I have both Memo and Alhambra on hand. At first, it smells different from Memo’s African Leather, softer with cardamom and leather, but within minutes it becomes identical. It’s a wild scent, real leather on skin, not objects. It’s elegant yet potent; it can be overwhelming. Alhambra lasts around 12 hours, while Memo reaches four days and becomes oppressive. It’s not for daily wear or young people. Out of 10, seven flee by force. It’s animalistic, with immense projection, attempting to recreate the smell of a leopard in the jungle.

Opening reminiscent of a Blem-style furniture polisher: leather, earth, patchouli and vetiver. Reminds me of a dirtier, darker version of Terre d’Hermès. Smells very elegant, though I still need to evaluate its longevity.

First impression: smell of sweat, as if the person hasn’t showered in two days. I believe it’s the blend of cardamom, vetiver and cumin. I dislike the opening and dry down. I expected it to oxidise like other Arabic fragrances, but after four months it remains unchanged. Whether it’s my skin or the perfume, I don’t recommend it.

At first it smells of sweat, as if someone hasn’t showered in two days. I think the cardamom, vetiver and cumin blend terribly. Neither the opening nor the dry-down appeal to me. I’ll give it time to oxidise, like with other Arabic fragrances that started badly but improved. I’ll update in a month. *** Update: after four months it still smells of sweat. I don’t like it at all. It seems my skin is fighting this perfume, but to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend it.

When I bought this, I was tested on African Leather in-store. There is a similarity, but it’s slight. Nevertheless, Alhambra is an exquisite perfume, very elegant and totally recommended for its price.

It feels 75% like African Leather, but watch out: here you pay around €20 for 80ml, whereas the Memo version gives you 75ml for €150. The leather note is more prominent here, perhaps due to the cumin, which is noticeable without that sweaty undertone sometimes found in that note. As for longevity, it has given the original a good run for its money, which has unfortunately suffered from reformulations: here it easily lasts eight hours, while the Memo version fades significantly by six.

I’d say it’s 75% similar to African Leather, but we’re talking over £20 for 80ml versus £150 for 75ml of Memo. Here the leather is more elevated, perhaps due to the cumin, noticeable without smelling like sweat. In longevity, it gives the original a good lesson, a victim of reformulations: eight hours easily, whereas the Memo version reaches a very weakened six hours.

A magnificent and daring fragrance. It highlights leather, oud, and spices in an animalic nuance. It is an inspiration for African Leather, better blended but not identical. It is not youthful; it has personality and is suited for formal occasions in cold weather. The quality of the oils is incredible for the price (£17). If you like leather, oud, and spices, you will adore it. It follows the Memo’s DNA but takes a different path. Lasts 10+ hours on skin, with a projection of 2-3 hours. Recommended, but test first: it is not for everyone.

The option that is more akin to African Leather. The cardamom is softer or of lesser quality than in the great Memo, which is more than just a leather note: it is cardamom with spices, very good. The projection and longevity are lower than the Memo, which is more luminous; the Alhambra is rougher and more opaque. It is a good option to get the vibe, but it is not a one-to-one copy. It smells good with decent quality. Emulating that finesse at this price would be asking too much.
