Have you worn Massimo Dutti In Black?

Tell us how it opens, how it settles on your skin, how long it lasts and when you wear it.

  1. It’s a shame they threw the classic 1988 and Sport versions in the bin. What a pity you can’t find them anymore.

To be honest, it didn’t really impress me. I picked it up cheap to use at home or after a shower, but after using up almost the whole 200ml bottle, I’ve said nothing. It’s fresh and has some spice, but it lacks character and masculinity. One of the few I wouldn’t buy again.

I keep a bottle of In Black next to my computer so I can try it again every day. At first, I found it dull, just another cologne. But over time, I’ve started to love it. It reveals new nuances and beauty I didn’t see before. I think the brand doesn’t have the reputation it deserves; it offers little intensity but great quality. In Black has Lalique notes. By the way, I think it’s named wrongly; ‘Black’ doesn’t fit as it’s not woody or dark at all. Its true name should be ‘A Sunset in a Japanese Garden’. It evokes bushes at dusk, with a breeze and scents of cardamom, rosemary, green tea, and soft herbs. It’s not wild, but a warm infusion, more Japanese than Mediterranean. There’s a touch of Cacharel from the nutmeg and coriander. Olfactorily, it’s an aromatic chypre with spices. Over time, I notice better performance, though it’s still low; you can boost it with more application since it’s cheap. Having the full bottle and testing it extensively has changed my opinion drastically. Often I judge perfumes by small samples, but what would I have said if I’d had the full bottle? Perhaps something very different.

I tried this this morning. At first, cardamom, vanilla and nutmeg came through, and I was delighted to have nailed the notes. I adore the opening: it’s a creamy, sexy and refreshing masculine blend, like bastard daughters of Le Male or 212 Sexy Men. I love the cardamom, which is quite prominent here, with a powdery, floral and spicy touch; it always reminds me of the pet shop, with its sacks of oats and bran—a dirty yet clean scent, as if you’d slept on it. I also like the nutmeg, with that gummy texture that wants to be spicy but is sweet and piquant. These two ingredients bring the temperature down from the vanilla; they’re dry and full of nuance. I admit I love this synthetic opening from In Black, which is perfectly fine. But after five minutes, it stops being funny to know there’s bergamot and violet leaf, my enemies. Thank goodness the violet doesn’t smell of tar but of sugar, and the bergamot isn’t intense. This is when the perfume stops pleasing me until it dries down and becomes enjoyable again, though less so than at the start. In Black is a party oriental, woody/spicy with an amber tinge. All in all, between pipes and flutes: it’s a cheap perfume that smells cheap, but I like it and would happily wear it if it lasted more than an hour and a half.
