Lancaster Concentrée is a fragrance that lives in its own time, though today it is somewhat set aside due to its peculiarity. It has a green, aromatic, and woody opening, a tender amalgam of dark green that is nothing like harsh. At first, it might seem daunting, but the alcohol recedes quickly to reveal a spring forest after the rain, where pine resin drips clean and wet. Its amber is not dirty and blends well with a nice chypre character, featuring coriander and basil that are sweetened but without modern cloyingness. It lasts a long time on the skin and has many facets; in the late afternoon, depending on the day, it can be very masculine and not project much, but if you apply it generously given the price, it offers interesting sillage. It is a dense pine forest on a fresh afternoon, with the last rays of sun, inviting you to walk home. It is a quiet forest that says goodbye so you can sleep in the tenderness of the night. If you like a soft, clean chypre with woody tones and drops of sweet pine amber, give it a try. EDITED: The next day it remains on the skin; little trail but impeccable longevity.
The story of Lancaster springs from the friendship between two prisoners in a concentration camp: chemist Eugène Frezzati and businessman George Wurtz, pilot of a Lancaster bomber. They founded the brand in Monaco in 1946, launching their first perfume in 1977, followed by this Eau Concentrée, a floral chypre for unisex wear. It is easy to wear, soft, and discreet. The opening is herbal and green, featuring lavender, bergamot, coriander, thyme, and basil. It evokes a fresh, juicy Provençal countryside accord. It then drifts into a gentle florality with a 1920s aesthetic. As it dries down, the resinous chypre emerges with labdanum, sandalwood, and moss, backed by an indolic base that adds complexity. It recalls Guerlain with its vanilla and lily-of-the-valley notes. The trail is moderate, but on my skin it creates bursts in the heat. It lasts a long time, leaving a soapy, sweet patina. It is a perfume with great class.
Lancaster is a gem for its quality-to-price ratio and because it’s non-linear. It unfolds in three phases: a fresh, vital opening reminiscent of a Mediterranean forest; a middle with smoky, woody notes that instil confidence; and a surprising, amber, sensual, and softly animalic dry-down that draws compliments. With reformulations and the loss of synthetic algalia, it has lost some of that sexy edge, but it remains a great chypre at a fair price.
