It’s a memory from my childhood, which makes it hard for me to be objective about Topaze. My mother had this fragrance in an old telephone bottle, and my two sisters and I would often go to her dressing room to smell it, ‘unplugging’ the plastic cap and letting ourselves be carried away by that exuberant scent. To me, it was very mysterious, somewhat dark, although now I see it as almost solar, luminous, very vital and romantic. What joy to be able to buy it again, in a special edition in the early 90s. It’s sensual, very aldehydic, sweet and fruity, very dense, almost sticky. For me, the notes that stand out most in such a harmonious and masterful blend are the aldehydes, the peach (well-ripe), sandalwood, civet, carnation, amber, ylang-ylang and benzoin. Its longevity isn’t very good, although the vintage my mother had in the 80s and 90s was quite persistent. I still remember the comments from my school friends during break! Another perfume from the past that I’ll always miss; animal and suggestive, viscous and penetrating as only those jewels were made back then. Beautiful as the stone it’s named after.
Topaze is one of my favourite Avon fragrances. My 80s version leans towards a dark, spicy floral with balsamic notes, lots of musk, ylang-ylang and jasmine. Over the years it kept its dark personality but became less complex, losing some of the exotic side to emphasise the floral chords. Many say Topaze is like a bridge between Chanel No. 5 (1921) and Arpège (1927), trying to emulate both but with its own character, without being so heavy on aldehydes. In the trinity of balsamic florals, ambers, slightly spicy and dark fragrances, the Avon Topaze (1959) is the most floral, the Directoire by Charles of the Ritz (1945) the most balsamic, sweet, musky, and the Sortilege by Le Galion (1937) the darkest/spiciest. Although it doesn’t appear in the pyramid, Topaze has a hint of vanilla like the others. All try to express that dark, powdery, slightly exotic floral that breaks away from the typical romantic, dusty bouquet. The longevity is decent, neither weak nor intense. It’s very aromatic (don’t forget it contains benzoin, amber and tonka) and really turns heads. I think all these should be considered by fans of this type of floral.
Uniquely identifiable, it has nothing to do with other perfumes and brings back many childhood memories. It’s a storm of scents I can’t quite distinguish apart from the amber, yet they dominate due to their potency and longevity.
