I found a vintage bottle of this perfume… It was a surprise, as it comes almost empty but retains a few drops. I applied it to test it. It is old, with plenty of leather and tobacco, and very prominent flowers; it is complex and earthy. It feels strong for current women’s wear. It has that French bohemian style… I imagine a room with women of the arts, smoking, with glasses of champagne and a piano, all in a murky atmosphere between smoke and laughter… very retro. This fragrance caused a particular scene, I believe not all perfumes do that. One must consider that it is from the 1950s.
This Lady knew what she was doing! Germaine Cellier, with extraordinary chemical knowledge, dared to enter a world dominated by men. A pioneer who influenced many noses that followed. At 35, she created Bandit for Piguet, then Vent Vert for Balmain, and in 1953, Jolie Madame was born. Almost 60 years later, at my age of 22, I was offered a genuine vintage over 40 years old. A bottle that nearly doubled my age, deserving all respect. Its grey box, brown cap with a pink bow, and hypnotic amber liquid. Upon opening, I was immersed in velvet, finely orchestrated nuances. It is an era of quality and care. It opens with sweet white flowers (orange blossom, neroli, jasmine, gardenia, rose and narcissus) surrounded by a herbaceous aura. The moss becomes prominent, suggesting there is more to discover. On the skin, it reveals a fine, elegant herbaceous floral leather, reminiscent of Bandit but more floral and less ‘wicked’. It joins earthy patchouli and castoreum notes for the just right animal touch. To my nose, it smells of violet, even if not listed in the formula; the more the moss rises, the more the leather and that dark violet become pronounced. The extrait version emphasises the dark, dirty side without losing the floral, with more woods and resins. It is an unprecedented richness, my first vintage and favourite. Either concentration is dreamlike. I do not recommend the current version. If you like these fragrances, give it a chance.
Jolie Madame tells a story within a story. Initially, green notes of artemisia and petitgrain soften with whites such as gardenia and neroli. In the heart, jasmine and narcissus provide a damp, indolic base, while violets, lily of the valley and lilacs create a velvet, powdery texture, like a ballgown from another era. The atmosphere is tinged with a cold, distant blue, visible only from afar. Ethereal and mysterious, the fragrance sails between two times. As it dries down, leather and civet emerge with tobacco and vetiver, grounding us back to earth. In the end, it feels like a wonderful tale told in a lost bar in Europe, where artists recall past glories. It is a masterpiece from 1953 by Germaine Cellier, a unique and difficult-to-decipher scent.
