Antara by Castanez Parfums

The scent was incredibly rich in a gourmand way, but the description of Vietnamese oud as unsmoked wood felt odd to me. I own attars from various houses and know it isn’t incense; in Antara, the sweet, boozy notes dominated, whereas I expected more oud and civet, with less sweetness. Perhaps it was my fault—the reviewers mentioned it was heavy on the animalic side with ambergris, and I arrived expecting them to have noticed the animal notes. Mind you, I’m demanding when it comes to niche and don’t get surprised easily. It lasts like a bastard, over 12 hours on skin, projecting for 4-5 hours with plenty of compliments; I’d say it suited about 8 out of 10 people. I got hyped about the idea, but upon arrival, I felt it lacked a bit of punch.

At first, it’s a well-constructed fragrance that screams maturity; although it moves away from Castañez’s classic DNA, it retains that Umbra Maia familiarity. The opening is formidable, super tasty and distinctive—a treat for anyone to try, even without niche experience. As it moves into the heart, the complexity ramps up, and while it’s the trickiest phase for those unaccustomed to such transitions, the sweetness of dates and chocolate feels more like deep, comforting patchouli. This sets the stage for the dry down: the vanilla touch makes it delicious again, blending perfectly with the oud, softened by powdery cashmere and accompanied by oakmoss and cedar without them dominating. I see it as ideal for fresh climates, especially autumn evenings or chilly spring days. It’s totally unisex, though with a slight masculine balance, aimed at young adults or those nearing thirty—grounded individuals who don’t seek social validation but fear being different, declaring maturity and self-knowledge. Outfitting ranges from casual to formal, always ad hoc to the perfume’s character, ensuring it’s the person wearing it, not the other way around, given its complexity doesn’t allow for a fake personality. This is what I’ve perceived so far; I’ll need to test it more to see its behaviour in my circle and how it changes with humidity, temperature, and spaces. I consider it a huge success and, so far, one of my three favourite fragrances from Castañez. A big round of applause to José Núñez and The Collector Society for this masterpiece!
