MUSK DANA (what a curious name for an heiress to nothing) had her stoves as a dressing table and bleach as her room freshener. Her stepmother Chanel and her stepsisters, Dior and Guerlain, kept her scrubbing until her hands were raw all day long. Besides, those harpies wouldn’t stop saying MUSK DANA was a vulgar men’s cologne, not the proper ladies’ fragrances they proclaimed to the four winds. But MUSK DANA felt more DANA MUSK, a cheerful, dreamy girl, like any white musk that’s worth its salt. The witches of her stepsisters told her she smelled of nothing; and partly they were right. DANA MUSK is faint, to be honest. They said she was from humble origins. “Supermarket stuff”, “Cheapo”, they called her. “You’re not worth a penny”. And the truth is, DANA MUSK was cheap. There were cheaper ones, but cheap she was. It’s true. DANA MUSK liked to reverse the order of her name (instead of MUSK DANA) because she felt quite feminine. At most, unisex. But not macho. Refined, she’d say. It’s true that when you first met her, you sensed a certain acrid, bitter aroma, pleasant but a bit rough. She wasn’t to blame for having to cook the family dinner, a pot of bergamot and galbanum. And although no one knew, she also added thyme, rosemary, and a bit of broom. “Rough”, they’d exclaim, her stepsisters Dior and Guerlain, but DANA MUSK would sulk because that first impression was just that: a first impression. Because in the blink of an eye, soft floral notes, slightly woody, would discreetly envelop her. But DANA MUSK wasn’t named so by a whim. She also smelled of white musk. Softly, soapy, discreetly. Everything about her was restrained and humble. Her aromatic presence didn’t last long. Very little. So much so that whoever knew her had forgotten her after a short while. At most, a faint evocative memory, sweet floral and woody, the kind you have to bring your nose close to the skin to detect. And meanwhile, DANA MUSK kept scrubbing until her hands were raw, playing the lottery, to escape her wretched misery. Because blue princes didn’t exist back then. Well, they don’t now either.
