The last Caron fragrance which I tried today has surprised me. A different perfume far from the typical synthetic watery or acidic scents. It also doesn’t follow the current Middle Eastern trend with its particular notes. Caron hasn’t betrayed its French tradition nor that of a century-old house with jewels like Third Man or Yatagan. A pleasant surprise!!!
UPDATE: This Caron fragrance has just launched and I was dying to try it. It’s very different from anything I’ve smelled; I love it although the dry-down feels strange almost metallic. The hazelnut opens powerfully with tobacco and ginger while the vetiver is very subtle and the wood in the final phase fades to skin level by the fourth hour. Sillage and longevity are WEAK (2-3 hours) barely perceptible. Come on it’s a recent launch so it can be this watery. I expected better longevity. What’s the point of an interesting fragrance if it doesn’t last? In short it smells like Nutella with tobacco and citrus.
After years without touching Caron Aimez-moi comme je suis has been a pleasant surprise. It arrived as a gift and stands out for being very well structured. The opening is brief with a slightly ethereal touch that gives way to a warm creamy dry gourmand accord. The hazelnut dominates with a buttery roundness while the ginger acts more as a dynamiser than a main note. The vetiver anchors the woody and earthy base balancing the sweetness. The citrus and tobacco from the pyramid are almost imperceptible on skin; a more defined tobacco presence would have added complexity. In the heart the intensity drops and it smells of old talc and soaps evoking the retro without being obsolete. It’s nostalgic yet modern. The dry-down maintains the sweet-woody profile with vetiver as the backbone. The base is harmonious but lacks depth due to the absence of resins or noble woods. Moderate projection that drops after the first hour with sillage close to the skin. Medium-low longevity its main limitation. In summary consistent with Caron’s tradition: balanced with personality and far from commercial formulas. Despite the contained performance it’s original and rewarding ideal for those seeking something elegant and non-intrusive.
Professional aroma suitable for those over 35. Smoky vetiver with a nutty note slightly chocolatey in a Nutella style but not gourmand. If you want to turn heads Gaultier or Rabanne have better options for twenty-somethings. ‘Love Me As I Am’ projects strong but tempered character nothing aggressive. As it dries it recalls Encre Noire à l’Extrême. Pity it doesn’t last long on the skin; perhaps it would work better in cooler temperatures. By the way the bottle in hand is a real gem of quality.
The perfume I’ve been longing to buy arrived yesterday. Caron a legend that had been dormant for years has been revitalised to the max by Jean Jacques. The bottle is gorgeous: heavier than the classic Pour un Homme with thick glass at the base refillable and featuring that vertical metallic label that gives it class. It smells brilliant—modern yet mature. The hazelnut greets you with vetiver which gradually takes centre stage (at times it reminds me of Fat Electrician by ELDO) but without stealing the show from the hazelnut which smells cosy and not too warm. There’s an almost gourmand sweetness balanced by ginger and tobacco with depth over a delicious tonka bean base. In short elegant and well-made the hazelnut-vetiver duo stands out. Performance so far is good; in Cuba it feels fresh and has good projection. My bottle is from 2020 so it had time to mature. I sprayed it twice to test longevity. Edit: correct longevity moderate projection that fades over time average performance but nothing bad.
