Shiseido was born in 1872 as Japan's first Western-style pharmacy. The company incorporated perfumery very early on: in 1917 it began selling Hanatsubaki, created with Japanese flowers and considered by the house itself to be the first authentically Japanese perfume. The history of Shiseido unites cosmetics, research and a constant attention to design.

Zen was developed in 1964 for Shiseido's entry into the United States and maintains a direct relationship with Japanese aesthetics. Zen Essence takes up that name in a current version with a floral and musky profile, with a bottle topped with wood. Shiseido's perfumery is thus understood through its dialogue between historical references and contemporary launches.
