From nXn Perfumes, Chai Kulfi is an oriental spicy fragrance for men and women, launched in 2022 and created by Nixon Dias. It draws on masala chai and on kulfi, the traditional reduced-milk pudding of India.
Assam tea with ginger, star anise and black pepper forms the opening, leading to a heart of baking spices, condensed milk, almond and dried rose, over vanilla, benzoin, sandalwood, amber and oud wood.
At first the impression is of a freshly brewed cup. The Assam tea note is dry and tannic, ginger lends brightness, black pepper a gentle prickle. Star anise softens the edges with a mellow, balmy sweetness.
The middle then broadens into saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Cardamom keeps the blend airy, cinnamon and clove provide warmth, nutmeg gives roundness, and saffron contributes a subtle, almost leathery undertow.
Alongside the spices comes the milk accord. Condensed milk supplies a dense, sugared creaminess, almond a smooth nutty flavour, while dried rose, more powdery than fresh, trims the richness and adds shape.
The drydown is balsamic and cosy. Vanilla and benzoin prolong the soft sweetness, sandalwood refines the texture with its creamy woodiness, and amber with oud wood brings lasting warmth.
