Yesterday I made a right mess with Zara Home and @LaDamedeNoir: first I tried the Nordic Leather body milk (incense, sandalwood and leather, a proper oriental treat), but the cream didn’t take my fancy. When I paid, without remembering what I’d already applied, I put on Tonka Wood from the perfume line; it didn’t hook me either, it was too sweet, so I left it. I got home, had a shower, and an hour later, by pure chance, I smelled my hand where I’d tested everything… and I was absolutely blown away. A heavy, intense scent, like a woody gel, that I kept sniffing myself for half an hour. The question is whether it’s the cream, the perfume, the mix, or how my gel and basic Johnson’s Baby body oil amplified everything. Anyway, no other part of my body smells like that.
Amber promised and, in the end, delivered. I think the launch date was a bit off; I remember buying a bottle I still own that smells more like 2005-6 than 2008. As a cologne, it had a brutal projection. It’s a dirty, potent fragrance. Yesterday I took it out of the cupboard, sprayed a little on my wrist, and I was dizzy for half an hour. It might be down to age, but it’s an amber with a very strong aniseed note, à la Opium pour Homme, radiating like a demon. The bottle design is lovely, almost identical to the later Marc Jacobs lines and the Chanel Exclusifs. Amber was linear, with no evolution, but it kept its promise. I recall two other versions, one of sandalwood and the other I can’t quite place.
