached its height, so exploring options is the best route.
