Forget what they say about 2019; this chap launched in 1980 and the current version is a disgrace. If you grab the vintage edition, you’ll be blown away: as a cologne, it lasts for hours and smells glorious. The new version evaporates in two hours, so if you want to truly enjoy it, look for the old bottle.

I’ve just picked up the vintage edition and, heavens!, it smells of pure darkness. To me, it’s basically incense in perfume format. The opening is warm and unusual, with patchouli, but it doesn’t quite convince me at first. The dry-down is another story: it transforms into a dark, smoky, tranquil masculine beast, like ancient incense mixed with chocolate and soft vanilla. It smells of another era, it’s rich and utterly chemical-free. Perhaps I catch a hint of myrrh at the end; it reminds me a little of Fahrenheit EDT due to the benzoin. It’s not for everyone, but rather for people without inhibitions aged 35 and up, ideal for dates or standing out.
