If you like leather with animal touches, this Thailand Oud in Cairo won’t disappoint. It’s a rough leather accompanied by two types of oud, one of which is Cambodian, which makes you wonder where they fit it in. But it’s nothing intimidating or offensive; the oud is quite animal, but it doesn’t smell like a stable. It’s like a rough version of Tuscan Leather, but it has an addictive point due to that animal side. It’s not sexy; it’s openly sexual and you won’t get many compliments, but people will ask for your number plate when they smell you. It lasts over 8 hours on skin and, fortunately, the projection is moderate, so you enjoy it without overwhelming anyone. It’s very masculine and for fresh weather. Different, challenging, and with a very fair price.
I’m torn. It doesn’t quite take my fancy, and yet I’m a fan of oud in its most radical versions. The name hooked me from the start; it sounds very evocative. As I already owned several versions of Ministry of Oud by Paris Corner, I thought this Thailand Oud in Cairo would be equally good (like Oud Indonesian, Strictly Oud, or Oud Satin). But I didn’t like it at all; it doesn’t smell good, isn’t balanced, and isn’t interesting. It smells too spicy, perhaps smoky, and I don’t detect the oud or the two types it claims to carry. Mostly, I smell lots of cinnamon, which I can’t identify well; it might be incense or leather, and a smoky note that repels me. Although it sounds odd, sometimes it smells like Burgos blood sausage. I don’t recommend buying it blind; you won’t get compliments. It’s for your personal enjoyment and the horror of others.
It’s quite similar to Luxor, but it lacks that animal (faecal) opening. It’s a flat fragrance with little evolution and not the performance of the original, but for the price, it’s a good option.
These days, the formula isn’t new, as other brands have tried it before. The opening is intense: the acidity of the leather and the animal side of the oud mix to create a strong scent reminiscent of wet dog and vomit. What stands out most is the stable-like smell, horse sweat, mixed with something boozy, plum brandy, hunting, and faisandage. When it dries, it becomes woody, like fresh varnish or polished parquet, with hints of licorice. In short, it’s scary at first and not for a date, but when dry, it smells good. More than TF Tuscan Leather, it reminds me a lot of TF Oud Wood Intense, though without that pheasant note.
