Before Magie Noire arrived Lancôme already had a rich history. In the 1950s they launched Magie and although the scent differs Magie is like the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio: elegant pure and radiant. Magie Noire (1978) is something else entirely: an exotic mysterious and carnal woman. When applied to the skin Magie (1950) delivers a symphony of jasmines that kisses you sweetly. The quality is sublime; although I am reviewing the extrait the other concentrations are also top-tier. A refined jasmine reigns supreme accompanied by soft rose and spices that lend voluptuousness without being ethereal. Sandalwood and ambergris ensure lasting power. As it dries down iris and violet become more prominent. It is high definition: the aromas shift through constant nuances like a 4K screen. That power of the extrait which was once out of reach for many due to its price though today some EDPs and EDTs also make an impact. It begins floral and ends spicy musky and woody without losing the floral halo which becomes powdery. It contains aldehydes and bergamot linking it to N5 but the orange blossom in the latter sets it apart. Sweet delicate yet impactful just like that Blue Fairy who enchants and teaches us. Magie Noire returns to florals with the same quality but leans into the dark: galbanum sandalwood and suggestive spices perfectly in tune with its era. Armand Petitjean former head at Coty (whom many consider the finest modern perfumer) created Lancôme in 1935. Already mature he brought experience and prestige launching fragrances and beauty products. In the 1960s L’Oréal acquired him. Names bottles scents and history may change but the merit lies in doing so with quality respecting the past and embracing the future without resorting to selling out.
