I met this fragrance with Carlos Huber, who told us the story behind the composition and how it encapsulates places or eras. Grove by the Sea is inspired by an island in Croatia and his experience there: the opening is the arrival at the island, the heart is a path thick with crops, and the base is the intimate scent that invades the rooms. When I tested it on my blotter, I thought of a beach with conifers, a delicate green; it’s like a summer resting in the shade. Then juicy olives emerge, olive fruit, figs, fig leaf, sweet fennel, and rosemary; I already associated it with spring and autumn with a softer air and a sea scent. Hours later, I imagine opening windows in a cabin to let in the night dew, more intimate and sensual notes. Although it is described and the imagination usually aligns, I suggest trying it first. Once I had it in hand, I thought: I want it in my collection, as it varies by pH, hydration, diet, and season. In men, that delicious olive is noticeable from the start, more accentuated than on my skin. If you like Gris Charnel by BDK and Parisian Musk by Matière Première, you’ll like this (though Parisian Musk has less performance of the three).
It’s been a while since nothing has moved me quite like this. My grandparents arrived by boat from the Mediterranean to Central America, and I’ve always felt connected to that land: from Valencia oranges and Salonican olives to figs, dates, and Jerez wines all the way to Jaffa. Grove by the Sea is that Mediterranean for me (a touch nostalgic, I admit). Rodrigo Flores-Roux, whom I liked in Xinú but wasn’t convinced to buy, here with Carlos Huber has created something memorable: a vision of the Mediterranean through a Mesoamerican lens. I love that the opening is super fresh without being citrusy; it’s a classic resinous and terpenoid profile. You can detect black olive, olive oil, salt, thyme, and fig leaves. In the heart, there are conifers and earth: pine needles, cypress, fir balsam, and red clay. It’s the coastal landscape on a sunny day with a blue sky. A delight. I bought the bottle after finishing the decant in just a few days.
