It opens citrusy and spicy; you can definitely detect the rosemary and tarragon, making it quite original for what I’ve smelled. Once it settles, there’s a faint hint of incense, which is a pity as it’s so subtle. It’s a cologne (not a perfume) that I quite like, despite having some sour tones for moments that remind me vaguely more of gastric reflux than citrus. The longevity is very poor.
Alberto Morillas is a genius at creating clean, energetic aromatic colognes that are never overwhelming and always easy to wear. This collaboration with Zara brings three fragrances evoking three corners of Spain: a morning in Seville, a sunset in Barcelona, and a night in Madrid. I managed to get all three at a ridiculous price when they were on sale. Reading the notes for ‘Morning Sunray in Seville’ and the bottle description, one expects something more surprising, though the result is equally satisfying. It’s important to clarify that this is NOT a perfume, but a very enjoyable cologne. At first, there’s the bitterness of lemon and bergamot, then rosemary and tarragon take over with a strangely invigorating darkness. Later, subtle hints of cypress and geranium maintain this somber air. As it dries down, it becomes more luminous, settling into a pleasant musky scent with an almost imperceptible touch of incense. I see a certain formality in this fragrance, leaving behind that carefree, sparkling vibe typical of summer scents. In my imagination, it evokes what the fortunate would have smelled like enjoying a day off in the early 20th century, grooming themselves with those primitive colognes to enjoy leisure. One of them could be Federico García Lorca spending a summer afternoon in the garden of his holiday home, La Huerta de San Vicente, writing in the shade of a lush jasmine.
To me, it smells like a classic barbershop; it has that powerhouse vibe and lasts quite well once it’s mellowed out.
