This fragrance deserves a more detailed review. Is it exotic citrus? No, it’s a distinct take on yuzu. It opens with a minty citrus boosted by natural lemon and fresh basil. Within minutes, the yuzu mellows as fig takes over, like biting into a freshly picked fruit. Then pistachio and a fruity sweetness round everything off. The spices are barely noticeable, while the woods, especially sandalwood, emerge at the end. There’s no intrusion; it’s fresh, refined and subtle. Projection is moderate to low (more noticeable in heat) and lasts 6 or 7 hours on my skin: good projection for the first hour, then a gradual fade until it sits close to the skin. In short: a different take on yuzu, enjoyable, wearable and of excellent quality.
The Caron house, founded in 1902 by Ernest Daltroff, started as a haberdashery and has always specialised exclusively in perfumery, unlike Chanel or Dior. Since 1998 it has been owned by Patrick Alès, the famous hairdresser, and features master perfumer Richard Fraysse. Yuzu Man is fresh, summery and comforting. The yuzu here is not aggressive as in others; it starts intense with verbena before becoming sweet and gentle with fig, honey and soft floral notes that give a soapy, relaxing sensation. The dry-down is almost aquatic, with sandalwood, calone and musk, evoking a minimalist, meditative Japanese atmosphere. The materials are exquisite and nothing feels artificial. The downside is that the trail is extremely low and the longevity moderate; even with hyper-dosing, it always stays close to the skin. It is unisex, suitable for all ages and occasions, and even works as a baby cologne.
This fragrance is a handful of pure energy. Ideal for feeling fresh and clean, it smells like a Nenuco doll for men.
Caron is a niche house in the style of Guerlain, always focused solely on perfumes and beauty. Yuzu Man moves away from the classic 1934 formula to be fresh and lightly fruity. It opens with a green, fresh yuzu, not as sharp as in Issey, thanks to the lemon verbena and basil. Then that acidity calms down, giving way to fig notes, all set against a base of cedar and sandalwood that evokes a classic barbershop with a modern touch. The ingredients smell high-quality, but the performance is weak: it lasts about three hours with low-to-medium projection. Still, it’s perfect for summer; if we reapply, we feel fresh all day long.
