A cousin from Paris sent it to me as a gift in miniature version. It’s basically the same as the Roger & Gallet Jean Marie Farina. It’s one of the colognes I always use after a shower.
Colognes have existed since the pharaohs, but this is the oldest commercially marketed fragrance. In 1709 Jean Marie Farina created Cologne Water in honour of the city. Today all men’s perfumes are named after it. Used by royalty, it’s fresh and relaxing; upon applying and inhaling it, you feel peace. The trail is short because the original formula didn’t have today’s fixatives. Visiting the factory in Cologne is an incredible experience. In 1793 similar formulas emerged such as 4711 and Roger & Gallet by Farina, now owned by Revlon.
The first cologne in the world and, in my opinion, the best.
I even use it to sleep in because it’s super comforting and wakes me up. It doesn’t last long—the trail fades after an hour—but it’s an exquisite citrus cologne. It’s a family classic: my grandparents, father, uncles and godfather used it, and now I do too. You get compliments, especially from older people, because it’s not overpowering and gives a sense of cleanliness.
The ingredients aren’t the original ones; a large part is reconstructed and synthetic, so the scent isn’t the authentic 18th-century aroma and strays from the initial formula.
